Tractor supply, guy asks me to help him get some chicks (baby chickens). I say, "sorry I'm busy". He gets annoyed and demands I get a box and collect 20 for him. I just walk away. I'm picking out dog food when he storms up to me with the manager demanding I get fired. I say, "screw this, I'm not putting up with up with this guys crap anymore. I quit!". The man looks shocked, the manager with complete defeat mutters, "sir, he's not wearing a vest or anything. Why did you think he was an employee? He doesn't work here", and walks away. The guy yells at him, "wait! Who's going to get me my chickens?" The manager just ignored him and walked for the back or the store. I laughed myself to death all day about it.

This reminds me of the time, my friends and I got held up for like half an hour, because my absolutely train obsessed friend spent like half an hour, helping random people plan routes at the ticket machine. Everyone thought he worked at the station, he was just a college student who really loved trains.

I was at Walmart once and the phone was ringing near the vacuums. Nobody was around. It rang many times. I picked it up and said "Thank you for calling Walmart, how can I help you?" and it was a little old woman asking about the vacuums. I told her I'd look and helped her for over 5 minutes and she decided which one she wanted and thanked me saying she'd have her daughter bring her in to buy it.

Thank you for doing that. Not enough are patient or kind with those who are older or unable to comprehend things immediately. And workers especially often get agitated with them when often its just an issue of fixed communication needs and methods. Youre legit prolly better than the worker who woulda answered(i used to work walmart) and youre legit a chill person. Much respect and have a great life

My dad once gave me 20 bucks to buy something from my Uni's bookstore. I wanted to get my money's worth, so I combed through almost everything. Coincidentally, I happened to be wearing a lanyard with my keys on them. Over the course of about 20 minutes, no less than 5 people approached me to ask where stuff was. I had no clue lol.

On the flip side, while I'm working at my job in my very obvious uniform which is very obvious, I get asked all the time if I work there. Sometimes I get asked that even when I'm putting out stock. The human mind amazes me.

Honestly I ask this as a like way to say “I’m gonna ask you for help now” like example “hi excuse me do you work here? D’you know where __ is?” But if they just plainly ask you… uhm?? 🤨

I worked next to a grocery store with identical uniforms to another a block away. The only difference is the name tag, and even there, it's close enough that unless you're staring at somebody's chest, you wont know.
I got all sorts of shit any time I went to that store after work to get groceries (Yes, I worked at a grocery store, but they had deals we didnt... and we made minimum wage with zero discounts. So I shopped both).
I would MUCH rather ask somebody than stare at a stranger's chest, with a socially awkward situation if they're not an employee.

    • @panagea2007
      @panagea2007 10 месяцев назад +1

I always ask first because these stories show that you can get it wrong without realizing it. But if they say no I always apologize and don't escalate.

I have a couple of ideas about that, as I get asked at a lot of the places I frequent. However, this list is just based on my thoughts, perceptions and experiences. It is also very subjective to the store you are in.
      1. Most people want to avoid socially awkward situations, so they ask first. They know about these stories and want to avoid these situations, and they also want to avoid making any assumptions. It is safer to ask and be told "no" than to potentially embarrass yourself and/or the other person.
      2. If they see you help someone else, they are going to think you work there. You may be there shopping with your mother or spouse, but that other person doesn't know the relationship and is going to presume you are strangers.
      3. You may look like you know your way around the place. If it is a store you frequent--or a type of department or area you frequent at this or other stores--you will look like you are in your natural environment and you tend to be able to zero in on just what you are looking for. Think someone who shops at Walmart and is still mostly at home in Target, or someone who spends a lot of time around electronics and just looks like they belong in an electronics department.
      4. You do not look like you are shopping. You are moving around with purpose and beelining to what you are there for rather than perusing and searching and considering. You walk with intent while being calm and collected.
      5. You are not pushing a buggy/trolley or carrying a basket, but have some items in hand. They may think you are just handling small amounts of product as a result or adjusting shelves or something.
      6. Some people have a natural charisma that draws people to them. Think people who are just constantly smiling or seem relaxed in their environment or exude friendliness and helpfulness or are obvious extroverts. They are approachable. These kinds of people often end up in customer service jobs and excel in them, too. If a person needs help, they are going to look for someone who is not going to blow up on them or be rude in the event that they make the mistake of misidentifying an employee and customer.

I was in a Chapters (bookstore in Canada and also known as Indigo in some places).
I was dressed in a sort of black shirt and black pants with shoes on.
A lady came up to me asking “Where is (this book?” I had to apologize I didn’t work here.
It was a huge bookstore. I was maybe 12.

THIS right here is why I despise ethnically themed restaurants in north america. Nothing wrong with people from different backgrounds opening restaurants but I looooooooathe the company owned ones that will only hire people of a certain type (asians for chinese/japanese restaurants, hispanics for mexican styled establishments, etc) it just feels really gross and I feel like I'm bothering them everytime I go to someplace like this. I know it's "for the atmosphere" or "immersion" but it really rubs me the wrong way.

Not really a "I don't work here moment" but I'm very helpful. Once I was at an arts and crafts store and a woman asked me for help getting things off a high shelf. She was a small old woman so I did. I helped her get a couple of things because she seemed to have trouble raising her arms up and when she walked away the manager of the store asked if I wanted to work there. I politely declined so he gave me a couple of coupons as a reward.

I was sick one day and stopped off at the grocery store to get some odds and ends with my mom and had to go to the doctor and when he diagnosed me with a viral infection he told me to get a prescription filled and to go home and rest. While we were waiting my mom decided we should go grocery shopping and I don't know why but I went in. I was walking behind my mom and looked absolutely miserable. I had even called out of the store I worked in because I was too sick to work. One of my regular customers,An elderly Portuguese lady.,walked up and asked me where the water was. I told her,"I don't work here." She told me I needed to help her. I was standing as far back from her as I could. I was sick,I had a fever, and I just wanted to be left alone. As we walked around this woman tailgated me! She kept insisting that I put her water in her cart. I could barely walk around the store. My mom literally turned around, looked at her and said,"Ma'am,my daughter does not work here and she's very sick." The lady looked at my mom and said,'But she always helps me." I gave up after that. I went and sat in the car. As I'm laying on the backseat the lady comes over and asks me to put her stuff in her car. I turned on my side, laid down and fell asleep.

For me, someone mistakenly thought I was a waiter and beckoned me to get them their drink. I did and got a $20 tip. I didn’t work at the seafood restaurant where I was mistaken for a worker, but now I did soon after that and it was fun! Pays well too, both in cash/checks, and also some food and drinks on an employee discount. It was awesome till the pandemic left me jobless… . Still though, it was fun and I loved it!

I actually get this a lot as a security guard whenever I'm patrolling outside the property I'm assigned to for the day. Just yesterday I had a guy yell at me and my colleague that his car was broken into in the private lot across the street and that we didn't do anything to prevent it.
My calm explanations that my jurisdiction extended only to the venue parking lot, that I am legally only able to protect the venue's property, and that I have no legal right to even be on the privately owned parking across the street where he was parked couldn't convince him to leave my colleague alone so we just told him to call the police and sent him on his way while he was still screaming and cussing.
I'm sympathetic about what happened to him, but I'm not a cop. I am restricted by law to protect my client's property only and I am completely unable to do anything about something that happened on someone else's property as I am solely an enforcer for my client's property and have no authority beyond it.

I got one, but it's me being good. This happened at least 10 years ago now. But i was in a store with my gf at the time a lady was struggling to get something heavy in her cart. I stopped and asked her if she needed help he thanked me then another lady ask me for help i did. Then they both said they would like to speak to my manager cause i was doing a great job. I laughed and was like I'm here with my gf. I don't work here. I just hope someone would do the same for my grandmother if she needed the help. They still told the manager. Haha.

Went to meet my (older by a few years, prettier sister - The Golden Child as they are now called) at her new workplace, a hotel. Walked into where I'd thought she said to wait for her. A woman bustles in, sees me just standing there, and without asking anything tells me to stop standing around and start folding the paper napkins for the lunch rush. I said "How would you like them folded?" and she shows me and rushes out again. So I stood and folded quite a few paper napkins...Then my sister walks in one door, and that woman walks back in another...and the woman does a double take, gasps and said "OMG I thought you were (Sister's name!) I'm so sorry!!" and if looks could kill, both the woman and I would be dead, because NO WAY my sister thought I looked like her. That would mean I was as "pretty" as her, as well turned out etc. etc. I just smirked, let the woman apologize, and Sis stewed for years on that one ha ha ha. It still gives me a lot of totally non guilty pleasure.

Only time I remember anything like this happening was I was at a plant nursery happened to run into somebody that I knew so I was talking to them and some kind of irate guy comes up while we're talking and rudely asks if we were going to go and load his truck up for him. Just looked at him and said no. And he started to say something I said we don't work here go away. We didn't even look like anybody that worked there not even remotely like their clothing

Used to work at a well-known outfitter brand distribution center. There was an actual store not too far away, where we got an employee discount if we had our badge. I kept mine in my back pocket, so no one could see it. I was walking around the store and happened to randomly make eye contact with some guy, so I smiled. "Do you work here?" he asked. The store had a uniform of blue jeans and a khaki button-up shirt with the store logo embroidered on it. I was wearing blue jeans, yes, along with a blue-green t-shirt with a giant yellow cartoon character on it. Cheese from Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends. Complete with "I like chocolate milk" quote.

I frequently get asked if I know where a certain item is. Sometimes I help if I’m not on a tight schedule. Once I was told, after saying I don’t know where an item is, paraphrasing, ‘You’re the one that should know! You’re the one who works here!’ Frankly, I find it more humorous than annoying.

I was standing in the entrance way of CVS, talking to a coworker as I was waiting for another coworker to finish buying something. A line was forming at checkout because the cashier wasn't there. The checkout line was staring at me until finally someone came up to me asking if I was the manager in a huff. (I work in a place that requires nice work clothes. Slacks/blouse type deal). Apparently everyone thought I was. I was like, "no."
As for Walmart, everyone apparently assumes I work there. Considering I hate Walmart as a company and avoid shopping there, these occurrences don't help.

11:32 I had a somewhat similar experience while waiting in a queue for a tattoo shops Flash Day. I don't live in the area anymore, but I like the tattoo parlour so I travelled back for it. I have a somewhat... alt look (Lots of piercings, tattoos obviously, coloured hair) so when I got to chatting with the other people in the queue (It was awesome, there was like about 15 of us just made friends bc we were bored) I got asked, very randomly, no lead up to it that I could see, if I knew where to buy *drug* (I'm not sure what it was he was after lol). Took me a minute but I was like 'Uh... no?' and then the couple behind me (both quite straight-laced looking compared to me) instantly chimed in like 'Yeah we know where you can buy it'. Genuinely was quite funny for me

This was not so much awkward as funny.
Many years ago, I was vacationing with my (former) wife and her kids at the seashore in Wildwood, NJ and one day, we decided to go on a family outing to the Wildwood Zoo. Most of the animal enclosures were (at least at that time) open air, and as we went from one pen to another, I was talking to my youngest stepson about the various animals. Gradually, a line formed up behind us and other zoo patrons started asking questions about the animals, which I answered to the best of my knowledge and ability. Finally, one person piped up and asked, "How long have you been working here?" My wife and I just looked at each other for a moment, stunned. Then she started laughing, while I turned to the person who asked the question ans said, "I don't work here." He asked, "Then how do you know so much about the aniumals?" to which I responded, "I read a lot, I grew up watching a lot of nature and wildlife documentaries on television, and I spent a good amount of time at the Philadelphia Zoo when I was a kid." He was flummoxed for a moment. Then the entire crowd burst out laughing. Good times!

People often asked for help when I shopped in the big blue box. I didn't work there. They recognized me because I worked at the nearby big orange box. But I still helped, because I knew where everything was and blue is terrible at customer service. I couldn't do too much of that though...after all, they were the competition.

This is unrelated, but when I was a little girl, we went to our mom’s friends house for a football party, where my mom’s friend gave us both Teacup Piggies, which were fuzzy electronic pigs that slept in teacups. I named mine Olivia and i proceeded to enjoy some polish snacks my mom’s friend’s husband had made. It was this delicious meat on some kind of toast that I just couldn’t resist! Found out mid bite that there was pork in it, and that I had eaten said pork in front of my new pig friend whom I believed was secretly _alive._
That was an awkward moment for me.

My dad and i tend to dress professionally for work. I always get questions at Aldis which i answer, despite not actually being the manager. My dad scared a publix employee. He's fairly tall, was circumstantially wearing a Publix green shirt, and gives off aggressive regional manager vibes. He walks into the bathroom, sees an employee just standing there using his phone, gives him a bit of an annoyed look, and the guy fumbles his phone and leaves the bathroom. My dad told me this when he was annoyed with the kid for messing around and i had to point out he looks like the manager.

I'm sorry, but the whole "take your name tag off" doesn't work. I work in a store with red polo shirts as the uniform, but I work a restaurant with a black shirt and a different logo on it. Even taking my name tag off and having a completely different uniform, I still run into trouble. People are just dumbasses. If you even slightly look like you know what you're doing, they're going to assume you work there and will throw a fit if you don't help them in the way they want.

Back in the '90's, I was having dinner at China Grill in NYC. It was a business dinner but a few of the team wanted to smoke. No one had cigarettes. I volunteered to go across the street to the Hilton to buy a pack. I made my purchase and was waiting to cross the street to go back to the restaurant when a limo pulled up, the back window went down and a guy asked me if I was working tonight. I stood there not knowing what to say. They finally drove away when I didn't answer. Crossing the street I realized they thought I was a prostitute.

I just look at him, point to my uniform and read the name of my job off slowly annunciating every letter. He was like "omg im so sorry!". I said dude it doesnt matter if i did work here. I'm at Walmart, getting some cleaning supplies after work. My crime was wearing a blue polo to work that day. This older lady comes up to me wanting to know whether Walmart carried a certain kind of pet medication. I told her I didn't know, which was unsatisfactory to her. "What do you mean you don't know!?" I pointed to my gun and badge (which was on my right side, facing her). I told her, "I don't think most Walmart employees carry guns." She looked thoroughly annoyed and walked off. In my defense, my blue polo had a big ass silver star and **** Sheriff department embroided on it.

I worked at FedEx as a courier ( Navy blue shirts/ purple stripe down both side and FedEx logo on shirt) I was walking in Walmart on my break and this lady asked me where something was and I told her “I don’t know”. She then said “Why don’t you know here it is”. I said “Cause I don’t work here” the look on her face. Me and the Walmart employee both looked at out uniforms and died laughing

There was this one time when i had just got off at work at my grocery store. I had to go to another store before I went home and as I'm shopping, this one lady asks me if I know if some sort of coupon was still valid. Mind you I was wearing a uniform that clearly showed a different name than Target. I told her I really didn't know as I don't work for target, but since i'm a nice guy, i directed her to the service desk.

I got one. My mom and I went to Target and a woman came up to us and ask us if we worked there. We’re we wearing a red shirt? No, we’re we wearing khakis? No. Well what were we wearing? I was wearing a black dress and my mom was wearing black leggings and T-shirt. Oh and my mom was pushing a cart and I had my phone out with headphones on

I once accidently wore a royal blue polo into a Best Buy and, while walking around, a little girl walked up to me and asked where the bathroom was. She was so small and cute that I would have felt like a jerk if I didn't help her so I took a quick look around and stopped or in the back of the store over the shelves she couldn't see over. I pointed her in the direction and she thanked me.

I work in Atlanta, I've been driving for 30 years. I'm scared too..
My advice is to be predictable.
That means use your turn signals, keep in your lane, follow other people at a safe distance, and know you aren't in a race.
When traffic gets intense, try to stay focused on your lane, you don't have to watch everyone, just the cars that effect your lane.
I've never had a wreck, accident, I've never even "traded paint".
I've had some close calls, near misses.. it's perfectly ok to stop at the next store to get yourself together after one of those.
It's important to be predictable, so that the people who are driving crazy can get themselves around you.
In GTA, the npc's follow all the traffic laws, use turn signals, etc.
so the player knows what they're doing and can go around them. Be the npc..
      Good luck!

This wasn’t an awkward moment, but one time, when my brother and I were at Spirit Halloween, some kid came up to me and asked me if I worked there. I told him no and he just left me alone after that.

i was at the dallas museum of illusions a couple weeks back and a lady called me over to try and explain an illusion because she thought i worked there. she was nice about it and i did try to figure out why it was like that (the placard didn't explain it) but i still wonder to this day why she thought i worked there. like i was wearing all black, yeah, but it was in the context of an outfit that typically gets me mistaken for a Hot Topic employee lol

I started working at a record store at 16 and when I went to record stores as a customer, people often came to me with questions. (The store I worked at was highy trafficked, so maybe my face was familiar. Anyway, one time, I was at another location of a store that I worked at with another employee from my store. People started asking questions and we tried to answer and tell them we don't work there, but more people kept asking as we helped, but explained we don't work there.
The next time we were at work my coworker/friend and I were called into the head manager's office to explain what happened. We explained we tried to be helpful and told people we don't work there. We were caught between wanting to actually be helpful, but explaining we didn't work there. End result: Our boss told us not to go to the other locations of the store as customers. Ugh.
