FYI We old farmers call dirt that has decomposed organic material soil. Dirt is what will pass through a small screen, I forget how small. and the rest is one of four type of rock. This I learned in 1962, so no garante.
My son wants a mini excavator so bad, but they are quite expensive around here. Midi and full size are about the same price but then he would have to get a semi to haul it. He borrowed a mini for the weekend (or when ever he decides to take it back) and has been doing work around the farm.
my guess is the different decompisitions of natural matter from whats left of mother earth! along with different minerals! iron is red and the yellow is phosphorus and different calcium deposits which is a yellowish White and real gritty! your black dirt is broke down vegetation!

Red clay has alot of iron in it that is what we have in central Mississippi

That black dirt is the closest thing we have to topsoil.....it's leaf stained sand!
