Thank God I found this video. I have the same problem and didn't know what to do. Now it's been 3 weeks that I took my begonias to shower. They look healthier and even grows new leaf :)
My begonia maculata wightii is one of those I bought in a big box store because I found it pretty. Lucky enough I collect prayer plants so thanks to your Video I direktly moved it together with my picky prayer plants. High humidity is really key ❤️
I have this plant and just love it.I live in the upper mid west....cold.I keep my in my bedroom under a grow light and sometimes will move it about 3 ft away from the south window if we have sun shining. It gets rather cold in the bedroom at night, so I have a space heater on to keep the room warm.I use rain water or melted snow about twice a week.I do not have a humidifier.
How far away do you keep it from the grow light? I moved mine away from the light bc I worried that it was turning the leaves brown. I’m going to try to up the humidity next
Just found your video searching for "begonia maculata problems" and about fell over when I heard you say "Kansas City". I just rescued one from the clearance rack today that was dying in a Lowes not too far from KC! I'm thinking he caught some really cold drafts as he was right next to the doors to the outdoor garden center and is probably suffering some humidity problems. Fingers crossed I can pull him out of his funk!
I caved and got a humidifier - I live in a very cold and dry climate. So, we will see how my begonias survive. They are so gorgeous; but they are delicate. At the very least, I finally got a humidifier after years of procrastination. If anything, I’m less dry and crinkly ;)
What a simple yet great idea! I've decided to just keep my begonia plant as a bathroom plant by putting it next to the window. Hope the humidity trick will work!
My corallina is putting on leaves that already have holes in them, and it tskes forever for the back to turn red. Crispy tips have become better since I started using filtered water.
Thank you so much for this! I bought mine from lowes and some of the leaf edges were a tad crispy when i bought, all of them were but i NEEDED this plant so i picked the healthier one out of the bunch. I have 2 humidifiers that i run at night and all my plants are near the window, but i do keep it pretty cold in the house because i have hot flashes all the time. I wasnt experiencing more death of foliage, its still beautiful thankfully, but it doesn’t seem to be growing much, and its been here a couple months now. Im going to have to try the bathroom during my husbands shower now daily 🤣 see if it will encourage more growth! He creates a wet hot box. 🤣🤦🏻♀️ My other plants are growing great. Just not that one!
what I found out about this plant is that it is dormant in the winter so all the dying leaves are expected then it will come back after the winter with new leaves.
Mine is still not doing that well. It does have new leaves but it grows way slower than last summer. I'm going to repot mine and hopefully she will be happier.
It can't stand high temperatures as well... It's a very tricky plant. It's a shame, 'cause I love it! I just bought an humidifier and I'll try to make mine look healthier.
Just brought one home from Sprawlmart today. That brought me here. They had a display of about seven in need of serious tlc. The garden ctr manager gave me one for a discount, and I hope I can revive it. Mine doesn't have that beautiful red underside unfortunately. I guess it's just a different type. Crossing my fingers and blessing this Atlanta humidity...
Thank you so much for this!! I've got a new plant and wanted to make sure I stopped any crispy edges and brown spots before they could get worse, looks like it might be time for a humidifier!
@@SunnySideUpwithNicole I love that idea! I've got a couple or tropicals tho, but I've had great success this past week leaving an essential oil diffuser near where they sit (it acts like a mini humidifier, I leave the oil out but I'm told there are plenty of essential oils that would be fine to use around plants) new growth finally opened up on the begonia and the leaves are looking shinier and healthy, edges starting to smooth out as well 🥰 (my fiddle leaf fig also adores it) thanks for all your help! I never would have realized the effect humidity would have!
Pretty plant, but I agree I don’t have time for fussy plants...what about soil with more moister retention to it and a heat mat...heat mats are pretty cheap and my calatheas love them...
I should get a heat mat. For some reasons every time I go out, I forgot about picking it up lol. I will try to use different soil next time I repot it.
Hmmmm what do you do with the crispy leaves? Do I cut them off or just leave them? My bathroom hardly gets any natural light. Not sure what to do with this now....😩
Just put it in a tray of water. Mine grows in my bedroom with other plants with LED lights. It's growing great, the only issue I'm having is the red on the back of the leaves are not as red as they use to be, but no yellow and no crisping.
Amen about keeping things simple! I refuse to use a humidifier and risk mold and mildew. I bought one at Publix and it was all crispy. Put it in Lechuza Pon and clustered it with other plants and it quickly gave me like 8 or 9 beautiful crisp free leaves. I'm using grow light I'm getting them again. I've always kept my home cool so I don't get it! Bummer☹️
I had the same issue with mine, I received a cutting and have it under a glass as a mini greenhouse until it gets bigger. The other one came in a 4 inch pot and dropped leaves so fast, within weeks it lost 5-6 leaves. I started heating water to keep humidity in my house during winter. I also used a larger cache pot with large rocks at the bottom to keep water just under the plant for humidity and I also topped the soil with orchid bark. I have added the bark to my plants to hold in moisture. It seems to help my begonia, I have new growth now and no crispy leaves. I hope this helps you. I love my begonia too and I know it’s upsetting. Good luck!
Interesting, I have a polka dot Begonia that I got on clearance last week at Lowes for $10 and all the leaves have crispy edges, I live near Louisiana where there is a ton of humidity and I cannot decide if I should put it outside here in the middle of summer in a low sun area or keep it inside and see if it will acclimate to the dryer air and direct sunlight through the window
You’re in the KC area!? Have you checked out Jungle House in Lawrence? That’s where I find most of my plants, and they’ve been getting a lot of rare and interesting plants lately!
I have not been to the Jungle House but heard a lot of good things about them. I will definitely make a trip there when they re-open. Thanks for recommendation! :D
@@SunnySideUpwithNicole Yes! They are actually still open for online orders. They do curbside pickups, shipping, and I think they might deliver to KC every now and then. www.junglehousegoods.com
I'm sorry to hear that. If they live in a green house for a while, when you took them out, you might want to give them time to acclimate. Same as bringing them outdoor. Acclimate is the key.
ow, that is great. i actually thought that it does not need to much water and i could not understand what is happening with the plant, as all the leaves were going brown :((((((((((

Thanks for this! Mine is dying. I’ve had it under a grow light and read that that may be making the leaves crispy. I’ll add humidity as well!
I have the same problem with that begonia I just move her to my bathroom Hopefully it will safe her I love her 😍
It will! And the humidity that Spring brings to us will help as well! Things will only get better

prior to sleep, put it into a huge plastic bag, it helps with the humidity. You can take it back out during day time.
This is a good idea!

Same here! Did you figure it out?
Hahah i definitely have some plants i would consider a "problem child" Thx for this content Nicole! 🤗💜🌞
I know it's kind of off topic but do anybody know of a good site to stream newly released movies online?

You keep a container with water beside the plant to increase humidity.
