One virtue of half frame cameras is at times seen as a defect: grain and other film artifacts are amplified. While these may seem only incidental effects, they give an authenticity to film images, especially where they are prominent. They tend to indicate the image hasn't been tampered with and it represents a fair depiction of a reality, at least to the casual viewer. Curiously, they can also indicate the passage of time because the older technology shows in the image. We know this but discussions about half-frame cameras seem to center around their limitations, although the cameras are capable of producing virtually unique images.

Lovely video and camera. One secret trick that the Pen F series can do is adapting a LOT of lenses from various systems (even some digital systems like EOS) due to its small flange focal distance, especially for an SLR.
Olympus even made official adapters for various systems like OM, Nikon F, Exakta, etc, sadly they're super expensive nowadays. Some 3rd party manufacturer made a Canon EOS adapter, that you can use as is with an EOS lens (note that it doesn't have electronic contacts) or stack with other adapters, essentially making it super versatile. I want to try adapting my OM Zuiko 50mm one day, see if it brings a whole another level of half frame rendering.

Love my pen ft chrome which I got for my double your anniversary last year. 25-150mm lenses, X3 and set of close up adaptor rings, it is a complete system in a shoulder bag. For film I used the Adox HR-50 which is extremely fine grain and allows me to print in th darkroom up to 12x16" without a problem. All of the Olympus zuiko glass is extremely high quality and more than makes up for the 18x24 negative. This is my carry around camera and is great for scouting new locations.
    Great review, many thanks. P.

I've been shooting on a Pen FT for 10+ years. Love the thing and recently got the light meter working (corroded wire.) I recently picked up a Fuji X-E4 and it combos really well with my Pen F lenses and really feels like the digital version of this camera.

    • @LucyLumen

That's awesome, the metre works in mine but to be honest I don't trust it and tend to just use Sunny 16 rule.

    • @benbunch4159
      @benbunch4159 Год назад

@@LucyLumen yeah I have shot many rolls on it sunny 16 and will probably continue to do so.
I also have the Bellows for it which are pretty compact for bellows and fun to shoot macro with.
Honestly the biggest downside of the Pen F for me is the 1/500th fastest shutter speed makes it hard to get shallow focus during the day. I've tried ND filters but it tends to make exposure more difficult and its easy to lose sharpness with filters and half frame film.

Great overview. I have about 12 half frame cameras and love them all. From the tiny Olympus Pen D3, to the motorized Ansco/Ricoh Memo, to the Konica Eye 2, to the Konica Auto-Reflex and even the Mercury II rotary shutter camera. The most interesting is the Konica Auto-Reflex, since it will shoot both half frame and full frame on the same roll, with the flip of a switch (but a nightmare for the lab when scanning). I also have a Konica IIIM with the incredibly rare half frame mask. Also 2 Pen F's, and a Pen FV (which is my favorite of all). I sold my black FT, because I didn't need the primitive meter, and the meter made the viewfinder too dim. Enjoy yours!

Great video! I have a Pen F with the kit lens but also a couple adapters for Canon and Nikon lenses. While they are nice, the larger glass does look ungainly but the results are very good. I found that film selection is more critical with half frame. The smaller camera is harder to hold still and in the case of the Pen F, the shutter/mirror does contribute to some shake. I also found it hard to have the same shooting experience as full frame because of the larger number of images per roll. As a result, I started to think of the camera as a companion every time I go out whether I am shooting film or not. Eventually, I get them all shot. Strangely, even though I have many other film cameras, far more of these half frame images end up as prints on my wall than the full frame ones.

If anyone else ends up with an Olympus Pen F that needs some TLC, I recently spent several hours calling every camera repair shop I could find in the US. Its rare that anyone still in business offers service on the Pen F. :(
But I did find four solid leads:
Forster's Camera Service, Salt Lake City Utah
    Eurotech Camera, Austin Texas
    Northwest Camera, Lindstrom Minnesota
    Excellent Photo Repair, Lincolnwood Illinois
I think if I include URLs here then RUclips will assume I'm spamming. But dropping any of those lines into your favorite search engine should get you there.

I was lucky enough to pick up a mint 1960s Olympus Pen EE half frame camera for £15.
I'm always looking out for more half frame models, there were some really quirky Japanese market models.
Thankfully there are some modern alternatives such as the Kodak Ektar H35 to keep the genre alive.👍

Lower ISO is going to be my go-to half-frame move - I mostly shoot outdoors in daylight so this is doable. My PEN FT will be my default colour shooter for a while (until the film savings pay off the cost of the camera). I'm by default a landscape orientation shooter but even before shooting with it I started looking at the main street in town and seeing compositions in portrait orientation so I'm really looking forward to it as an opportunity to see the same places and subjects a little differently.

I’ve just finished shooting my first roll on my Yashica Samurai, (a roll of Vision3 500T) trying to get my Konica Eye 2 up and running so I can get some more manual control over my exposures. Down the line considering a Pen F too.
The Samurai is a lot of fun though, always gets lots of questions.
Also on the topic of half-frame not costing extra, the film labs that are my regular go-tos in Melbourne (Ikigai is too far out of the way for me, otherwise I’d just be going there) both seem to charge at least slightly extra for film scanning in half-frame, and one charges QUITE a significant amount extra for half-frame prints. Getting my single roll of Vision3 developed at my usual lab would end up costing me upwards of $50 with prints + scans, and would still be upwards of $40 without the cost of the RemJet removal.

that's one of my bigger gripes about shooting half frame, getting through 72 frames unless you're doing it for a job and burning film in a studio, or whatever, is grueling. I slapped a roll of 50D in my half frame camera and I'm not gonna lie, it's a chug.... chuggity chug.... I would recommend in future maybe getting a roll of something like Kodak Gold in 100 speed in a 24roll can. Half-frame is essentially the same size and aspect-ratio as APS-C, so is absolutely fine, exactly as shown by Lucy Lumen in this video. For a perfect lens, the optical resolution using visible light where the wavelength λ = 0.55 µm, at the sensor or film focal plane, expressed in µm, is, very approximately 4f/3, where f is the focal ratio or f-stop used for the exposure.

and Lucy, one other reason for asking the lab, is that some fujifilm, or other makes of machine can only process certain size film, or only C41 process (slide{transperancy}film is E6 chemistry, as different layers are present in the emulsion mix, so have to be sequentially processed, fixed, to completion, and some film, like LF sheet stock has an anti-halation layer, to stop light re-strike inside the holders, this also has to be removed (affects the PH of the rest of the processing chemistry)), and even B&W has to be 'hand' processed in tanks, as the machine can't take it; so is best to ask, before you load the stock, as some labs in local areas can't process slides, or 120, depending on demand, cost of machine and chemistry/ consumables, so be wary.

The more analogous crop factor is it being about the same size as motion picture 35mm stock, so 35mm stock with the magnetic/optical sound strip printed on the film. If you think about it like that you start to realise half frame isn't very small at all.

one tip, also if you are after a 1/2 frame camera why not try a rollei 2000f/3000 I think they have a 1/2 frame capacity?, but am not sure, one thing I am sure, there was an 8-on option for the Hasselblad H system (HM 16-32) a film back which took 120, but I think there was a 1/2 frame stock it could take.

I would be a little concerned that when asking for diptych scans the lab would not know for sure which exposures to pair up (i.e.: 1A + 1B, or 1B + 2A) -- I guess if you always shoot diptychs starting with the first shot, and tell the lab to start with the first two exposures. I prefer to get each image scanned separately and assemble them myself -- as you said, you have more control over post processing *per* image that way. But I don't have an amazing half-frame camera like you!!!! 😢😢😢😢😢 I have the Kodak H35 and the One Shot half-frame (same as the AgfaPhoto half-frame). Half-frame is also the same size as the frames on 35 mm movie cameras; the film is transported vertically instead of horizontally. Thus, as Lucy Lumen correctly observes, half-frame fim is actually quite good, especially for slower, fine-grained stock. 25 years ago you could buy some of the best half frame cameras for five bucks a pound. Today, most of the ones from the mid-60s on now are selling used for far more than they cost new (not adjusted for inflation). Olympus really started it in the early 1960s, because it was not making it in competition with the big producers, and it needed a new gig to stay in the game, Thus, the Olympus Pen series of half frame cameras -decent to good lenses, crudely designed under the skin. Today, most of them are broken, but they sold huge numbers, so still not hard to find. Canon made a couple of over engineered models - solid, durable, fantastic lenses. MInolta made a few, better quality than Oly, good (not great) lenses. Konica made a couple of clever models (her Reporter is just cool and a terrific design, but very not durable); Konica also adapted one or two of its full sized 35mm SLRs to be full/half frame convertible. Pentax and Nikon chose not to play. Biggest problem generically: The powered meters in all are from the era of mercury batteries, and some of the best cameras are auto exposure only - a problem. Most of the Oly models use selenium cells - a different problem. Half frame was a lot more interesting when you could buy them for $25 each instead of $150 - $400. Her Pen FT half frame SLR looks great at first glance, but my experience was that as a camera system with interchangeable lenses, it is a continuing disappointment, which caused me to resell my body, four lenses and some accessories in less than a year. "Why" is the worth another video.

    @roumelio Год назад

I mean firstly, it's not much of a con, half frame is the same size as 35mm motion picture film without the magnetic/optical sound strip.... You're still going to get a good sized image. Even if, whatever, secondly lets say you get a 4000dpi scan, you'd be getting the equivalent of an 8x10 (rather than a 16x10) in a scan. The resolution is enough, the image quality is enough. There will just be a bit more grain.
Now, if you sent it off to a lab that could scan a bit higher resolution, and cover the dots, there are a few labs that have a Haselblad/Imacon scanner available that will develop a bit more resolution. Your problem is that the resolution may not be available always as it's limited by whatever the film stock is available. Don't expect miracles if you shove a roll of 800T in your camera. If you do shoot half frames, then it's worth considering cutting your ISO in half, so instead of using 100 ISO use 50 ISO film instead, or on the other end try using a 400 stock such as Portra 400 instead of Portra 800, or Vision 3 250D instead of 500T (AKA Cinestill 400, vs 800).
There are even some 25 speed black and white films out there.
The point is if you double the amount of available light, and factor in for the smaller frame size then you're still going to get some good results. It's just a matter of making the factors that would otherwise lead to worse image quality for you rather than against you.
As to Hexanon glass, its some of the best in the world, that's why I use it regularly in a lot of my shots over on my Instagram channel. Not only is Konica glass, on the average, cheaper, their later lenses from 1979 onwards were actually assembled by Tokina using glass from Leica, on the AR mount, which is why it's worth getting a Konica AR mount camera and checking out some of their glass.
But then the Sony/Zeiss A mount lenses are on another level.

Your lab seems to be fantastic. Unfortunately not an option for people, not living in Australia. 🤷🏼‍♂️ But … I also noticed ( talking about half frame ), that it’s not so much the scan quality that sucks, but the grain. I recently used an Adox Color Mission 200 and the results were quite grainy and terrible. 🥴 So, yeah, it might work with pretty expensive low ISO pro films but that raises the question, if it’s really cost saving then. 🤔
Another aspect of half frame is … it takes forever to finish one roll. 36 frames are about the best compromise for me there.

    • @roumelio
      @roumelio Год назад +2

Try using Vision 3 50D (AKA Cinestill 100D). I worked with Micro Four Thirds in digital for a long time, it taught me a lot as Micro Four Thirds is give or take the same frame size as APS film. When you use a lower ISO film, and faster lenses, aka F/1.8 and faster if you can get away with it, you give yourself more opportunities to let more light in on the film frame. Higher ISO films are going to be challenge.
But also living in Australia, what the hell is 200 speed film? We don't really need it as there is always so much available light. I can understand if you're basically living underneath the shadow of a rock, in the UK you might want to use 200 speed film more often as 50 speed film is more limiting (aka middle of the day only) but I digress at that point. You would also have to understand that most of these half frame cameras came out originally in the 1960s, and were made when Kodachrome 25 and Kodachrome 64 were still available.
God how I wish we still had a colour 25speed film available.... Praise the Kodak lords that they didn't delete Vision 3 50D at least.

@@roumelio I agree with you and I am actually a huge fan of low speed films myself. Still … if I look at the prices of those half frame cameras if wanting a still working model with a fast lens … I still doubt the immense cost savings of using half frame … and that’s really the only argument for using that format for me. Otherwise Full Format simply brings the double quality and I also prefer 36 shots per roll … but that is a matter of the personal shooting style. I take the most photos with my cellphone, just using film for shots, which I consider „worthy“ for using film. And then, I want some quality. I even see 35 mm just as a compromise. Medium format looks so much better to be honest … if film wouldn’t be that expensive.

@@BerndtOtto I ended up buying a Konica Autoreflex (the original one) with a 52mm F/1.8 lens. So far it’s cost me about $500 for this little experiment.
There are a lot of cheap options, even the Kodak Ektar half frame camera as Lucy mentioned can take good shots in its limitations…
But my Konica Autoreflex is an example of a professional level 1/1000 shutter speed camera anyone can still afford at around $300-$500. It’s more the whether you want to kind of argument.
It seems like a lot of effort, but if we talked about everything being an effort nobody would do anything.
I hear exactly what you’re saying I’m just presenting an alternate argument.

@@roumelio The Kodak Ektar H35 plastic camera was the one, I used. Most shots surprisingly ( or actually not surprisingly ) overexposed, even at ISO 200. I am sure, it will work even better with ISO 100. At a shutter speed of 1/100sec, the sunny 16 rule even recommends F16@ISO100 and the camera only does F9.5, I believe. I mostly use film on sunny days, simply because I think, the colors turn out best then. ☀️
About your budget … $500 is already something, but here, the personal limits might differ from person to person. I own more than 100 film cameras ( not half frame though ) and none of them is in that price range. Just recently bought a wonderful original Canonet from 1961 and a few 90s SLRs for about $20-$30 each. That is more MY world … hahaha …

@@BerndtOtto don’t get me wrong, I enjoy a person who enjoys using old Canonets. I like looking at them and enjoy the historical side of things. I just don’t use them much as the limitations hurt my head especially the slow/no shutter speed and also the lack of aperture control.
Although, like you said the Ektar is a good camera, I thought it was F/8 but it may be F/9.5 and he’s the Sunny 16 rule comes into effect which would be indicative that an ISO100 film would give you a better chance at good results.
Maybe in North America or Europe that might be more of a summer type of option. I’m in Australia like Lucy so we have the luxury of using 100 or even 50 speed films.
I can’t imagine being in the middle of Europe and shooting Ektar 100 would always be the best option.
If you want some options for cheap 90s SLRs I highly recommend Minolta especially something like the Maxxum/Dynax/Alpha 5 (all the same camera) Minolta A mount glass is ridiculously cheap especially their mid range lenses (not so much their pro lenses).

Ah I’m sorry to hear that. A way to help prevent this is to keep a dud roll of film that you use to test cameras. You can load it and then open the back and check everything is working then don’t rewind it all the way back in so you can test other cameras. You can also see if the film is advancing because the winder will turn the same time you use the advance lever. If you’re advancing the lever and the rewind lever isn’t turning the film isn’t advancing.
