- The voice of the village in 4 parts.
Villagers from the small Croatian village of Gornje Bukovlje talk about the changes in the village over the past 40 years.
I) Selling cattle to buy tractors
II) Growing food and raising livestock
III) Growing hemp and weaving
IV) Taking the cattle to pasture and singing

very close to nature, its the purest village life in seen in recent past. everything abt this village is beautiful and earthy.
Indeed, but since this film was made even more of the village has been lost and passed into history. Thanks for watching.
@@andrewnorris2 thank you for your reply. That's sad to know that things are changing so rapidly and the old village is slowly fading away into the past.
Gosh, such hard working people. Home grown at it's finest, and there's always time for a little music and laughter. I love the 'old way of life'. Beautiful sheep; The one dancing up the road did make me laugh :) Beautiful country, amazing people with such skills
There is, indeed, something satisfying to come home at the end of the day feeling physically tired from being outside in nature, with the animals of just working in the garden. Thanks for watching this one, it is one of my favourites.
I am sure it was a life full of happy neighbors all working and singing together and romance was also remembered. Many happy people died from those times and the young and pretty are now old thinking how it was and fast their life went. It is sad, but life continues and we cry and then we die and then others may have remembered and then there is NO MORE forever......Carl M -----You may use my feelings and publish what I said as your own feelings and life and past memories of long forgotten..............God Bless.
Thanks for watching and commenting, Carl, I appreciate it.
wow green and clean village. no garbage at all
Beautiful countryside. Very hard working and honest people. I’m sure they know their neighbors and keep in touch. And they help each other. My biggest respect.
Thank you for your comment. Yes, it is hard work but honest work and it is always good to be close to nature.
6 years later and your video is still being appreciated and enjoyed.
I know. Somehow RUclips reoommended it and now it has thousands of views. Its still a film I'm still moved by. Thanks for watching and commenting.
I love this Village very much. May long this Village!
Brings back memories of my grandma and grandpa in Europe.
So glad this film resonated with you. There are many films in this series that might also bring back Good memories for you. Thanks for watching.
Good air, sunshine, farm animals, agricultural work... ¡a fine life!
Hello
Thanks for this video. Remind me of my times in Vodena draga. Times that never will come back. I am still greatful that i could live this life every summer.
Indeed, the village is changing beyond recognition. I'm pleased that you still have a connection with the old ways.
Thank you Andrew for pointing me in the direction of this amazing little documentary. What an amazing place and history. I believe this is where true happiness is found.
It was a mixed blessing, I imagine. Certainly, people were much closer, they had to be when they shared various jobs, but the work was much harder. However, people grew up doing hard work so that was simply their life. The younger generation today have no idea what hard work is, and I suspect they are less happy!
@@andrewnorris2 yes l totally agree.
..simple but healthier life then..no hassles..no complications..people are friendly..neighbors shared whatever food they cook...
Very true. We lost a lot of valuable things with development of modern civilisation. Love from India.
These Croats seem to be blessed, given their past of conflicts a few years ago. Living in harmony with nature and animals, this is real life
Thanks, Martin, you are right it is real life but it is a hard life but there is something satisfying about coming home tired after being in the fields all day
Tradução: Esses croatas parecem ser abençoados, dado seu passado de conflitos há alguns anos atrás. Viver em harmonia com a natureza e os animais, esta é a vida real
This is the same in Romania. But I would say it is more widespread in Romania
I agree, especially in southern and eastern Europe. Sadly, there is no more ploughing with horses in this part of the world. Thanks for watching.
Beautiful
It is very familiar to my youth growing up in ireland.thank you for making this lovley filim
This film in particular has touched many people simply because it reflects their experiences. I am really pleased that it has reached you in Ireland and I appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment.
I'm not sure how many times I've watched this video. I love this🌻🌾🌷❤❤❤
It is one of my favourites. Also the one previous, number 59 'The Sound of the Village.' Thanks for watching again....and again!
Какой фильм хороший ! Спасибо кто снимал 👍👍Привет из России!
REminds me of my grandparents farm back in POland.
I don't doubt that. Farming methods have been honed over many centuries of trial and error and the sharing of best practices. So pleased that this film brought back some good memories for you.
Bence . Dunyanin en guzel insalari ve dogasi . Romanyadir. Sizleri ve ulkenizi cok seviyorum. ❤❤💙💜💛🧡
One could live like this, with nature, indefinitely. Perfect balance. My grandparents lived off the land too. I always helped during Summer school vacations. That's how I learned to appreciate hard work and its rewards.
Hard work never killed anyone.

A great film and a great historical document for the future Andrew. I remember people like this in my mother's country Ireland. People were not so different years ago, their quality of life was better because they relied on each other.
Not only relied on each other but there was an institution here during socialism called a 'zadruga' where families held land and livestock in common. While the zadruga officially no longer exists land here is still tied up in this manner. Thanks for watching this film, Michael, I'm very pleased with it and it was intended to be my 'final' word on the village but events intervened and I made another 18 films in the series! But these stopped at number 78, The last bee keeper in the village, after one of my dearest friends died and so his was the final film in that series.
@@andrewnorris2 sorry to hear about the death of your friend. I remember the village where my grandmother lived she was called out to help birth babies and even to lay out the dead and wash them. The circle of life was an everyday thing to people like her. They had hard lives but valued people more.
I will work my way through your films. Thanks again they are very well made and a pleasure to watch.
@@michaelwhite8031 Yes, Drago's loss was a great blow for me. You are right, death is just one aspect of village life. It took me a while to realise why and how people here are somewhat stoical when people die, precisely for the reasons you gave. I appreciate you wanting to go through my catalogue. Thanks, Michael
Truly Enjoying watching countryside of Croatia, its just phenomenal.
Great film
Really nice, wonderful pollution free, natural life of villagers. Good bye.
Beautiful country. Keep the old spirit alive. Greetings from Romania.
Thank you so much.
Thank you. I miss the old ways too, having experienced some here in Oregon and later, in Montana.
Thank you for watching. I am glad my video brought back some memories for you. It was certainly hard work but it was honest work and to come home tired at the end of the day gives one a sense of satisfaction of a job well done.
@@andrewnorris2 i really love ur videos too. I was remember my old days. No electricity no gadgets. My father is a farmer also.,
@@ramonamallo1991 You are very kind. A farmer's life is an honest one. We need our farmers!
@@andrewnorris2 I agree! My father planted rice and I help also. Untill now still really existed
It will all come and go....and come again. Modern day life whas doomed to fail the moment it started.
This was a beautiful video of a way of life that unfortunately has been lost.
Sadly, yes, it is being lost and the younger generation know little of how their grandparents lived. Thanks for watching.
Not really. In western Europe I guess, but in Balkans it still is this way. Especially Romania and Moldova. But in the future who knows...
Just put this on my list of places I wish to vist. Listing my home in So. Calif. on the market in two weeks. I want to simplify my life and I would enjoy spending time in a village like this. European cultures must be respected and preserved. Just a better way of life.
Really great incredible place familys piece full video super ❤️🙏👍
Thank you 🤗
truly lovely countryside.
I loved this. You really felt like you knew these people. Thank you.
Amazing I cannot explain this nature way of ploughing when was child my father and uncle use this method but they died but we was use bulls those are beautiful memories of my life bundles of thanks for showing this
Thank you,Naila!
Country living much better than city living. ✌
Спасибо за ответ и подсказку!Удачи вам и здоровья!
Нет проблем, но меня всегда удивляет, что люди не видят, что это Хорватия. В любом случае, спасибо за просмотр и комментарии.
I am Montagnard jarai tribe love the way you live eating healthy food
Hello Jacobe, only just found your comment, sorry for my delay but thanks for watching.
I have come late to this beautiful video. I found it very moving. Health , simple lives. Enjoying hard work and not wanting for anything else until 'progress' speeded up
I was really satisfied with this film, to let the friends I had made simply speak for themselves and from them I learnt so much to enable me to get closer to nature and the land. As one lady said to me when refering to working in the field, 'That was my faculty.' There is a lot to be said for practical work! Thanks for watching this one, Linda, this film means a lot to me.
Love so much thank you.
We don’t sing together anymore, it got lost once recordings, radio and computers came along, and once people didn’t hang out together outside working. I hope we bring it back someday.
You are right. I recorded quite a number of village songs but these were all sung by the older villagers, and most of them have died now. Thanks for watching
I really appreciate this video it's very humbling to watch, also really good to learn how life was before the mechanical engineering took over ,when life was holsom
Very professionally shot, edited and scored.
Beautifully done.
Beautiful place from London

good video. the atmosphere of village life is felt through taking precise and detailed angles, and musical instruments that support the atmosphere. thank you for presenting an interesting spectacle and add insight
Thanks for a kind and generous comment, I'm so pleased you enjoyed this film. If you are interested in village life and customs there are oer 100 films on this channel.
Чудесный ролик,показывающий и природу и быт румынских крестьян ,но хотелось бы,чтобы субтиры были на румынском языке.Vielen Danke scho"n!

No cattle ..no manure !..Mind you pigs were never kept well in many places in those days it seems..still are not...The rest is brilliant...the women talking about the crops..the shearing...embroidery/ weaving ..vintage knowledge beautifully filmed Andrew..excellent.
Was the white pellets artificial fertilizer on the ground when they were planting potatoes?
Very nice.
Thank you for watching.
This is so great!!!
We must preserve and respect this!
Thanks, Emir, please share with anyone you think might be interested.
andrewnorris2 We must meet!! what about wolfs and bears!
IN NATURE!
Yes, wolves and bears would be interesting to film especially if they came to Bukovlje. Maybe you would be interested to see this film, 'The Wolfman -The Diary of Paul Balenovic (BBC documentary)' There are some stunning views of the Velebit mountains.
Best

When I will retired from work i will go home to my village. For sure i have an enough money for capital and I will re alived my village from raising cattles like cows, carabao, native pigs, chickens, fishes, vegetables and fruits. I will invite everybody to come at my farm and have a party and to see what i have done that they have almost forgotten because their brain was already dig on their Smartphones fb and games. I want to eat organic, live longer and make a lot of money of it. I ll show them how to enjoy real life is.
Lovely hard work
Indeed, from a time when people were not afraid of hard work. Thanks for watching.
Good movie! Thank you!

Thank you so much for taking the time to watch and trouble to write. All the best to you, Andrew
Enjoyed the bits about agriculture... selling horse to buy a tractor and ending up with no manure for fertility and organic matter etc Also the tractor ending up being harder work unless your land was flat, contained no holes and little stones.
Thanks, Andrew, for watching and commenting.
très beau documentaire , avec de beaux personnages qui nous montrent la dureté de la vie !!!!

This was the best time to do something for family now we are doing work for govt. or big companies,
It is still possible to put politics behind you and find a small piece of the planet to live in harmony with nature, as much as one can. Thanks for watching.
Very healthy food and life back then. All this chemical mess is causing many problems for our bodies.
Country life is actually pretty good
Sensacional o documentário

Very nice and informative video..
Bilo je ljepo vidit ovo.
Super, gut dargestellt, was autakes landwirtschaftliches Leben ist! Nachhaltigkeit und Familienzusammenhalt!
nice place nice vid superb!!!!dream place😍
Nostalgic, full of love for mother nature, it's very much identical to our culture, your love for bovine/cows is very much respectable, we too love and respect our cows very much, indeed regard her as our mother. how much mechanical/technical progess we ever acquire, but mankind can never bypass mother nature, we can't consume synthetic foodstuffs, lots of ❤️❤️❤️ for the narrator grandma.
You are right. We should venerate Mother Nature and all her creatures. Mechanisation serves a useful function but it distances ourselves from having contact with the natural world around us. Fresh foods from the garden is what we need not, as you rightly say, synthetic foodstuffs. We are poisoning ourselves and the planet. Cows are just such fabulous creatures. Thanks for watching and commenting, Manoj.
Nice

Parabéns pelo vídeo!
Life like a beautiful dream
A dream, yes, but hard work nevertheless!
Bravo, Andrew for integrating voices, beautiful images, deftly varied angles and shots into such a moving and compelling whole. You have honored the details of a way of life: the plowed field, the shorn sheep, the soaking hemp, the animal husbandry. I am grateful for these four years of insight into the village. I feel the melancholy of irrevocable change and have been touched and fascinated by your village neighbors and friends. With warmth and respect, I thank you.

true life
KRAJ - indeed! A vivid and moving testament to the riches of the old, labour-intensive village life. Beautifully realized and the whole four-part finale is of course epic in dimension. It is the same kind of story everywhere. People are lured into consumer oriented modernity in a double whammy: seduced into avoiding the hard work of the centuries old traditions without realizing the deeper cost as they fall for notions of progress and inevitably as the land does not sustain the materialist dream sooner or later are drawn to the cities. Then what? Only a generation later they look back to the countryside for what? - a second-home, a weekend retreat. With little motive else but to do a little light gardening and put their feet up. What else as they have lost both the knowledge and the facility to work with the land.
A glorious and meaningful final episode Andrew. And I salute your own intensive, meticulous, creative achievement over the whole Sixty! What touched me deeply here, in a moment, was expressed simply thus - 'It's nice when you have something to offer people!' And you have done that too my dear friend! Bravo!
KRAJ you have expressed your thoughts with a commanding ability of the English language and put a lot of feeling and expression into your summery of the changes in every culture as new technology and methods change life as known to you in the generations gone before, it was a very moving to read even for one not to familiar with the village life you described above.
Butiful village.
Wow! This video is an accurate description of daily struggles of these people to get one's bread on the table. They work in the sun, heat, cold, rain, and wind to make their ends meet so as to fulfill the hunger of the rest. And look us we cry over small things.. Like oh its started raining, the tire got punctured, and so on..
Where that rice came from.. Did we ever ask .
Thanks for making this..
You are right. We are all troubled by trivial things these days. The people here that I have filmed for 10 years had to struggle to just put food on the table but you know what? Most of them would say they were happier back then! Thanks for watching and commenting, I appreciate it.
@@andrewnorris2 Yes, they all looks happy as well as healthy. They are constantly in touch with nature and people around them. Today our people always licking on phones that they don't even gather outside for fun in evenings, as result they also has less connection in the families and relatives.
Thanks
