    I’ve been collecting hockey cards since 1980 . Hockey is the last sport to start recognizing that there is a difference between first card, rookie card and first year playing cards..ten years from now some of these cards might b considered true rookies

    I went nuts buying these for the Central Red Army, Moscow Dynamo, and Khimik team cards.

      They were super-hyped due to Fedorov but in reality these CRA cards were actually easier to get than common base cards.

    Some people may consider the '91-92 OPC Jagr a Rookie Card because it is his first in a standard OPC Set (or base). ..but by card industry standards it is not officially a RC. If you get a chance watch the video (RUclips) on a box opening of 1972 OPC Baseball with gum issues and your example would not bother you quite as bad as his $5K risk.

    EEh, that wax box must have been stored in a very warm and damp environment, but hey look on the bright side - you only spent $15 bucks and still got some nice cards out of it - at least relative to the set.. About a month ago I saw this guy break a box of 1972 OPC Baseball and the packs had the same exact issue you had here with the gum, however his issue was 10x worse because the gum seeped all into the first 5-6 cards, so yea it was awful seeing Roberto Clemente OPC's wrecked with gum muck, lol.. If anyone reading this wants to see a completely ruined box of vintage OPC baseball - just type in "Jabs Family 1972 OPC break", lol.
    As far as the hockey cards, yea, I wouldn't recommend getting any of that graded because it really is a PSA 10 or bust situation when it comes to cards like this - especially now with how crazy grading fees have become recently - not to mention the turnaround time, which I hear is like 10 months.... It's just too risky, well unless you plan to add them to your PC then that is a different story, but I don't see why anyone would do that and waste their money... But yea, I think the reason why some of these cards go for so much in a PSA 10 is because of the low pops, because like I just pointed out - it's PSA 10 or bust so not many collectors would be willing to bet a $20 on a 10, well unless they're submitting in bulk.
    If it were me tho, I'd toss that set in a binder - that's how I keep all of my sets in my PC.. I mean I do enjoy thumbing though my sets on occasion and reading the backs because I am a collector and a hockey fan after all, lol... As a matter of fact I just acquired this 91-92 Topps set along with some Blackhawks memorabilia as part of a trade last weekend for some of my junk wax era baseball cards ironically enough. Unfortunately there isn't a whole lot going on in this set as far as rookies and value because this is like the height of the junk wax era in hockey...

    • @JunkWaxInvestor
      @JunkWaxInvestor  3 года назад

      Yeah for sure. Not much value except it is cheap nostalgia. Just fun opening this old stuff. I agree with your grading view. I would also through in the player set collectors on the PSA registry would be after 10s of certain stars if they are playing that game, otherwise just nice to have sleeved and in the PC!

    • @Swoop187OG187
      @Swoop187OG187 3 года назад

      @@JunkWaxInvestor Absolutely. I open this type of stuff all the time - well I used to until these junk wax era boxes ballooned in price, lol.... I used to get unopened material like this for 5 bucks a box and that was max, sometimes even 2 bucks and it's always a fun break (well unless it's 1991 score baseball, lol). And indeed it's absolutely nostalgia to me too - I'm 40 so I grew up opening this stuff, I mean I have been collecting since 1988 and seriously collecting since 89/90 - yea, I was a serious 10-year-old collector, lol.. I remember 91-92 Topps hockey was 50 cents a pack and the OPC was 65 cents but you could only get that at the LCS, lol... Then when we were adults and started opening this shit up we realized that everyone was ripping off little kids, lol.... Seriously, I was breaking a box of junk wax and was thinking to myself 'damn I got ripped off as a kid" eh whatever tho.
      On a serious note - the thing that bugs me is that- at least at one time kids had an opportunity to buy cheap packs and boxes, now that's gone from them - because these new collectors or those just getting back into the hobby or believe this is a zero risk investment are jacking the prices up on wax as if a PSA 10 1990-91 OPC Brett Hull is a sure investment - that was at one time a $3 bucks a box for a reason, lol.. IMO, that is the truth and it will say that way and these people are wrong..
      Look, I collected from 1988-1998 and then I grew up and did all of the adult thing and then at 35-years old I came back - and only because I saw the card section a Walmart and got a crazy ass overcoming of nostalgia and something came over me and I bought some hockey cards once again and I pulled a Matthews YG out of my first pack not even knowing how much it was worth so I left it sitting on my coffee table for a week before I even bothered to check ebay-- of course then I was back into collecting - now I have literally a 1,000,000+ cards... Yes that is for real...
