    Hi Dylan, We love what you do! If you don't mind, I'd like to answer a few of the points you make in the video.
    The biggest difference that time will show is the materials used. POD is made from industrial strength HDPE. It's extremely strong, and can last a lifetime. HDPE is heavily used in outdoor playgrounds and agricultural products such as water tanks, track-side salt bins for railroads, etc. Thousands of outdoor uses. It can be recycled up to 7 times in the future. The ABS used in Nexdome is very fragile. It can crack very easily and has to be very carefully handled.
    We just heard from a SkyShed POD owner who replaced his POD dome (after seeing your video) with a Nexdome. When he applied power to the rotation motor, he reports that every Nexdome dome panel cracked. Unfortunately he gave his POD dome to a friend, and is now without a dome.
    SkyShed PODs have been in place and in use around the world for over 13 years. From the coldest part of Siberia, to mountains in China, to the Australian Outback, and everywhere in between. Many PODs are on their 3rd or even 5th owner now. They just keep going strong thru the worst Mother Nature can throw at them.
    We constantly hear from long time POD owners that their SkyShed POD is the best bit of astro gear that they have ever owned. Believe it or not, a 92 year old owner emailed me specifically to say that his POD was not only his favorite astronomy item he'd ever owned, but his favorite thing of anything he had owned in his life. That is the highest compliment we could hope for.
    You purchased a pre-owned SkyShed POD. Normally we get the chance to listen to a customer's needs and match them with the correct one of our designs. POD is designed for those with a large (or at least decent) sky view, who want to be able to see it. In your location with very little view other than straight up, I would not have recommended POD for you. I would have steered you toward our SkyShed Roll Off (Shed) which is perfect for locations with only a "straight up" view. Anyone around the world can build a SkyShed Roll Off using our Step-By-Step Plans. Thousands of owners have done this with great success over the last 20 years. The POD clamshell design was never right for your tight location and limited view in the first place.
    The addition of the POD Zenith Table allows POD to function more like Roll Off observatory. With the addition of the POD Zenith Table, the dome slides off easily, revealing a massive sky. The best of both worlds! Only SkyShed POD offers this "flexibility of use".
    You had a white POD. Customers in places like deserts will call me and assume they should purchase a White POD because it will be the coolest color for their location. This is not the case with HDPE. White HDPE allows some visible and IR light to pass thru. We have a wide range of colors which we make POD in. We are the only observatory maker to offer a wide range of colors, or a custom color of your choice. Many HOA's (Home Owners Association) have strict rules about color, and a POD may be the only choice for those who have to match their house color, or roof color, etc.
    Desert Tan or Lunar Gray would have been much better color choices for your location. They have a more dense pigment, and block more visible and IR light. But are light enough in tone as to not heat up as much as a darker color like our Forest Green would in the hot sun. Forest Green is better for places like Scandinavia where it doesn't get as hot in the Summer.
    In addition we have an option you can choose where we inject hardened foam insulation, up to 3" thick, in the wall panels and door frame of the POD. This not only makes it even stronger, but it helps to passively cool the POD in hot locations. We are the only observatory maker who can do this, due to PODs unique "double wall" design.
    Add a POD dome cover and you get total IR blockage, plus this makes POD dark inside during the day.
    My wife and I are lifelong astronomers. We love Astronomy and education/outreach so much, that we decided in the 90's to embark on a path to supply as many astronomers around the world as possible with low(er) cost, highly functional, long lasting observatories. I'm proud to say that with over ten thousand SkyShed PODs, Sheds, and now POD MAXs in place, we are achieving our goal and creating a legacy of supporting Astronomy and education.
    We spent years and tens of thousands of dollars researching and developing SkyShed POD, garnering feedback from fellow astronomers as we created. The owner of Nexdome purchased and older used POD as you did. In their case case they copied everything they could from our design, plus the design of our friends at Explora-dome, to create Nexdome. When you support us you are supporting inventors and original ideas. When you buy a Nexdome you are supporting those who would copy our original ideas, with thinner, cheaper, and more temporary materials.
    Since the early 2000's SkyShed has blazed a trail in observatory ownership. Manly have followed, not only our observatory designs, but our revolutionary telescope pier design as well. A big difference in POD and those who have copied us is the POD Bay (As in "Open the POD Bay Door HAL") Our original design Bay, designed to house your gear and keep equipment off the floor, is super strong. It's made from one molded part. Every other ob maker who has copied our Bay, (they even have the audacity to call them that!), make theirs out of numerous "slapped together", ill fitting panels. These are much weaker, more leak prone, and totally "destroy-able", if you run into them on your riding lawn mower, or a tree limb falls on them.
    We will continue to innovate and learn from our thousands of SkyShed owners. Probably the biggest difference between us and most of the other observatory makers, is our continual 24/7 support. We first consult with you, answer all of your questions, help you choose the design which is right for you, guide you thru assembly, support you into the future. We will even turn you away if we think that we don't have a design which will meet your needs. Our support goes on 24/7 for as long as you own your SkyShed. You have access to our personal cell numbers and you can reach us pretty well 365 days a year. We provide extensive support materials and guide you or assist you when you get stuck. Which is rare as our materials are so thorough.
    Purchasing an observatory is a big decision, not to be entered into lightly. "Pretty Pictures" online, and hyperbole do not show what will be sitting in your yard in 10 years or more. We can show you PODs which look "like new" after 13 years of operation and very minor maintenance. Show us another commercial observatory that stands up as well as POD over time. We dare you. It will certainly not be an observatory made out of fragile ABS like a Nexdome. The fatal flaw in their "design" is the material they chose to make it with.
    If you want the "best bang" for your long-term buck, do some research. Speak to long time owners. We're happy to put a call out to owners in case there's one in your area who you can speak to. Even pay a visit to in many cases. Most owners are more than happy to show off their SkyShed to a fellow astronomer, and talk about their experience with us.
    Thanks for the opportunity to set the record straight and clear up some misconceptions.
    CS!

      All your points are very valid and I agree that your product is built superior however, seems to me the point Dylan made that really stood out to me was that you are unable to view your zenith in the Skyshed Pod's.This is a valid concern that you should look into the design to get fixed and then I would say that your product IS without question leaps and bounds superior to the competition out there. If I were the owner/designer of this wonderful product I would try to step it up and fix this obvious flaw in the design. This concern seems to be mentioned in a few reviews by others as well. I love your product , customer service and support you offer, If you could get this issue corrected , the Skyshed Pod to me would be a no brainer to be the best backyard observatory and that your product stands alone without peers or a equal competition. I hope you might consider what I have said to help improve on your great product. It's so nice to see when a company listens to their consumers and fixes what they feel needs to be improved.

      If you think about turbulences, domes with narrows apetrturres such as nexdome are not good choices. You want to open as much as possible your dome for fast temperature equilibrium. Definitely not a good choice for high resolution imaging.

    Dylan, thank you for this comparison. I have had a five-bay POD since 2009. It has been a great product. I have the five-bay design, which means I then have two workstations while maintaining one bay for large monitors, another for an airconditioner/heater, and plenty of storage in still another. But what it does not do is provide a full-sky view and 100 percent protection from high rains. Your video is actually my first exposure to the NexDome. And, your video is the perfect introduction answering many of my questions. Again, thank you.

    After 9 years with my SkyShed Pod the only complaint I have is that the inline skate wheels are starting to fall apart. The ability to go out and be ready to observe in literally 10 minutes is a game changer. Last summer I washed the entire pod to remove years of accumulated grime, dust and pollen. It came up all squeaky clean. Like you, I was limited at the zenith until I built a POD zenith table to push the dome out of the way. There’s a video in my channel that shows the dome being pushed off.
    Unlike Australia, we in Canada have to deal with snow and low temperatures in addition to our few 30° C days. When I started my scope up last night it was -3° C at the start and -12° C when I closed up shop about 2:00 am. The materials have all weathered very well over the past 9 years, with the exception of the skate wheels that support the dome. I got the protective tarp option from SkyShed to cover the dome when I bought mine. It’s held up very well and still provides excellent rain protection. After some close inspection it appears I’ll need to redo the silicone caulking over the seams in the dome halves this spring.
    The NexDome appears to have a few features that would be in the “nice-to-have” category but those wouldn’t be the drivers to replace my current observatory with anything else. Now, if I could only convince that one neighbour to turn off his deck lights.
    Really enjoy the channel. Keep up the interesting content.

    SkyShed’s PODMAX does open past zenith, but it is a larger scale dome. A slot is a great advantage, again available in your Nexdome and PODMAX. Its nice to that extra coverage during winter viewing. You hit the biggest advantage of all! Setup time is greatly reduced! Zenith is a nice feature for sure. Point being, you’re out viewing in a matter of minutes!
    Personal experience is that Wayne and his crew are, indeed, SUPER dedicated to customer sat, and is very engaged in supporting his products. Unlike you, i have not had any experience with Nexdome, though it sounds like you had an excellent experience with them, as well. Thanks for sharing!

      Yeh the PODMAX is really the ferrari of domes.. I'd love one if I could afford it, for sure! I really like Wayne and his whole operation and the skyshed pod definitely took me a long way but the jump from the pod to the max was way too pricey with no middle option, so this solution is at least a kind of upgrade path for current pod users.

    Great presentation. Well, it does not look like the dome rotates very well on the POD rollers. That should be a smooth, finger pressure operation. Dust bits will get into the shutter track, (scrape, scrape) so that will need to be cleaned frequently. Maybe apply some thin teflon strips along the entire shutter channel? The gutters are a curious design. Those will also accumulate a lot of debris and water as you point out. They do make a dome cover. Don't knock the SkyShed POD too hard. They do offer a kit that allows you to push back the POD clamshell away from the zenith. In fact, I think they call it a zenith table.

    BTW, put a cord on the handle to open the sliding roof, you won't have to step up to pull it across. You can add a bit of velcro to secure the cord out of the way when not needed. Alternately you can use a hook on the end of a short broom handle(think a fishing gaff without the point) to pull the roof across.

    A little late watching this video and you Skyshed Pod video, but very informative for anyone getting deeper into AP. I built a Roll-off roof since I had the room few years back. Could not agree more with your reasons for having one of these. I live in forest in Connecticut with a limited FOV, so having something already set up to go even on iffy nights is critical to maximizing imaging time. If end up moving in the future I would probably look into one of these as they look a bit easier to build and I will be older. I noticed you did not build a permanent pier (concrete or steel). I use a concrete pier and it works well plus I don't have to worry about hitting the tripod legs. Looks like you use a whole concrete base which seems to work just as well...

      @DylanODonnell  5 лет назад +1

      videoaustralia it’s because I haven’t lubricated any of it and the roller bearings are ancient as I got the skyshed pod second hand a few years back.

      At one point they had wheels on the system that appear to have mounted to the sides of the opening, similar to the wheels they use for rotation of the dome on the wall sections. At some point they decided to go to a track system. They have been having issues with the system. I could spent hours explaining some of these issues. They shipped mine in October 2021. I asked if they had resolved their track issues before they shipped it. They did not reply but I got my answer. When I advised them of my problem and informed them I would be stopping payment until we resolved the problems they decided to no longer provide support and to make false accusations regarding my attempts to communicate with them. After waiting 7 months for them to deliver the thing and reading comments in the forum from people who waited 13 weeks and went through 3 or 4 different track system before getting something that worked and still had issues I felt justified in making them wait to get paid. They seem to have a different opinion. Their next move was to block me from logging into my account. So on the 25th of this month my NexDome has been occupying my telescope place and it is not usable. I cannot install my scope in it and have nothing left to do but try to inform as many people as I can of this bad decision to buy a NexDome. Fortunately I have every e-mail I sent them and in every instance I was polite and even offered some suggestions. At this point I would not put anything past NexDome. This apparently is not their first act in the world of Astronomy . I cannot verify this as it is second and third hand. I can only say I feel the comments are accurate based on my experience. I was told they operated a Telescope Store called ASTRO in Vancouver. I was also told they took a lot of money from customers and shut down in the middle of the nigh and disappeared until resurfacing as NexDome. Again, I am not stating any of this as fact I am just relaying what I have heard. None of it may be true or all of it may be true. The worst part of all this. I think their product has some merit. Only time will tell if it holds up in the weather. It could be a nice alternative to other options but not in its current state of development or with out support and probable a warranty.

    I have been in contact with Sidereal Trading about getting a Nexdome shipped out here to NZ. It has been suggested that a bay is not really necessary as there is plenty of room inside these domes. Would you consider a bay to be a worthwhile inclusion or is there plenty of room to work without one?

      I just built one a couple months ago now. I like it alot, it does a wonderful job keeping rain out. Only issue I and it seems others have is the door doesn't seal well. You end up having to add a couple layers of gasket to get it to seal water tight. Mine has been through several heavy thunderstorms with multiple inches of rain, not a drop of water in the dome.

      It might be pretty water tight but the Dew inside my nonfunction no support dome is huge. They claim it is 5 star for dew. I'm not sure how they came to that conclusion. I would ask but they don't like me. Because of issues with mine, I disputed their charge to Visa. I apologized and told them I would release the funds once the issues were resolved. I have just bought a Nextdome and have had many problems fitting it but my main problem is condensation, unless I can find a way to eliminate the water I will be back to square one and have to assemble the telescope and computer each time I want to use it. Do you think Bubblewrap would be a solution? Gordon.

    • @DylanODonnell
      @DylanODonnell  5 лет назад +1

      Condensation occurs when the temperature inside and out of something differs a lot. The warm side can hold more water, but the cold side can't so it crashes out of the air as condensation. To fix this you'd need to ventilate the dome such that the temperatures inside and out are similar. Also this is important for imaging. Hot / warm air in the dome will rise through the opening and create very poor seeing right in front of the scope!

    • @gullsea1111
      @gullsea1111 5 лет назад +1

      If you have a reasonable sky to the south then the city location is not so bad. I too live in a fairly light polluted city (Vancouver, BC), but my primary interest is in lunar and planetary observing. The light pollution is not a big factor since the objects are much brighter than the sky. Others who are interested in viewing deep sky objects have had good results with light pollution filters, but I have not tried that solution yet.
