- The rugged 2019 Honda Passport and sporty 2019 Chevrolet Blazer are two new intriguing SUVs that seem ripe for people looking for fun vehicles but have expanded passenger and cargo needs. Video hosts Alistair Weaver and Jonathan Elfalan have both recently become new dads and seek to determine which one is the better pick.
If there's anything the Blazer does well, it's make a style statement. Chevy adapted the aggressive muscle-car styling of its Camaro to a midsize family SUV, which makes the Blazer look sportier than anything in the class. The Blazer's interior is less impressive, plagued with design compromises that have functional drawbacks and obvious cost-reduction measures in the wrong places. And the price of our tester was steep, at over $50K.
The Passport doesn't share the exterior panache of the Blazer, but its cabin feels leagues better, both in quality and use of space. And although the Blazer could outpace the Passport by a small margin on most roads, the driving experience in the Passport is simply superior. With more space, more driving engagement, a smarter design, and more features for the money, the Honda Passport is not only a landslide favorite but also our top-ranked midsize SUV.
2019 Chevrolet Blazer Review
The 2019 Chevy Blazer is an all-new vehicle, but it's been around in several forms, dating back to the 1960s. In its most iconic form, it was a two-door SUV with a removable top. For 2019, the Blazer morphs into a five-seat crossover SUV that fills a gap in Chevy's lineup between the smaller Equinox and the three-row Traverse.
The new Blazer comes standard with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine good for 193 horsepower. It's an underwhelming mill for this size of SUV, so we'd go with the optional 3.6-liter V6. It puts out more than 300 hp and is capable of towing up to 4,500 pounds. On the inside, the Blazer offers a long list of available equipment such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, along with desirable safety features such as adaptive cruise control and forward collision mitigation.
The 2019 Blazer is available in four trim levels: L, Blazer (also called the LT), RS, and Premier. The L trim level is the base model, with a decent amount of standard equipment, including a few key tech items. You're more likely to find the next-level Blazer trim on dealer lots, however, and it comes in three subtrims: 2.5L Cloth, 3.6L Cloth and 3.6L Leather. They offer increasing amounts of safety equipment plus the upgraded engine. The Chevy Blazer RS has a sporty look with some unique exterior details, while the Premier is the most luxurious.

2019 Honda Passport Review
The all-new Passport is a shorter and taller Honda Pilot, which is certainly a good place to start. The Pilot is one of our favorite three-row crossover SUVs. Because it's shorter, the Passport doesn't have a third-row seat as the Pilot does. Instead, it dedicates more interior space to its second-row passengers. Honda also made the Passport a little more off-road capable thanks to a higher ground clearance and better approach and departure angles.
Under the hood, the 2019 Honda Passport gets the same V6 engine and nine-speed automatic transmission that the Pilot uses. That V6 gives it 5,000 pounds of towing capability and strong unladen acceleration. We've been critical of the Pilot's nine-speed automatic in the past for clunky shifts. But with the Passport, Honda has seemed to have solved most of those issues.
The Passport is available in four trim levels: Sport, EX-L, Touring, and Elite. Every Passport comes with Honda's 3.5-liter V6 (280 hp, 262 lb-ft of torque) and a nine-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard on the Sport, EX-L and Touring. All-wheel drive is standard on the Elite and optional on the other three trim levels.
The topped-out Honda Passport Elite is certainly the most desirable trim level with its ventilated seats and LED interior lighting, but we recommend most buyers look at the midlevel EX-L first. The EX-L offers all the standard safety equipment of the base Sport trim plus extras such as blind-spot monitoring and heated front seats. The EX-L also gets the Passport's larger 8-inch center screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility.

$50k for the Blazer is absolutely laughable. Granted prices of cars just keep increasing. But for that money There are tons of better options available.

Buying my 2020 Blazer RS for only 37k with cargo package, and drivers assistance. Brand new. so they deffinently listened to customers and cut down the price by a lot.

If Honda's timing chain issue in the 3.5 V6 gets worked out, I wouldn't mind trading my 2004 Grand Cherokee on a used one couple years down the line. I tend to keep cars for a long time, and although I love my Grand Cherokee, it's on it's second engine, and almost needs another transmission (15 years old, just hit 120,000 miles of mostly city driving). My money might go to a Highlander.

I just test drove a blazer RS... it was actually quite fun in almost a comical or “Mini” way... looked funky inside and out and drove “sporty.” But in no way is this a better buy than much of its competition. The Blazer suits a niche market of a GM fan boy or someone who wants to be different. Having said that, most reviews of the Blazer are actually quite better than this one.
I love how they downplay that the Blazer is more sporty than the Passport, saying "no SUV is a sports car." Then they compare it to the luxury market, and end that the CX-5 is one SUV that handles better. They don't even bother to test the track times because that would show it substantially faster. The two cars serve different markets - plain and simple.

I knew before watching the passport would win. Reviewers, editors, critics, etc have worshipped Honda for decades. I agree on the price tag of the blazer it’s outrageous. But, the lower end trims, like the base, are actually very nice and give them a year or two and they’ll shuffle options and make price adjustments just like any other car company does to meet consumer needs.
people act like the competition is WAY cheaper. A murano tops out at $46k and the edge tops out at $48k with the base engine. No one is paying $50k for a blazer, there is already 2k rebate and you can get them for 2k under MSRP. So basically only a couple grand over the loaded pilot for a vehicle with more features.

...with no options ...if you actually visit a Lexus dealership, an RX is $53-60K all day. So, yes, as has been true forever, comparing a loaded cheaper brand to a base luxury brand, the price is similar.

Ugh, I’d rather not have a Lexus at all because they’re all so ugly... but for $50K I’d rather have an Acura RDX thats fully loaded and still have $4K leftover in my pocket. Or, I’d rather just have a Tesla Model 3 Long Range AWD. Lexus, no. Anything else, yes.

Lexus loses it value just like any other luxury vehicle. So I wouldn't believe the wive's tale about Lexus holding their value. Residual values are set by the banks and the food chain of auction and dealerships just play along to make as much money as they can out the consumers.

low beltline and large glass windows is a feature i hope all suvs go back to like the mid 90’s - makes the suvs look so cool - no one wants to sit in a bunker with no outward visibility.
A bunch of SUV's are like caves with no visibility. It's just unfortunate.
@@Spiderfang-pu2zr What makes it even worse is that the seats are sitting too low and the hood and dashboard is too high. I have a big 2007 Ford Econoline high top conversion van and I love it to death. Plenty of room and easy to see out of. It's about 8 feet tall and I can stand up and walk around inside it. The thing I like most about high top conversion vans is how the back seat folds out into a sofa bed.

Okay so this is my thought. Yes, the passport is a great vehicle, it has a lot of options and it looks nice. But I recently bought a Blazer RS and I absolutely adore it. I can admit, it was very pricey, more than what an SUV of that standards. But either way it's great. I wish they had the option for the 6.2L V8 engine considering the engine bay appears to have the room for it. None the less, I digress. I love the way it looks, it has a sporty look which makes me feel very happy when I sit inside it. I can't tell you how many head turns I've gotten with that car. When I was sitting in a parking lot once, a couple turned and looked at the Blazer and smiled and walked away. Another man gave me the thumbs up and smiled at me through a drive through. Yes it has flaws, but they can easily be brushed under the rug once you get in it and drive it. But I can say that the passport is also an amazing vehicle. I just prefer the Blazer.
It's nice Chevy has the option of the RS for people like you, and me who prefer the sporty look. This review is pretty silly not comparing apples to apples. Their nit picking reminds me of trying to convince an Apple phone user to buy a Samsung. Both are great, but it's the interface you are use to as to what you are going to buy. If you want to be a boring soccer mom that likes vehicles that have little USB covers and that look like a brick with wheels, buy the Honda. If you like sporty looks and don't mind to spend the extra to get the RS package, buy the RS.

Wife and I just got the Passport. Its got more cargo space than the Blazer, and is a much better value. We were originally thinking we'd get the GMC Acadia but it just seems like GM products these days are overpriced for what you get. The Honda might be a little less stylish on the outside, but the overall package being slightly higher quality and for a bit less money makes it an easy win.

The new blazer looks tacky in the sport trim, cheap in the lower trims, and for the price of the car it offers way too little.
I like the look of the blazer the front end looks really aggressive and stands out, but for 50k I’ll pass
I have to say that to my eyes, the Passport interior is a huge letdown. The Accord interior is much nicer looking and feeling. That cheap shiny plastic trim is ugly AF. There’s nothing about the blazer that excites me and they’ve lost their mind with the pricing. A blazer can go for over $50,000. Give me a break. It looks like an entry level subcompact crossover from the outside.
Jonathan Losito the Blazer is priced insanely high. Hardly anyone is buying them, at least not in the large volumes GM hoped for. I can’t imagine anyone looking at one and thinking $50K seems like a reasonable price for the highest trim level.

I’ve seen 3 Blazers in the months since it was released. I feel bad for whoever got swindled at their Chevy dealer and actually bought one.
The passport should win. Take a look at the ex-l in modern steel, black interior. Add the weather tech wind deflectors and OEM rails, crossbars yourself and get the AWD model. Hands down a great suv. Take mine on logging roads with a load of hunting dogs on the weekends. I actually need the AWD and this model can do it along with a decent ride height. Should be an easy choice.
Chevy marketing must be high to price this thing thousands higher than a Honda Passport. Honda has a reputation for reliability with one of the best V6 engines in existence. Not to mention Honda’s material quality is so much better. Passport should top at 35k for it most loaded V6 to have a prayer. Even then I take Passport. Only things that let pPassport down are lack of shift level, and that nine speed transmission which I hope is better in this implementation.

I like the exterior lines of the Blazer more than the Passport....but that is about it. Easy decision between these two.
This video focuses greatly on comparing the sporty driving of the two cars. I moved to a AWD Passport from the last of the Acura Cl-S, 17 years old; on its last day it drove "sporty" and then some. Let me tell you - these SUVs are not sporty by any definitions which makes any sense. I don't know the Chev, but the Passport drives quickly and fairly precisely - good enough for me. It's a lot less work to drive an my old Acura, which at 74 I appreciate. If you want sporty, why are you looking at an SUV?
I'll stick with my 2006 pilot.

That's what happens when you write the review in advance from predetermined conclusions. This "review" is a like paid advert for Honda, but not surprising coming from Edmunds.
It's the only wholly negative review I've seen/read about the Blazer - though everyone slams it's cost, especially relative to the quality of the materials used in the interior. And the use of the Blazer name, of course.
@@ktpinnacle You could see where it was going when they complained the USB ports didn't have covers, and that the display screen didn't tilt. Of course Honda's doesn't either, but whatever. When they make claims that stuff in one vehicle seems thought out better without offering specifics, it becomes quite obvious.

I think realistically, the KIA Sorento and Mazda CX-9 are closer to these vehicles than other three row crossovers. If you disagree with that statement, I would invite you to sit in the third row of either of those vehicles for more than 20 minutes. So that being said, they are direct competition to these vehicles. Which means interior build quality and materials quality are being measured by those standards as well. Honda seemed to get the memo on that and Chevrolet did not.
We own a Honda pilot and we can attest that family convenience is top notch! I've owned and been in several Chevy products and I've always been left wanting. They just aren't fully baked. As they said here: designers and engineers weren't on the same page!!!! The Honda is the better product, it will be more reliable and in 5 years, it will be worth a lot more than the Chevy. At $50k, is expect the Blazer to have $10k on the hood by years end!

The blazer is nice looking and interior is pretty nice, but that price will need to come down. I still would stay with the passport for the family SUV and I am not a honda fan, so don't think I would take the popular choice. Just me without the family, I would go Blazer with a discounted price.

Also the blazer is $55k+ BMW price range and safety are optional still. The Honda is get however that 9 speed sucks. Mazda CX-5 turbo or Alfa Stelvio for handling and fun factor

Without question the Blazer RS is a much better handling cross over than any competitor. With 21" wheels, beefed up sport suspension, wider track, vector AWD and quicker steering ratio all others are really only baby haulers as these mom's proved.

@@ALMX5DP compared to CR-V ther Passport(Acura) and Blazer RS offer a rear torque vectoring AWD that can send 100% to the outside wheel during a turn. The GM Twin Clutch AWD can send 60% of torque rearward where the Passport can 70%. The blazer can send 100% torque to the a single wheel while the other three slip. This allows it to succeed on the three roller test with one wheel on the ground. Honda and Acura cannot do that.

Every other review of the blazer has been positive. Motor trend did the same comparo and the blazer won they said it was one the best driving suv so I don't get this review at all they was extra harsh and looking at that track part the Honda look like it was jump off the damn track haha

A better comparison to the Blazer would have been a Mazda CX 9. And you know who would easily win that comparison. That being said, I used to have a Honda Pilot for 3 years that was an excellent vehicle, zero problems. I'm sure the Passport is just as good. Chevy on the other hand, doesn't seem to make great mid or small SUVs anymore.

Instead of an honest comparison between the two vehicles we are given a nearly 30 minute overview of nearly everything they don't like about the Chevy and how they feel about how it in comparison to the Honda. The Chevy is only being measured to the Honda and not the other way round. Bias at its worst.

its funny because the blazer's tech is designed exactly how i would want it. i hate USB ports in the console and the charge pad is exactly where i put my phone in my car, but it could be worse. it could look as ugly as the passport

Let's see... No and oh hell No (on the blazer). Why are we doing this to ourselves? Why are we playing into the hands of the manufacturer whom now refuse to give great choices and alternatives and hamstring us in to these things. The Passport is mostly acceptable, the blazer is not.

Maybe the traverse (7 ppl class)...IF chevy (gm) could rebadge the buick tourx (opel insignia) as a chevy Nomad (or Malibu xl) that might be an acceptable platform to move 5 ppl and stuff and be available UNDER $40k. The big issue I have with ALL cuvs/suvs is their price or ridiculous options list.

Passport all day every day. It's better engineered, has a nice honest design inside and out, is more practical and user-friendly and gets the details right.

Just bought a new Passport here. Never considered the Chev Blazer in any form. Why? Because Chev and GM generally build poor quality products, apart from the crappy feature set and laughable price. I consider the Passsport to be overpriced, so the Blazer is just gross.

Chevy (and GM more broadly) _ALWAYS_ cheaps out on the trunk area (often the load floor is literally a piece of cardboard), under seat areas, seat rails, etc. You can literally _SEE_ the accountants screaming for each of the program managers to reduce another $0.03 per vehicle (yes, they actually care down to the penny) every time you open the trunk or hatch. SMDH.
Why would cargo area have soft touch or fabric lining? What sense does that make when you think about how the rear cargo area is abused?
@@shethjones4494 You're right. The cargo area should have cardboard floors and the crappiest hard plastic that gets scratched all to hell and looks like garbage after 1 month. If you really believe the material quality of this Chevy > Honda, then we're done. I _want_ to like this Chevy. I really do. But new GM is run using the same old GM garbage management priorities that ran the company into the ground in the 70s, 80s, 90s.

But what I can't abide is the abject penny-pinching cheapness of every GM trunk and boot. They _can_ do better (because most other manufacturers do)... but they _DON'T_ do better because they can save $1.00 per car.
@@alliejrI'll try to restate- the rear cargo area gets abused if you actually use your SUV and most non luxury models have durable hard plastics in the back. In fact, one reason I wouldn't get a real lux SUV is because many of them have flocked cargo area walls which are going to get dirty and require deep cleaning if you actually haul stuff. This is the reason you dont find soft touch materials in a pickup bed. Every GM boot? GEt real. THe trunks of actual GM cars are lined just like other cars. Just stop. List 2 GM cars that lack lined trunk areas......

For 50k, you can get a nicely-equipped 2020 Ford Explorer Limited that far exceeds the Blazer RS in every way imaginable. Or save a few thousand and get a loaded XLT. It's a much better value with better tech and more performance.
The Blazer competes with the Edge not the Explorer, but the Edge has some advantages over this, especially the ST
