  • Metro Manila, Philippines, is predicted to reach a housing shortage of around 1 million units by the year 2030. As more and more buildable spaces in the capital are diminished, Nightingale Manila tries explores alternative ways of housing design by re-imagining the existing infrastructure, the Philippine National Railway, and transforming it to provide housing units for the Filipino people currently living under extreme poverty.

I'm from the Philippines, and I'm amazed by your thesis. It is well-studied, and everything is perfect. I love how you deliver the story of Maria, and with that, I can feel the presence of the Filipino culture more. More power to you.

As a student of planning ....it is magnificent case to study and note down these concepts to tackle the universal problem stated in the video
And representation of this video is at another level ... hat's off to hard work.

This design of yours is astanoshing. As incoming 5th year arki student I'm very excited and nervous at the same time to take my first thesis in architecture but seeing your design boosted my confidence to keep forward. I love your concepts, aesthetics, design and plans. Keep up the good work!

I really like your approach to producing more housing units for the community with limited buildable space. It would be nice if we could see your work online, where deeper subjects were discussed like the sewerage system of these modular units or solutions for natural hazards like earthquakes. Hoping to see more of your works

I've seen the Nightingale 1 & 2 in videos, and I have a dream of building something similar here in Manila. Not in this scale though, which is amazing. I've seen the buildings along the railroads you've mentioned (along Osmeña?) and agree that it does need to be changed. I really hope your vision will be realized soon.

I'm also researching modular housing in Korea. In 2020, I published a report on '가족구성 변화를 고려한 가변형 모듈러 주택모델 연구(A Study on Variable Modular Housing Model Considering Family Life Cycle)' in Korea, and I was thinking about making a house with a modularized space that considers the production system. I'm late, but I'm glad to see a cinematic work with a nice scenario. I subscribed and look forward to your future works.

Hello Ar. Wu, I would like to ask a question about this thesis. I am an architecture student as well and will be taking my thesis next year. I have a question regarding the safety or the proximity between the modules in regards to social distancing and the COVID-19 pandemic. Did the panel ask any question similar to this? :) thank you

Sir, I'd like to express my gratitude on how you're passionate and love the Philippines through planning. This is undeniably beautiful vision and idea of yours, I hope the government will take consideration on this kind of project. Very interesting innovation, it's like "if you can't build a substation tunnel underground cos of the potential floods then why not create a tunnel on the ground while having mixed-use development on the vertical spaces"
I only have a question sir regarding the PWD's, BP 344, what approach did you use to solve this problem? Cos I really wonder how it's solved as it's a multi-storey structure. I'm really amazed by your thesis and I'd like to learn new innovations in the Philippines as I am an architecture student, I hope you'd notice this comment and consider my queries. More power!

Thanks so much for your kind words.
Yes I definitely thought about accessibility. There are 1:12 ramps throughout the structure for access that are spaced out on the hub clusters (stations) which I think I’ve failed to highlight/discuss during my presentation due to the time limit. As lifts/elevators are expensive I didn’t think it was feasible for this project.
But ultimately this thesis is a work-in-progress and definitely not the only solution and most definitely not perfect and in need of improvements and involvements from everyone from all sectors.
I am very confident though that with the right people, team and exposure, Nightingale Manila will become a reality one day. Sometimes all we need is to be inspired and to dream don’t you think? 😊

    • @kaip2998
      @kaip2998 Год назад

      @@HanWu It's my pleasure!
I see, that's good to know Sir, as lifts are really expensive plus the maintenance cost of it is unbearable to the target market.
And yea I do believe that these kind of inspirations are one of a good example to start solving national problems, there may be some holes in the idea, the important thing is we keep on discovering what it lacks and what it needs to be addressed.
Really appreciate your humble response. I can't wait for your projects to be considered or realized in the future, Sir.
      Thank you!

The idea is great, but it has lots of holes
    1. the space or the lot area for the project-, there’s no such space along the railroad that can accommodate a huge number of buildings, unless you demolished informal settlers living along the railway. It cannot be called a barangay unless you build 40 to 60 buildings connected to each other. It’s only a community. The structure is small to call a barangay, it may merely call a condo above a railroad. If that structure is too far away from each other the bike lane is nonsense.
    2. I think you wouldn’t study the location- the railway system is extremely loud and causes vibration, so you need to address it also.
    3. The danger of it- you put a community in a danger. do you have plans on securing those flatforms because any time of the day the train rails can be accessed
    4. It may cause huge traffic to the train- traveling with a train is convenient-but putting a huge number of stations will slow its downs. How will you manage that?
    5. The prefabricated structure is also expensive.
    6. The environment alongside the railroad’s something you don’t want to live in, a lot of air pollutants- and noisy roads; and crimes-how will you solve it?
    7. The structure of it is something that can’t stand it
    8. And if you wanted to connect it- how will you solve our climate and air circulation- it’s very hot in manila- we are experiencing about 35-37 degrees -but the index becomes higher with lots of different factors. Also, the impact of the pressure of the incoming train- does the structure can withstand it

      You’re exactly right!
I think of this project as an inspiration of the possibility of what can be explored rather than the only physical and restricted solution to a massive massive housing problem.
There may be so many “holes” as you call it is exactly what needs to be addressed down the road but with more involvement from architects, planners, designers and everyone really I think of Nightingale Manila as one possible solution worth exploring. I am very confident that these holes can be addressed but if we stop imagining, dreaming and thinking big, no change will happen.
The whole point of this thesis is to explore non-traditional and different spaces because there are no spaces left to built as mentioned in the research.
Sometimes as designers what we really need to do is really just imagine and think outside of the box for a minute to what’s possible rather than what’s not so we can all be inspired!
You will be surprised that there are so many different projects around the world that embraces the railway and everything associated around it rather than thinking of it as an obstacle or constraint. 😉
