I think the reason for it being awkward is the lack of understanding of what a furry is and lack of enthusiasm
furries tend to be outgoing and social (introverts can be in the fandom as well though less common). A furry is also a person who likes animals with human characteristics and may portray the liking by drawing or fursuiting

If you are wanting to do this again and get better interactions with the fursuiters here are some tips: they have blind spots so they can only see straight in front of them. You do want to be loud because you can hardly hear out of the heads. A good way to start a conversation is not acting like an animal because they will think you’re crazy, you can ask who made there suit or if they made it themselves.
