Man it's a weard feeling looking at your own backyard in a video. I know these spots and these locomotives it's oddly satisfying having our small slice or rail get some love.
Nothing better than some Starnes BBQ sandwiches and a P&L video that I never had seen. I'm very proud to know that the Paducah and Louisville Railroad is the real life story of my older Brother's model railroad that came to life. We were a Paducah Family when our Dad passed away in the ICRR Shops in July 1950! The complete story was featured in a cover article in 1986 in Trains Magazine.
That was a fun day drayton, I still wish I had been running the 8507 but I don't usually complain when I get the 3800, she's pretty quick.
I literally grew up just down dixie highway from the first yard they showcased. Lively Shively is what the whole area is called.
You guys are the Gold Standard of train videos, the drone work on this one was excellent and what I enjoy most is the history lesson that comes with your productions. I moved from the Los Angeles area to Madisionville KY 3 years ago. I live just a short block from the CSX line that runs through the center of town, I ride my motorcycle up route 70 all the time and cross over P&L tracks all the time. They have a large switching yard there (I think) sometimes I see a train but luckily for me they are not switching cars around when I get to that crossing. You can sit there for 30 min or more while they jockey cars around. You guys need a place to crash for the night are welcome come over to our place, you just have to put up with 2 small dogs and a wife that is going to want to know your whole life story. I am baking all the time you can take some cookies with you for your journey and a loaf of Sour Dough Bread which I make a lot of and just freeze them for later use.
I don't know of any camp grounds around here but there may be one or 2. Hotels will run you at least 150.00 night how they get that much money for room in such a small town is beyond me. Keep up the great work.
Madisonville seems to have more and better hotels than Henderson, oddly enough.
We stayed the night at Kuttawa this past July, and witnessed a gorgeous moonrise over Kentucky Lake Dam. There's something very special, IMO, about that section of the P&L that goes across the Tennessee and Cumberland Rivers.
I’m so glad someone finally covered P&L in detail I live about 20 minutes away from Paducah so I see lots of P&L locomotives and my father works a quarry serviced by P&L thanks for the quality content Drayton
He really should come to Paducah, tons of rail history.
I believe the quarry is scottys.
I agree. I load auto frame cars that P&L picks ups.
Thanks for covering the Paducah and Louisville I grew up in Paducah Kentucky a little more than a mile from south yard
Did not disappoint as usual, Hot coffee, pancakes,(as I was enjoying mine) The coal yard was an absolute joy to watch, as was the DRONE footage, especially of the whole train, as a College“Basaball” Fan LOVED to see the KY Unit, the early “shoving unit” servicing the local business, the P&L does it all! So glad we’ll be returning in the near future, SPECTACULAR JOB DRAYTON!
I’ve been waiting for some high quality documentation of P&L, glad you finally gave us some. Can’t wait to chase it for myself
Trains Magazine in 1986 featured a cover article on the P&L which is my brother's model railroad that came to life!
I live a half mile from the tracks outside of princeton Kentucky I railfan this line alot
I really enjoyed the narration, not to fast, but thankfully not to slow! Love the paint too!
The Paint scheme is my Brother's design from his model railroad. Green represents the forest resources, black, our coal and the gray is the Limestone that is so plentiful and used for so much in this nation!
Stunning drone footage on this. Really great production. Keep up the over the top job.
We used to have to get on the PAL territory and I can say for a solid fact that LED light will burn your retinas through the back of your skull but when they passed and you turned around you could see what felt like a mile in front of the head end
I counted 100 loaded cars, the equivalent of 275 trucks ! Thanks for filming this run. Excellent work !
Amazing video! I never that there was another Class II Railroad that existed until now! Very interesting! I also like the classic EMD’s, but most of all, I love those beautiful loaded coal trains and the coal power electric generating plant at the end of the video! Love those some stacks and water tower as well! Awesome video!
watching trains ,drinking cold beer priceless
Watching other people cover a local operator to my area has always fascinated me. As someone who lives about 20 to 30 miles from Paducah, I’d say that the first half of the P&L’s name doesn’t get as much love as it should. I’ve seen a shocking number of wild lashups of equipment come out of the Southside yard and there’s a fair bit of action out of the locomotive shops that I’m surprised it gets so little coverage.
Great video! Those drone shots at Spring Lick were incredible!
Gorgeous aerial footage! And a great looking railroad.
10:14 looks like the gate got caught on the cantilever on that left signal
Great video as always, and glad you did a video of one of my hometown railroads. It’s cool to see the railroad action around where I live, as south/west Louisville (despite the unfortunate danger due to external circumstances) has some of the coolest railroad infrastructure in the city, dating back to the early days of rail in the city, including passenger services, such as the PAL and NS yards (former IC and Southern), along with all of the different interchanges.
Thank you for coming down to Kentucky to document the P&L. Hope to see more.
Excellent production. Can’t beat the drone footage for that dramatic effect. I live very close to the PAL mainline and love the sound of those locos working in the 8th notch heading up grade through Vine Grove and Radcliff. Tip top is the summit of the grade and the train then heads down grade into Kosmosdale. Keep up the first class work. Thank you.
Gotta love the "squat shack".,on the back end. A paint job would really spice up the multy purpose
Even in a group you are brave for venturing into the seedy parts of Louisville . Maybe you can cover pals subsidiary, the Evansville western.
Yes, the Evansville & Western is on the “to-do” list. Thanks for watching.
Watching this one and the Grand Elk Railroad one just before my interview for Wisconsin & Southern tomorrow. Definitely eases a lot of the nervousness. You and BradleyDCC both keep up the great work
planning on railfanning this railroad soon, thanks for the cool info!
Absolutely outstanding production! One of the best rail fan videos I’ve seen and spectacular drone shots.
Dome of the best train clips I've ever seen
Need to do a video on the Paducah and Louisville subsidiary Evansville Western.
I have a video of them myself that showcases some of the action they have. It's not high quality or narrated like this, but you might like it. ruclips.net/video/wziUL17xC-M/видео.html
I Iove these videos of yours hanging out with your friends. They have a nice livery (the railroad I mean), it's beginning to be that it makes a change to see a regional that's not orange
It's great to see the Old SD70Mac's still earning their keep On another railroad. Excellent video and drone footage. Keep up the great work.
⁰⁰
No
The barrier arms are out of sync at the Dixie Highway level crossing. They both start going down and then the left one stops and starts again after the loco is clear of the road.
It's a refreshing sight not too that long rake of coal wagons haven't fallen victim to the vandal's spray cans.
Hi from NZ,
Anthony.
That gate stuck up on dixie highway is scary!
AHHH, my Sunday AM coffee video has arrived! Thank you Drayton!
You always do an excellent job please be safe I give you a plus a job well done please be safe the Lord's blessings be with you
Love It. The NS Train with 9481 Leading was Train 223.
That shoving platform was a great idea for modeling
Boy U guys are GOOD
They are on my to do list for sure
at 17:48 is that guy smoking while on top of that Gasoline tanker after teh train passes?
Drayton, thank you for documenting the Paducah & Louisville Railroad for us! Your chase of the local was interesting. That shoving platform is unique. The locations you chose to showcase the coal train on its trip from the mine to the power plant where great to view and showed the length and power needed to move the coal train.!
Yall know how to camp and I like it!
Thank you for pronouncing Louisville the correct, local way lol. Great video!
In the recent past,; I made mention
of. ( Light emitting diodes) in crossing lights to signals. they use miniscule voltage super low maintenance. and. crisp brightness.
Now I know what a "ghetto caboose" is! Another very good video by you.
Very nice presentation I really like the LED headlights with the non condescend ditch lights contrast, Caltrain uses the same type of thing but ditchlights instead of headlights.
Amazing camera angles and learn something out of this video love them sd70macs green and that now knew little bit about Louisville area
I am an expert in this area
dude nice video glad to see some p&l railway
One of the Class I's PAL interchanges with is the BNSF in Paducah. Wyoming coal comes down the BNSF through southern Illinois to Paducah, and interchanges with the PAL, who takes the coal to barge terminals along the Ohio and Tennessee Rivers. This is usually done with run through BNSF power and crews.
The same company that owns the PAL, also owns the Evansville & Western (EVWR). Their power has the same paint scheme, just with different lettering. They operate the former L&N line between Evansville and St. Louis.
It will be interesting to see how PAL survives if the coal business goes away. Other than a few yard jobs, and one manifest each way between Louisville and Paducah, there's not much business other than coal.
I think P&L’s yards are mostly empty these days. Of course what railyard isn’t?
@@bluegrassman3040 south yard more than likely. It’s practically the hub for BNSF and CN’s Fulton Turn, it also leads to the old IC shops built in the 1920’s and potentially an old yard entrance line that now serves as an industrial line for a lumberyard and occasionally a boxcar drop off.
@@nolancain8792 one of my uncles started out with the GM&O out of Jackson, TN, shortly before the merger. When ICG sold that line to NS, he had to work out of Memphis for a time, then out of Fulton. He told me that he used to build trains to go to Louisville, but he never did work on that division(now P&L).
Amazing video and production as always Drayton. Shots from the drone are second to none. They look like something I would expect to see in a commercial or promotional video for a railroad. Hope to see you make a video in Wisconsin someday.
Great video! I used to live along the P&L near Dixie Highway and enjoyed their trains with those old GP units at that time. LP1 and PL4 tended to run in the dark most of the time then. Also, you’re spot on about Kentucky street and Oak street yard being a rotten and dangerous neighborhood for sure. The ICG also used to switch the Frito-Lay plant in Shively many years ago before it closed.
Whoa! Cool!
thank you share this video other
from Australia
The point from DIB here is if you go to Louisville, don't get dead
LOVE THE X-SP GP-38-2 ! SP LIVES
Where I come from I have a class three regional short line called the Fort Worth and Western Railroad they use incandescent bulb headlights and LED ditch lights which is the opposite of what the train in your video is
Excellent video, i live in vine grove and hear P&L all the time.ufortunately most of the trains other than locals pass here after dark. I remember when P&L started up they had mostly worn out GP10's.at that time i lived in rineyville and saw them all the time struggling with coal trains, of course then they were pulling about 70-75 cars and no dpu's.
Thx and greetings from Germany
Amazing drone action!
Another great video. What a shame that Louisville is so horrible.
@Delay in Block Productions Jolly good show guys 🙂
Love the drone footage!!!
Well done gentlemen!
Awesome variety of trains over different terrain!
This is great, deserves an A+!
Makes me excited a because gotten better that drone and that excites you that coming back to St. Louis Here tips for favorite Drone plot and film so there’s lots amazing places so here we go 1. Lenox Tower 2. WR 3. East St Louis Valley Junction 4. Grand Avenue 5. Alton IL Amtrak Station 6. Hartford 7. Pacific 8. HN Cabin 9. Litchfield 10. Southern Crossing 11. Greenville 12. Keysport 13. Valley Park 14. West Alton MO
Excellent work Drayton!
Man that drone footage and the sound.. Was that looped from trackside? It was epic, as was the flying and camera work... Loved it!
Great video 🚄🚄👍
Oh my gosh I would love to catch this train but you guys had the perfect set up I love it!!
I was in Martinsville Racetrack 5 years love Racetrack with NS go though.
I remember the 2012 broadcast of the spring race at Martinsville and Mike Joy talked about the line as a freight went by when they came back from commercial break
I'm not sure how many of you caught this, but at 10:15 notice how the left side crossing arm doesn't fully descend until after the train is already over the crossing. Surely that's a massive safety concern and hopefully it has been reported and fixed. We all know people don't just slow and come to a stop if they see the lights are on at a crossing and the arms are still up.
Its nice to see some older SD Power being used ; A dying breed of power,
It would be nice to see a train being pulled by a string of SD40-2s
This reminds me of the Wheeling and Lake Erie 262 that I hear at 3 am that is sort of my alarm clock for work.
Gotta love those MACs! Looks great on those drone shots.
I have 8 Paducah and Louisville railroad spikes
I absolutely love your videos! The Paducah and Louisville has been one of my favorite railroads and I really appreciate this video. Any chance if you're down in Florida doing a video on The Bay Line in Panama City FL and runs to Dothan AL? I really enjoy your channel.
The Bay Line is high on our list!
Awesome dude. I am Active Duty Army stationed at Fort Knox, Kentucky and their mainline runs straight through and services the Base as well.
awesome video!!! keep up the good work Drayton!
Hey, that’s an awesome video! I really like the colors on the locomotives. It’s a nice dark aqua green. 🙂
ZR2 FTW!! 2017 2.8 here!
Nice catches! I’m hopping for more good content! 😁
at the 10 min mark, did you notice the crossing gate hung up on the signal light structure?
Visit the Indiana RailRoad they operate on the Illinois side in the morning and evening. And on Friday 8-7 PM there is the CN intermodal train to Newton to transfer with the CN.
Excellent drone footage. :-)
Great video! Loved it, thanks! :) : :)
At around 10:50 did that gate on the left really not go down til the train was in the crossing?
I been on p&l Railroad all my life
another great video. thank you
Well done. 👍
Hi Arthur!, I'm from Fishers! Nice camping setup!
Shoot I live about 40min southwest of Indianapolis in a town called Martinsville.
Thanx for the great videos especially the overhead stuff. Are the rear locos remote controlled DPUs or manned??
Your right about some of the areas being rough you need several people and carry pistols the trouble makers do
It’s not only CSX but Paducah is a huge hub for CN and BNSF, not sure what happened to UP in the last few years. Tons of abandoned rails downtown as well, some of which are street running from the old N.C&StL days.
I think the UP gave up all the coal business they had in southern Illinois and western Kentucky. I don't think there's any UP trains south of Benton IL anymore. May still be a local turn down to Marion IL, I don't know. Most of the action comes off this line at Benton, and goes west to Gorham to join the Chester Sub. This is a primary route between Chicago and Texas.
I barely remember the NC&StL. They ran from Bruceton TN to Paducah, and swapped cars with the CB&Q that came down from Centralia IL. That continued with the L&N and BN, until the early 1980's. The L&N line was abandoned north of Murray shortly after that.
@@eelb53 there’s still remnants of it all over downtown, the old station still has the rails and concrete foundation, one street still has railroad paint on the pavement, two businesses still have rails leading to the buildings, street running rails in two locations, one of them at the riverfront near the old freight office. Unfortunately, most of it is in a very dangerous area of town.
Train designation: RS2L
Train HORN: Leslie RS3L.
Cute, ain't it?
Class act, cheers
Wow nice train
Great video! Beautiful videography as always. Don't really know who is giving this a thumbs down but ok.
