DAC's language is crude, but I don't think he means any disrespect. Just like when he refers to his family as "White Trash" and his sister a "Whore". Some folks may prefer to use softer words, ..but the facts still remain the same.

Well that IS the point of the phrase. It is a compliment (at least when directed at the worker). It can also be used as an insult but only when directed at the boss/taskmaster "he's working him as if he's a nygr," meaning the boss is being a mean a-hole. Words are just words. The message is all that matters. Learn to use your brains and comprehend 1) intent, 2) context. nothing else matters in communication (or should)

Honky Tonk Angels/ Wild Side of Life is a reference to the 1952 Hank Thompson song, Wild Side of Life. I didn't know God made Honky Tonk Angels are part of the lyrics.
Roy recorded Great Speckled Bird in 1938.
      Both legendary songs.

Your reaction, as a black man, to a song that is very dear to me earned you a like and subscribe from this Southern boy. I never met my grandad (dad's dad). He died just before I was born. He is a legendary figure in our family history and shares many MANY parallels to the subject of this song. That's why it is so precious to me. A strange thing to say about a song that seems so crass at first blush.
I appreciate the fact that you were able to overlook the use of that word. I understand that it's usage could be incredibly offensive, regardless of the context in which it is used. Like you, I've never ventured off the beaten path regarding DAC's music. I don't want to taint the image I have in my head of him as a songwriter. I know that fact betrays some cognitive dissonance on my part. I'm willing to live with that.
I enjoy your commentary and style. Reminds me alot of my favorite uncle (also a black man coincidentally).

Personally, i think you handled that controversial remark properly. As a compliment. My first const. i got was laying sewer pipe after the wheel trencher went through. i worked for a a Black Gentelman named I.D. and a Mexican Gentleman named Elias. The owner said if you manage to keep up with those 2. you'll make a hand, i worked my ass off to "try" and keep up with them. i can remember my Dad saying that "remark" to me in the 60s or he'd say "He worked me like a rented mule". Coe was pretty "outlaw country" his whole career and alot of his stuff never made it to radio for obvious reasons but he was on every Juke box in every country bar i was ever in and there was alot of 'em i'd been in. there ain't no prejudice when your in a 6' deep ditch with your ass higher than your head laying sewer pipe all day with other men or after work having beer. we were just men, hard working men.

"Poor white trash". This song is a remarkable poem about a culture of poverty in the south.
The little part about "workin' like a ni**er". This is something i heard growing up occasionally from blue collar laborers. I dont think many older people even thought about what they were saying. Like most figures of speech.
Although, My dad and my uncles would say "Im working like a dirty fool!" I never heard my dad use the N word. He was too educated and polite to talk like that. Also he grew up with black kids. His family was extremely poor. His first "girlfriend" was a black girl when he was 10. He remembers how they got jeered at by some kids and it made him vow not to be like that.

The "controversy" is fabricated by people who just don't understand. His use of the N word wasn't a slam at people of color it was a nod to how hard they hard to work to survive. When he said people said his family was "poor white trash", that is the equivalent. Because DAC grew up poor, he understood prejudice. Obviously I didn't know the man so maybe I'm reading it wrong but having grown up really poor myself that's how I feel he meant it.

A few things not noted in this review, and something rather interesting about this song, other than the obvious use of a term considered objectionable even when used as a compliment. The musical arrangement in this song is as diverse as the group of people responding to it, below. In addition to the haunting and plodding pace of the verses, and the 2/4 signature of the choruses, there is a bridge that switches into a swing beat and then the outro is classic ragtime. Also, the entire last stanza of the song is a mish-mash of references to old country tunes that only my daddy remembers! And I'm old! :D

DAC was considered one of the Outlaws in Country music in the 70s. But, he's the Real Deal. I've seen him threaten and cuss people out from the stage. The last time I saw him, he got pissed off and threw a mic stand with a boom on it into the crowd. It had to have hit several people! Cops showed up, and took him backstage. I figured he was going to jail, but after about a 20 minute break, he came back out and played some more. Didn't see or hear a thing about the incident.
Another time I was waiting with about a dozen people, for the box office to open. All of sudden, the door opened, and there stood David Allen Coe, and he asked "Anybody got any good drugs?" Alas, I, nor anyone else had any. He talked to us for a few minutes, before going back inside. I got a picture taken with him that night.

DLC is the outlaw that them in outlaw country were afraid of. The line, “ working like a “n” for room & board. Sir, that ain’t no slur, just a reference to hard backbreaking and unappreciated labor. Them four words explained the kind of labor that ALL poor folks lived and sometimes still do in the country South, without writing a small book to explain it.

DAC was in prison most of his early life and he's a little crazy...and so did Merle. haha
He took that whole outlaw country thing to another level. Singers at the time were really wanting to sing very raw and real life stuff. Waylon and Cash Hank Jr, even Roger Miller were getting really rebellious. He's just one of those guys that if you tell him he can't do something he just has to do it.
I remember him saying he's a story teller and in movies you can write characters to say anything and not get flack for it so why can't a musician do that? And he wanted to sing it the way people spoke and that's how folks he knew spoke. He's actually a very good song writer and has some really great songs. He had a very tough life and it's crazy that he's still alive. haha

Your reaction is a testament in not discarding a person or a country due to one incident or period of time in their life/history. Some people are quick to condemn the entirety of an existence based on one thing or a series of things. They close the book and say that they cannot learn anything from that person or country.. that there is no redeeming value there, basically proclaiming condemnation.

Handled that “controversial statement” with class. Coming from a Mexican. Definitely meant as a compliment to black folks work ethic.

A decade ago working and living on a horse farm we were picking up round bales at a farm 30 minutes or so away and the owner/my boss was talking to the other farm owner who owned the farm we were getting hay at, and my boss commented to the other farm owner, regarding me: "Yeah, he's a white boy that works like a Mexican" - the ultimate compliment in the South.

Pj, again super great reaction!!! I think your Hip Hot back ground brings a great outside perspective to this genre. I believe, while different, the lyrices of Hip Hope and Country run the same course. First and foremost, both are POETS. They are artist of the written word. Their work brings us to a place of emotion, and reflection about life. The two genres look different, the sound is different, but they both bring us to a place of conscience, awareness, and are battles in life. We are all closer together than some want us to be. Thanks again, you style is on par !!!

The more I listen the clearer it becomes. We humans have an innate need to be heard, we want to express our fears insecurities, our joy and pain. Our creativity, our roots our families in what ever shape or form they come in. I listen because I respect and admire these wonderful and sometimes flawed individuals, who give us these timeless treasures. Peace!

    Also, "Please Come To Boston".

Other than the controversy. This man is a great song writer. He wrote for Other people more than himself. Believe it or not, A very popular song on RUclips, he wrote is Tennessee whiskey. And he actually was the first one to release it. Then George Jones had a hit with it.
Then years later Chris Stapleton. Changed the music to the song. And had a massive hit with it.

Very different man! Ive followed him for 30 years! He sings about stereotypes in music! Been misunderstood and considered racist from the word go! He considered himself a pimp in his younger days and identified with blacks more than whites. Very controversial but not racist at all!
