I made this exact one following your directions and my two cockatiels love it so much! They like it because of how tall it is and how I made it so they can get to the very top. I used self adhesive sports wrap to give the birds grip on the PVC poles. Thank you!
Wow! That's great! I'm very happy to hear that your cockatiels enjoy it. I tried to convince my twin to let me make her the same gym, but she's kind of a minimalist, and wanted me to do this instead: ruclips.net/video/x2EDsjAfYcY/видео.html I'm going to make one for my conures soon!
I saw that Video under your account today and I actually made one today to but I attached it to my wooden desk in my room because school is starting soon and I'm usually always there doing school work. So thank you!
Awesome! Did you use my most recent video to help you make it? ruclips.net/video/x2EDsjAfYcY/видео.html My sister's the same in that she wanted her desk to be part of the PVC gym. :) Good luck with school! I hope to post a video on how I made my standing desk for all those starting school soon.
I made this for my green cheek today... wish I could send you pics. thank you for inspiring me to do this and ohhh, saving me a boat load of money too!

Xolette I love that large one. But maybe make it with wheels on it so it can be moved around easily. We have two Conure's that Love climbing around on our table top model. But I think that they want more adventure. LoL. Thank You for Your Reply.
Just wanted to say thanks for posting your tutorial! I made one this afternoon with 3/4" pvc for my nanday conure and goffin cockatoo. They are already enjoying it!
Brittany DeRosia Excellent! FYI, my birds took maybe 2 weeks to finally be comfortable with it. (You know how birds are.) :) Hope yours enjoy their gym!
loved the stop motion on this... it allowed me to really see how everything was put together. I was on Etsy looking at the pricing on some of these! goodness! some sell for 200$$$.. and you spent a little over $20 =O
The pipe surface is a little slick for the birds to grasp and climb. To remedy this, I got some double-sided tape, wrapped the tape around areas like the long poles and the food cups and toy perches then got some of that medical tape that sticks to itself, cut the tape width in half and wrapped the tape over the double-sided tape with a little of the ends of the tape overlapping the end of the pipe so I could cover those with the cap. We'll see how it holds up. I think it'll be fine for awhile. I hope my birds don't want to knaw it apart into little pieces! Another way to handle the surface is to sand it and put notches in the pipe surface.
Thank you so much for taking the time to create this great video. It will help me much when trying to construct mine. I am sure it will come out nothing like yours but my African Gray will try her best to destroy it anyway. lol
I took the general design of this and made a little idea for the stand. Now I have a small scale model of the bird perch stand made of skewers. So now I just have to wait until I have someone to help me build it. Lol. :) also mine isn't going to be as large, but I like it. :)
Xolette yeah I saw. Actually I have watched both videos at least ten times XD! Any who I hope it goes well to. I haven't completed it yet. I will make a video of it when it's finished tho! And I'll let you know so you can see it. *Ps I love your videos soooo much! Love seeing da birdies especially! You have an amazing relationship with dem.
Haha... it's pretty much what you see. A shelf that is held with 2 shelf brackets. then two pulleys connected to two eye hooks, that are held up with bolts at the very end of the shelf. The shelf should be about a foot higher for me though. Maybe I'll do a video when I move in a year and I have to reassemble it again!
Try using a mallet to get a tight fit on the PVC. Some people will use PVC glue to glue everything together, but I like the option of being able to take it apart. Good luck!

Then there's the ones who think their way is better tho they're not willing to make a video or share with you. Basically on a video like this, the dislike button signifies "I'm stupid click here" lol.
Thank you for your awesome video. What kind of bird is that, does it talk? I'm following this instructions to build one playground for my cockatiels. THANK YOU!

Ty so much! i recently became the mom of a grey and was wondering if I could just change the pipe to 1"? Would the dimension be the same or should I increase it?
Good question... the dimensions of the gym is made to fit my tray. If the pipes for the "base supports" are too small, then your tray won't fit. Because the PVC connectors might be larger, then you might need to adjust the following measurements (but keep all the other measurements the same): 4 Short Base Supports (19 cm or 7 1/2") 4 Long Base Supports (26.5 cm or 10 3/8") 2 Cross Supports (36 cm or 14 1/4") 2 Steeple Leg A (8 cm or 3 1/4") 2 Steeple Leg B: (24 cm or 9 1/2") When you do adjust, just make sure everything's the same size, or your gym will be...lopsided. However, if you are not planning on using solely PVC perches, you can still use 1/2" PVC for the entire gym-- just make sure that when you buy perches, you get ones the appropriate diameter for your African Grey. And FYI, you don't need all the perches to be a uniform diameter-- it's good to have varying diameters for your perches so your bird's feet gets some exercise (and it mimics what they'd have in the wild). You can have a few small diameter perches to a few larges ones... and then have perches that are mostly the correct size for your Grey. I found this online in case you're interested: "A variety of perch sizes and materials is essential for African Greys. In his bird cage, [my African Grey] perches on items ranging from 1/4 to 4 inch in diameter that are made of metal, wood, rope, acrylic, stainless-steel chain, coconut, high-impact plastic, bird-safe rubber and a few other materials. I was always amazed at my African grey’s ability to find the thinnest perch in the cage to stand on. You would think that a pet bird would choose a sturdier perch, wouldn’t you? My point is that African greys don’t just perch on their perches. Whether they are upside down or right side up, African greys will perch from almost anything in their cages that they can put their feet around." I found that exrcept her in case you want to read more: www.birdchannel.com/bird-magazines/bird-talk/march-2007/teaser-wild-at-home.aspx Best of luck with your parrot!
sharon beedham I'm not sure what you're talking about. You should just build it and see how it goes from there. This was just my design, and it was made on the fly-- not planned out in terms of measurements... I just had a rough sketch. You don't need to follow these exact instructions-- be inspired by it and make what fits you and your parrot.
Honestly loved the video thanks for the inspiration but I REALLY need more details for example- I have no idea what kind of food dishes those are? I've only ever had the kind that attach to the cage directly so it has like, a very short (greater than 1/2) bolt with like a washer and a nut to install it with. Anyone else possibly have a suggestion?? Cause I've already been googling and cannot seem to search for the right thing lol thanks!
Look up, "Lixit Quick Lock". Sometimes they're in the dog aisle (helpful for putting on a dog crate), but they're usually available pet stores, Walmart, etc. Hope that helps!
We have 3 cockatiel, 2 lovebirds and 5 parakeets and so we are looking for a play gym and your's is great! Someone asked about their cockatiels below and you said you would assist in setting up a play gym for cockatiels - how would you change up your play gym to accommadate the medium to smaller play gyms? Thanks.
jen ica I think the size of this play gym would work fine for cockatiels, lovebirds, and parakeets. If anything, you can use smaller diameter perches, but this would work fine. I made the "frame" of this gym according to the dimensions of the plastic tray (that catches bird poop). You can design a different frame that suits your needs. :) I'm planning on making another gym, but it'll probably be twice as wide as this one... if you do make a different play gym, just make sure the appropriate pieces are the same size or your gym will be lopsided. :) Best of luck!
You're crazy! No, I'm leaving my old one here because it wasn't so portable. This one will be easier to fold up and put in the car because of how I placed the perches. :) I can help you make one for your cockatiels if you like! Dad's cockatiels are on it all the time.
I am curious. You have two different versions of this play gym in the video. One with a single 90 degree elbow and one with two 45 degree elbows. What are the measurements for the more stable one with the 2 45 elbows at the top? Thanks.
I don't have those measurements, as that gym is now at my parent's house, but you can simply make the "steeple" pieces shorter to accommodate having two 45 degree elbows. Just eyeball it. :). Good luck!
Very impressive! Question 1: It looks like the water dish might actually be hanging out beyond the boundaries of the wire drawer at the bottom, is that correct? But even if it is within the boundary, you're going to have water splash that falls beyond the boundaries of the wire drawer? So, is the entire gym placed inside a larger container at the bottom, e.g. a plastic container? Question 2: I like the stop motion animation. Did you do this using photos? Or did you continuously film it, and then only select frames that you had stepped out of? Question 3: What software did you use to create the final stop motion animation? Thanks again for the great video!
Whenever the birds take a bath the water inevitably goes everywhere, even if I angled it dead center of the gym. When the gym is disassembled, the pieces will fit in the plastic storage container. I took pictures using a wired remote. I now have a wireless remote called the RC-6 which works better when doing this type of video. I have a video on this remote. I used Cyberlink PowerDirector for the stop motion animation as well as to edit this video. Thanks for watching and good luck!
I am definitely making one for my lovie, but I really really like all of those toys you have there, do you happen to know where you got them? A lot look like they're from Petsmart and stuff but just wondering :P
They should be available at any pet store-- sometimes they are clear green and sometimes I see them in the dog bowl area as well as the parrot area. I see them all the time. Hope that helps!
In other words, do the birds have a tough time gripping the PVC pipe? PVC pipe has as very smooth texture so I would wonder if the birds have issues walking and gripping the pipe or do they do fine? Sorry if that's confusing lol I'm trying to explain it as simple as I can
+Thomas Crohan I use the PVC only as a frame to hold perches so they have no need to walk on the PVC. Others that have used PVC as perches will wrap it in tape so it's less slippery. I don't know what kind of tape they use though.
+Xolette HI, love your playgym design. I would like to make one for my Sennie and Jenday. Regarding the PVC pipe slippery issue, I have seen other PVC play gyms which have Vet tape wrapped around the PVC perches.
It fit fine in my Scion xB. But if they're too long for your car, you can make sure you have PVC cutters with you and cut them down in the parking lot so you can fit them in your car. (Alternately, you can see if an employee will help you make the cuts.) My advice though is to make the cuts you need so you don't waste any PVC. For example, you can cut 3 of the "Long Base Supports" (26.5 cm or 10 3/8") off the ends of the three 10 ft PVC. Good luck!
wood or metal pipe and get tons of good quality thick rope and roll across the beams and all nicely, this will make it look good and give the bird soft and larger grip to stand, feel comfy and fun
***** Perhaps you got the wrong size fittings-- it's common for people to take out the fittings and place them in the wrong box. Your fittings should all say "1/2 inch" somewhere.
What size bowl is that? How many ounces is it? I'm in the process of making my bird gym. I would love to include a bowl too. I'm adopting a green cheek conure. :) this bird will be very spoiled haha
I used two different sized bowls. There's a standard size and a smaller one. Either way, the size of the bowl doesn't matter much. If you find that the gym is leaning forward from the weight, you can always shorten the PVC segment it's on (called "Toy Hanger") to make a stronger base or you can just screw it onto the actual structure. Best of luck, Jackie and hope your spoiled conure loves it!
Double the short base and long base measurements, and that will give you the length and width of the base. Be sure to watch this video if you haven't seen it yetruclips.net/video/L09W2KrpMhs/видео.html
I'm not sure. As long as your bird doesn't chew it? I'd look up if there's a difference... like if it was coated in something that was harmful for birds.
+XoletteLife I just looked it up, it turns out it's called schedule 80 pvc because it's more thicker and stronger and the coloring is just to differentiate, and it's actually just the same thing just with colors and more durable, I think it would be great for my cockatoo
+kareem Tashkandi That's what I thought... though, you might be able to find the white PVC in just another area of your store. I know sometimes they place different PVC in different aisles. Thanks for sharing that with me and watching. Hope your cockatoo likes his new gym!
I bought them in California. The structure by itself shouldn't be too expensive. I mention the prices in the captions. I recently made my sister a PVC gym that is attached to a plastic desk she has.... I'll be editing that one soon!
hi! I was thinking I could follow your tutorial on my yt channel. would you mind if i put parts of your video in mine. I will credit you and put your link in the description
Soo cooo! But no slide? What kind of play gym doesn't have a slide?? heheh... And I thought this "new play gym" was going to be for the cockatiels. haha.... You're like "This one looks way more awesome than my old one; I'm taking it!"
Screaming Leaf Parrots are neophobics (afraid of new things) so that's normal. My Meyer's parrot took awhile to get used to it and eventuallly fell in love with it. Birds love to be as high as possible and our gym had the highest perches in the room. You just have to give your cockatiel time, treats, and put toys/perches that your cockatiel loves on the gym. Don't force your cockatiel on it until she's ready. It may take a few days to a few weeks. The cockatiel will eventually learn that the gym won't kill her, especially if you allow her to associate treats with the gym. I'd let her perch on my hand, talk softly to her, and give a treat-- get as close to the gym to where your cockatiel is comfortable with and close that distance daily until she's ready to perch on it. It may even help for you to rub your face on the gym to show her how comfortable you are with it (we do that with toys sometimes for our bids). Hope that helps!
I followed your instructions to make this Playgym two years back. My parakeets and cockatiel loved it.. Thank you for such a brilliant idea
Thank you for taking the time to put this video together. The family had a blast assembling it and the measurements were perfect.

Yes they are!
I love your play gym
This is the cutest pvc gym I've seen. You did a wonderful job! And those greencheeks and meyer's... I'm melting.
Haha, thanks! :)
Awesome video and your birds are really cute! I'm definitely gonna make something similar for my budgies!
Thank you. You are amazing. My bird will be very happy!

You can design a different frame that suits your needs. :) I'm planning on making another gym, but it'll probably be twice as wide as this one... if you do make a different play gym, just make sure the appropriate pieces are the same size or your gym will be lopsided. :) Best of luck!
I've built it but it's really wobbly and I dont know why can you advise me what to do
You're crazy!
:). Good luck!
Do you think this would be big enough for a red-lored amazon?
It depends on how much space you want for your bird. You can make the gym as big as you want; you do not need to use my exact measurements.
WHERE DID YOU GET THOSE PURLE CUPS ? THX
They should be available at any pet store-- sometimes they are clear green and sometimes I see them in the dog bowl area as well as the parrot area. I see them all the time. Hope that helps!
what else can I use as I can't get any PVC crosses
sharon beedham if you want this one for a cost with toys is 75 I'm in USA including shipping in the USA. add me and I have a new one.
on the instructions there are 4 45 degree elbows and in materials it says 2 I don't understand could you help
sharon beedham Follow the materials section in the description. You only need two 45 degree elbows (this is what makes the "roof" or "triangle top").
How tall is the whole stand
Your face: what a beautiful face!
where did you find the pvc cup for water?
Hardware store in PVC fittings area.
are the pvc pipes too slippery on their nails and feet or do they fine? Would wood be a reliable substitute? Thanks for the video!
I'm not sure what you're asking me. Can you rephrase your question?
In other words, do the birds have a tough time gripping the PVC pipe? PVC pipe has as very smooth texture so I would wonder if the birds have issues walking and gripping the pipe or do they do fine? Sorry if that's confusing lol I'm trying to explain it as simple as I can
+Thomas Crohan I use the PVC only as a frame to hold perches so they have no need to walk on the PVC. Others that have used PVC as perches will wrap it in tape so it's less slippery. I don't know what kind of tape they use though.
Ahhhh ok i gotcha, thank you so much for the reply! Looks awesome btw :)
+Xolette HI, love your playgym design. I would like to make one for my Sennie and Jenday. Regarding the PVC pipe slippery issue, I have seen other PVC play gyms which have Vet tape wrapped around the PVC perches.
where can I buy the bowls from
what kind of bowls did you use and where did you get them? Im having trouble finding some.
Horse Jumper505 I think it's called "crock" something. I'm able to find these easily at PetSmart and Petco.
How do u fit the 10ft PVC pipe in ur car? I have everything but those
It fit fine in my Scion xB. Good luck!
Where did you buy your stuff its so cheap
what else can I use as I can't 2 PVC crosses where I live please help
sharon beedham Order on Amazon?
wood or metal pipe and get tons of good quality thick rope and roll across the beams and all nicely, this will make it look good and give the bird soft and larger grip to stand, feel comfy and fun
If you don't want to go out and buy a pvc cutter a large curated knife does the job, just sand down the cut ends to make them safe again.
Did you use any kind of glue to hold it together?
No, glue's unnecessary. It's all pressure fit.
I'm trying to make one but it won't stay together. Some parts keep falling off. Thanks for the awesome video
***** Perhaps you got the wrong size fittings-- it's common for people to take out the fittings and place them in the wrong box. Your fittings should all say "1/2 inch" somewhere.
Where can I buy all those pieces?
At a hardware store, like Lowe's or home Depot. You could also look up furniture PVC which has different colors.
where did you buy the bowls from
sharon beedham Quick Lock Crock. Ask a pet store associate.
Xolette Thanks for the feedback and the great video for inspiration!
where did you get the rope, trays, toys etc? Amazon? what are they called so that I can search them :)
I'd just go to the bird section of a pet store.
XoletteLife can you show me how you connected the toys
it's all wobbly and it leans forward I've had to take it apart again
What is the purpose for the wire basket?
It's optional, as I had stated. I use it for more storage, like for my box of bird toys.
Logan Stratton that's where you put all the things that you don't need.for this project.
How much did it cost you to buy all the things and toys for your parrots?
I mention the prices in the video! $30 for the structure alone.
what is the base33cm and 36cm or 26cm and 19cm?
Double the short base and long base measurements, and that will give you the length and width of the base. Be sure to watch this video if you haven't seen it yetruclips.net/video/L09W2KrpMhs/видео.html
My hardware store sells grey pvc, is that okay?
I'm not sure. As long as your bird doesn't chew it? I'd look up if there's a difference... like if it was coated in something that was harmful for birds.
+XoletteLife I just looked it up, it turns out it's called schedule 80 pvc because it's more thicker and stronger and the coloring is just to differentiate, and it's actually just the same thing just with colors and more durable, I think it would be great for my cockatoo
+XoletteLife and also great video !
+kareem Tashkandi That's what I thought... though, you might be able to find the white PVC in just another area of your store. I know sometimes they place different PVC in different aisles. Thanks for sharing that with me and watching. Hope your cockatoo likes his new gym!
i checked home depot and lowes, the items are so expensive. Where did you buy your items? Btw i live in NY.
I bought them in California. The structure by itself shouldn't be too expensive. I mention the prices in the captions. I recently made my sister a PVC gym that is attached to a plastic desk she has.... I'll be editing that one soon!
what kind of birds do you have im looking to add a new bird to my flock :)
I have conures, Fancy Green Cheek, Black Capped, and Maroon-bellied. They all have different personalities so be sure to do your research on them.
I've looked everywhere where I live and I can't get 2pvc crosses
Can you make a list of the measurements? I cant see them all.
All the measurements are in the description of the video.
I cant find where the exact mesurments are
Jaylynne Isom in the video description, under materials.
Thank you so much
hi! I was thinking I could follow your tutorial on my yt channel. would you mind if i put parts of your video in mine. I will credit you and put your link in the description
Sure! As long as you notate where the clips are from and the clips don't make up the entirety of the video, I'm good with it! Thanks for asking!
XoletteLife thankyou so much
what was the bird at the start (breed)
Nerdy Riley Meyer's Parrot
Thanks
I saw your dog's paw :)
Exactly how tall is this??
I think it's less than 8 feet. Several inches shorter than a standard doorway.
Ours was ~6 ft
sexy idea
Soo cooo! But no slide? What kind of play gym doesn't have a slide?? heheh... And I thought this "new play gym" was going to be for the cockatiels. haha.... You're like "This one looks way more awesome than my old one; I'm taking it!"
I’ve made the gym and it looks good but my cockatiel is terrified of it. Is there any way to slowly introduce her to it?
