You can add the paint to the joint compound and just paint it on if you want to use a paintbrush instead of spray paint. Sometimes it's more relaxing to sit and paint that way than to use spray paint.

I think it's easier using spray paint like you stated. Very nice. I bet it's beautiful in off white with that texture and framed.
