I can't decide whether I dodged a bullet not ordering this or will forever be wishing I did order it.

@@robossuperchannel9434 well he’s working on a third game, and there’s room for improvement, so perhaps it’s off to a bad start and will age over time into something better. I expect you’ll be able to find copies in the secondary market near-term anyway.

What do you think of the aesthetic? I really like the counters but the map has the look of 1980s, low-resolution pixelated computer graphics to my eyes. Do you think that the Piacenza map you recently played looks far more appealing and evocative of the era?

@@IRLBemused Piacenza has a better map, yes. You can’t really talk about the aesthetic for this game without talking about playability; they are interlinked. Unless you’re hanging the 7YWBS games on the wall, the decision to be art first across the entire suite of components really harms the ability to mechanically interact with it on the table.

    What a hot mess!

Yes, this mess is NOT normal and is the result of very poor moves and tactics. During this period, a general would hold the line with all his units (taking the time to do so and not exposing any flank), first fires with cannons to reduce morale and disorganized the enemy and then launch charges at weakened points to break the enemy line. None of these tactics here.
The system punishes generals who do not apply these tactics. ;-)

Ad Hoc has the feel of a “one man band” outfit. The rules as released are terrible, plus as you mention the lack of development and playtesting is rather evident.
The Battle of Minden is a poor debut for the company.
