Thanks a lot for watching the video. This was an amazing trip and adventure through a seldom seen wilderness. Don’t forget to subscribe to my channel to catch the rest of the episodes from this series and more!
I just started watching your video. I have fished for thirty years out of a canoe. Half the time by myself. And I have done 4 solo canoe trips. My advice. Get yourself a kayak paddle that can convert to two canoe paddles. Kayak paddle is so much more efficient than J stocking every other stroke.
Excellent start. I really appreciated your comment at the end of day one as you were setting up camp that you were feeling into the trip, less jittery than before heading out. I am the same way. We did a 16 day canoe trip in 2002 in the Yukon with my son and best friend. While I was very excited about doing the trip, there is something about the anticipation anxiety that flows away once you are on the water and in the wild. I love the Yukon, but have not been back since 2002. Due to easier logistics and less available time, we have substituted taking a tandem sea kayak out in SE Alaska (with off year trips to Kodiak Island and Lake Clark). My long range canoe trips the last few years have been to warmer climes, the Buffalo River in Arkansas and the Rio Grande in Texas. You do a great job editing the massive amount of video that you must take during the trip. Great production (I enjoy that part too). Looking forward to seeing you negotiate the Hess. Best regards, Clark
Thanks a lot for that! This was a greasy trip for sure. Southeast AK is amazing. I paddled the Stikine and spent some tome camping in that northern rainforest. Then took the ferry up to Skag. Would love to go down the rio grand too
@@JimBairdAdventurer I've had it since the 70's and my canoe is from the same era. A very tough cedar strip varnish "LakeField" with oak ribs, no canvas. Its seen a few rocks thou. Trouble is I have to soak it under the lawn sprinkler for a few days to swell her up. I only use it for a couple of weeks a year now. anyhow Awesome VLOGS bud.
That is a great canoe! My buddies dad had something similar and ended up covering it in fibreglass which was a bit of a shame but made like easier when going to use it. Thanks a lot for checking out the vids!! I’m glad you like them.
@@JimBairdAdventurer With the full keel it tracks very well in windy conditions. Not so great in the river. But still a surprisingly fast and tough boat when it comes to scraping over rocks etc. Very fast.
Wow!! Watching U takes me back....I love the Yukon. I think Ur very brave!..anything I did on rivers was with alotta men around - which made me feel confident in their abilities. Thanks a lot. I only really started uploading less than a year and a half ago. I had my channel for a while but only uploaded maybe 10 or fewer short vids per year and want monetized. So, I’ve been taking it more seriously and it’s been growing. A lot of big RUclipsrs, Fowler, Wooded Beardsman, My Self Reliance I’m not sure if they had as many subs as I do 1.5 years in but I may be wrong. Anyways, we’ll see where it goes.

Nice! I want to paddle the Bonnet Plume one of these years myself. The Supernova would be great, I’ve tried one out before. It’s a little small for my size personally but fun.
Holy crap JB... you are hardcore Brother! I couldn't help but be nervous if you lost that line and the canoe just rolled on without you. (Hooped) What a epic trip your doing Man... very cool that you got to parallel the river on the flight in to kind of get a feel for the paddle. Love the Nova Craft straps you brought too! The skirt should be a great help on the trip too! Just epicness at it's finest JB... look forward to the rest of this trip! Cheers Big Guy!
Big thanks! It was a little scary flying over part of the river and seeing all those boulder-strewn rapids. The spay deck is pretty much a must for running these northern rivers with rapids when you have a loaded boat. Things will get a little more interesting on the navigation side in the days to come. Thanks a lot for checking it out!
Just finished your trip don the Hess and Stewart to Mayo. Excellent and very well put together. Fantastic video!! Gods Country!! Simply beautiful. Love your music as well as letting us hear the airplance was awesome. My sister back in the 90's when she was short work being an accountant in her own business she drove from Parrsboro, Nova Scotia to the White Horse, Yukon looking for work for a year. My sister had a friend in where she stayed. My sister did find work in driving bus and ambularnce driving. When she was younger she used to do Lobster fishing (dangerous work) when accounting business and private home care nursing was slow. That was tougher then the two jobs in White Horse for sure.
No problem! Thanks a lot for watching. It was indeed an amazing adventure and experience on the whole. I have e2 if this trips up on my channel as well and e3 will be up tomorrow if you want to catch them. Have a great day!
Great, what an adventure, at 66 years old I am envious, keep it up Jim enjoy it all as well as you awsome family. To bad tori and the baby aren't with you.
I know right! This one might be a good one for the baby to sit out though. It’s pretty advanced. Thanks for the comment! I know remains people paddle rivers in the Yukon into their 70s for sure but usually go with rivers that sent as much as a handful as the Hess.

👍 thank you! I agree, like there I was traveling to the Yukon following my dreams and there was a freakin statue waiting to to commemorate me. Gave me goosebumps.
That was pretty interesting. I bet they used it back in the 70s before there were really atvs and snowmobiles, most to transport large outfits over the portage trails for people heading into the country for long stints of living, trapping, hunting and traveling around in the Stewart waters
This is so awesome Jim.. the Discovery Channel needs to discover you. Outfitting the canoe answered a lot of questions for me. I can't wait for the rest. Great filmmaking!
It is extremely beautiful for sure. That milky watercolour is brought in by Keele ice cap’s melt waters but many of the tributaries are crystal clear and emerald clear. It’s beautiful.
I don’t think a kayak would be a bad choice for this trip if you could fit your gear in it. I don’t have much experience with them. Some groups use inflatables on this river. A kayak is going to be harder to jump in and out of to scout when you’re going through a stretch of rapids and harder to access your gear to unload and reload at portages. Canoes can be poled up river if necessary too. So, there are some advantages to the canoe, On this river, you could probably just run most things in a kayak though. It might be hard to find the right kayak to rent in the Yukon but it’ probably possible. Personally, I prefer the versatility and challenge of a canoe which has been the traditional watercraft of the interior Yukon for thousands of years....I have nothing against kayaks though.

@@JimBairdAdventurer I definitely recommend your channel to people I know! Looking forward to seeing the rest of your movie from Hess River. Let the show begin. Nice of Up North Adventures to modify the canoe for you. Nice hat ( your new Yukon hat). From what I have seen it definitely looks like wilderness. Great to see. Oh yes, paddle like Bill Mason and you won't have a problem! Looking forward to the other episodes.
You’re going to love it! I’d consider starting higher up in the Hess. No real WW higher up o don’t believe and a shallower river but the wildlife is more abundant there and for whatever reason, Grayling always seem to be bigger further up on rivers.
Just found your videos. A great escape for me. Thanks for sharing this amazing trip. Definitely subscribed. Looking forward to watching the entire series and then some
Great video! Thanks Jim. I remember you & your brother from Alone. I think it was a good Idea to walk & portage the canoe. Wrecking it would end the adventure. I would be interested to see what you packed, gear & provisions. Perhaps you can show it on subsequent videos. Thanks again.
Thanks a lot! I should do a video like that, on gear as a few people have asked me that. I know there will be a lot more of the gear items I use that show up in this series too, so you will get to see several just not a direct run down

Great video, I can't wait to see the rest. What time of year did you go June?
It was July but the Hess is always that colour. Makes it very challenging to see the rocks!
I think it’s that color because of the proximity of Keele Ice Cap, up river it’s clear. Not sure but I think that’s why.

I've actually been paddling some rivers myself in the Yukon Territory, the last time being in 2018, when me and a buddy spent 52 days in the wilderness while paddling the Hart River and hiking in the areas around the river.
Very nice! I hope to make it there one day too.
I love your videos! I always look forward to see whats next! Living life doing what you love is a dream not many people can fulfill. Thank you for sharing! Hope to see more with Tori and your son!
Thanks a lot! Really glad you like them and yes, there’s more on the horizon. I’m lucky to have found a way to make this work but it’s definitely not easy. Very rewarding though!

I’ll do my best! Thanks!

You are very welcome. Thanks for taking the time to watch
Totally awesome trip!
Hey Kevin! thanks a lot for dropping by and checking it out.
I just started to watch your trip. Amazing journey. Congrats. on awesome filming, story, dream following.
Thanks very much and enjoy!
I plan on doing this next year.
I know there will be a lot more of the gear items I use that show up in this series too, so you will get to see several just not a direct run down
thank you so much. That makes total sense.
Man I’m so envious!!!Awesome stuff!!!!
Thanks a lot for checking it out! It was a great trip for sure and I was very lucky to be able to pull it off.
Another awesome video man. Really looking forward to this series...
