  • I recently built a second gas laser projector for another whitelight Ar/Kr ion laser.
Im testing it out with the 35 milliwatt He Ne laser and the analog controller.
    All red, one color testing.

Keepin' the old school lasers alive! NICE! I've only seen one of those old Giant HeNe's in real life, some ten years ago at a get together for Laser nerds. The dude also had several other Helium lasers mixed with other gases to get other colors.
That "orangey-red" HeNe color is the first laser light color most people see in real life. Probably mostly true for Boomers and Gen X, and maybe even Millennials, but I guess there's a good chance it's not true any more for Gen Z. Laser Diodes kinda moved the window. Perhaps green handhelds are the first in person exposure the younger generations get?

This is the SP 107 OEM He-Ne from an old high speed copier. its the first "high powered" He Ne I ever got. That was 16 years ago now. This remains my favorite laser. The beam is very tight, divergence less than a milliradian and its divergence matches the Lexel 88 argons divergence out to over 200 feet so the beams overlap perfectly making a really awesome "whitelight". I am guessing you are probably correct in that todays "first timers" seeing a laser they will see a green laser pointer because the technology is so cheap and high powered.

    Pretty!
What He.Ne is that? Looks close to my 127/107 35mW.

@@charlesfreitag5503 you nailed it! It is a 107. This ones a bit different as the polarization plane is horizontal instead of vertical. Perfect for combining with an argon.

      @@Northerncalwolf Very nice!
Yeah, there is nothing quite like a HeNe beam, espc these 1m long units. I have a white line ar/kr but it needs some help. I've been lazy in getting some mesurements to my friend to fab a alignment ring for my OC, it's a tad off and only 3-5 lines come thru unless i poke it with a stick (lol). Someday i'll get her aligned properly..... Zeno will make sure of that... he's been on my ass about it for about 3 yrs now.
Either that or i'll trade someone for it.
Anyways, Love your setups and tnx for sharing!

@@charlesfreitag5503 Thank you for the kind words. I love gas lasers. I have since I got my first He Ne back in 87 and only got more intense when I got my first Argon, an American laser 60-X also from a copier. I really got into building projectors and tables once I discovered photonlexicon and the want ads and all that surplus laser gear. As far as your Ar/Kr I'm guessing you probably have a 300WC? Are you able to get much red out? One thing you might try is getting the "tuning collar" from an old Melles Griot He-Ne. Its a ring that is mounted to the mirror mount on the OC or even HR end of the hard sealed tube. It "might" fit the stem on your Ar/Kr. If not, that's what you need for tweaking the mirror cell mounts. Also, the tube might be high pressure from sitting to long or it might be end of life and all the gas has been buried or "burned off /used up". Zenodilodons a smart dude! Love talking to that guy. Ive had hour long conversations on the phone talking about laser stuff.
