The idiot also didnt read the book beforee making the movie cuz he found it "boring" and mistook the Terran federation for a fascistic, warmongering nation-state when its actually the exact opposite.
I still like the movie , most of it is not really affected by Verhoevens pathetic work-ethic or personal political biases.

He also said that this was about fascism ... and completely fails to understand what fascism really is (which the society in Starship Troopers ISNT). I grew up the exact same way but it was not HALO that mirrored this movie. It was a game called, *"Earth Defense Force."* It was just as campy, had literally over 200 bugs on screen at a time and if you were not a good enough tactician the bugs would kill all the NPCs in your squad mere seconds after each level starts. It mirrored "Starship Troopers" exactly.

In the Federation you are not born a citizen but if you want to become a citizen you must perform federal service its usually back breaking or unpleasant work for a couple years but it will always have some form of personal risk to it. The federation MUST find something for someone to do they may try to dissuade an individual but they cant turn them down.
The idea behind this is one must have some stake in society and show they are willing to suffer for the betterment of society before they have a say in how its run.
Non citizens are not mistreated either they have all rights but the right to vote or hold public office.
It is essentially a harsh but fair meritocracy based republic.

  • @jamesraykenney
    @jamesraykenney Год назад +1

In the book, basically the ONLY benefit to becoming a citizen was that you could vote, but as long as you remained in the service you could not vote, so if you went career, you would not get to vote until you retired. I do not remember if you had to be a citizen to hold office, but it would seem logical. If you notice, most people never became citizens, and most could care less. Most wealthy people were not from what I remember. The entire system was designed to prevent the wealthy from becoming politically powerful. Service did not have to be military either. The author stated that police, and firefighting were considered federal service. If you were not medically capable of that type of thing, then you could volunteer to be a guinea pig. Basically anything that proved that you were willing to put your life on the line for the good of the country. And, no, there were no restrictions on quitting, except during active combat, all you had to do was declare that you were quitting, and that was it.

i'm glad you wandered into the word "campy". i think a more common term that has a strong overlap here is "cheesy". "camp" is often used to refer to things that are unintentionally cheesy for various reasons, especially "B" movies where lack of budget or talent makes it hard to avoid. it's also often used for certain genres that might be uncomfortable for the mainstream like John Waters films or other sub/counter-culture works, which might be considered "cult classics" almost immediately based on how excited the fan base is. but even things like Star Wars have a camp or cheese to them, and certainly before it was released some people ridiculed it as a "space opera", pure fantasy, childish, etc. you seemed to enjoy this a lot, have you seen The Running Man!? it pops into my head as a similar style flavor. plus: AHNOLD

*[In The Book]*, one of the main features of the Mobile Infantry was power armor, which made a single human far more powerful, and capable of taking on Bugs. These got left out in this movie, probably because they would have cost too much, and as a result, the humans fight like idiots - throwing waves of unsupported infantry into a meat grinder. If you want to see a much cooler version of this very same world, there is a CGI TV series called "Roughnecks: The Starship Troopers Chronicles" (1999-2000), which was made by the same animators and production team as the film. The CGI was pretty good (for the time period), and the story was great, and is in nearly all ways much tuer to the original book - particularly because they actually use the power armor. This lets them do orbital drops, and operate in vacuum or hazardous atmospheres, and is very cool. Without the armor, they're NOT actually "Starship Troopers". Plus, the TV show includes the Skinnies, another alien race. Watch it, you'll like it!

In the book the guy that signed them up with no legs was plainly visible BEFORE they signed up. He was there to discourage people that were not SURE they wanted to join. Later in the day, Rico sees him walking down the sidewalk and asks him about it. He was chosen specifically because of his lack of legs to act as a 'filter'. They had almost perfect prosthetics, but he did not use them for that job.

also - in the book they mention that the only way you could be stopped from attempting to complete a term of service was if a doctor certified you were physically incapable of understanding the oath. Even if you showed up in a wheelchair and wanted to enlist, they'd find you something to do. The catch was that everyone gets only one chance, and if you quit (which you can do at any time), you can't try again.

While the movie uses some of the same events as the book, the movie uses the to make a very different point. The movie doesn't dive into the theory of the society because it is a satire of modern capitalistic war. The viewer already has a reference to wounded veterans. Verhoeven simply contrasts this with the beautiful recruits going in, which is a different goal than the book reinforcing that something given has no value and the need to make potential citizens earn the power to vote.

I would also comment on how the Mobile Infantry in the book used Mechanized Suits, (which you finally see in the third movie), as human legs do not tend toward a 'Mobile' Infantry. The book is a very quick read, although there are some sexist tendencies, as the MI are all male, while the Navy are all female, as the females are better at the complex math needed to fly the ships, while the men are better at just fighting and dying. Also, a single squad tended to cap out around a dozen soldiers, and their drop pod technology was also well thought out. I think that my favorite idea from the book, besides the Mechanized Suits, were the Talking Bombs. Imagine a bomb, dropped into a populated center, speaking in the population's language, saying, "I am a bomb, I will explode in 1 minute. I am a bomb, I will explode in 55 seconds...." It did the job of causing panic, which is far more important than killing civilians. (It was used against another 'enemy', not the bugs, in the book.

To be fair, the movie is kind of a satirization of the kind of society depicted in the book more than it is a faithful adaptation. The intent was to make the kind of propaganda film that'd be put out in such a society, down to mimicking elements of WWII German films.
It really went over a lot of people's heads. I remember at the time most of my friends were complaining about how it was nothing like the book. And missed that the main premise is a critique of this slightly democratic totalitarian society that fetishizes the military while playing the victim in a war they started themselves. Service guarantees citizenship and voting rights because service guarantees indoctrination.
And it's such a downer for the main characters, too.
And because Verhoeven's not a hack, you can miss all that and still enjoy the movie because it's still a great action flick. Just like Robocop and Total Recall, it's a good movie on the surface level and then there are depths to explore if you want.

The presentation of ST intentionally gives a very sanitized view of Federation society, with just mild matter-of-fact mentions of the differences that, when stacked together, paint a picture of a two-classed society where your opinions and human rights just don't matter as much if you haven't given a chunk of your prime years to the state. The veterans couped the democracy and made everything better for everyone - that's what's taught in the schools run by, well, veterans. In the book it's explained more that no one can be denied thier right to do federal service and earn citizenship. So they actually discourage people from joining, as Rico mentioned, because they are required to find a job for you if you join.

The book really pissed off the left when it was written. It was deemed too pro-military. The director purposely tried to make a movie that mocked the book and what the author. He tried to make a movie that portrayed the government and culture as fascistic; both evil and comically stupid. Despite his effort, the movie became a kind of cult classic. Regardless, the movie ended up having almost no connection to the source material.

Heinlein wrote a brilliant book, but this movie is so loosely based on it, it needed a different title, in my opinion. Instead of credits stating it was based upon the novel, it should have said it was loosely based upon some of the characters and situations found in the novel. Just my opinion. The movie is also brilliant and ticks all the boxes for a very re-watch able film, and I love it, just not as a faithful adaptation of a beloved favorite book. Each movie takes you further into the future by leaps and bounds. Dealing with such subjects as Caste Systems, Corporate Autocracy, Colonialism, Propaganda and Fascism along the way.
Starship Troopers has 4 sequels all pretty anemic and the last 2 animated; Robocop has a couple of sequels, a TV series and a reboot; and Total Recall has a TV series and a reboot. I'd stick with the initial entry for each franchise.

Paul Verhoven uses sex and violence to the extreme to highlight the absurdity of it in movies. It's a form of grotesque commentary on how action movies keep showing more and more violent imagery. His approach is to make it so massive it becomes a form of camp in a way. Another hallmark of his movies is advertising, news footage, and propaganda. He was born into Third Riech occupied Netherlands and grew up in the aftermath. He became fascinated how politicians and business leaders in power usurped more control and then used all forms of media to slowly change the beliefs of the entire population. And again like his other themes he puts the population in his movies into this same fascism type environment to highlight the contrast as well as show those elements that exist in our society and how close they could easily be skewed into something much worse without the characters seeing it.

The muppet who made the movie completely misunderstood the book this is based on.
He thought it was centered around a fascistic, warmongering nationstate.
    Its basically the exact opposite.
Which is WHY the guy sitting out front is a decapitaded, rough looking grouch.
He is MEANT to be to deter people from signing up.
'They dont want people in the army that dont WANT to be there.
No one should sign up for prestige or some romantecized idea about being a military man.
Its rough, harsh and unforgiciving and you need to be well aware of that before signing up.
HOWEVER, if you decide to do so, no one can stop you, under the law.
The only way you can be disqualified for service is if youre mentally incapable of understnding the oath you take when sworn in.
I still like this movie quite a bit, its entertaining and it gets a fair amout of things right (considering its crakpot creator) but the large gaps in logic and weird out of place things is almost exclusively the producers biases.
He also admittedly *didnt read the book* cuz he thought it was boring.
    Nothing could be more incorrect.

It's never really explained in any of the movies, but in the book the Federal Government is required by law to find you a job if you wish to to apply for Federal Service. Doesn't matter if your blind, deaf, and in a wheelchair, they have to find you a job that you are capable of doing. This job will not be easy, and will make you want to quit, but if you persevere through it, at the end of your job term you will be given citizenship and be allowed to hold public office and vote.
You are also by law aloowed to bow out and quit at anytime, no questions asked, but you will not be able to apply for Federal Service again.

You will realize that all the Ken and Barbie doll young people are perfect fodder for the state -- beautiful, earnest, and dumb You will begin to suspect that the asteroid which took out Buenos Aires was either allowed to happen or was a false flag by the state (and remember, this was made in 1997, long before 9/11) to consolidate power for the fascist, militaristic Federation. I cannot imagine that this movie could get made today.
