In 1808, the Assyrian Gabriel Dumbo (1775-1832) revived the abandoned monastery, restored it, gathered many students who swore in poverty and celibacy, and founded a seminary there. First, Johann VIII Hormizd opposed this initiative, then Archbishop Mosul, even if he was supported by patriarchal administrator Augustin Hindi. Patriarch Joseph Audo, before he was appointed bishop of Mosul, was himself a monk of the monastery of Rabban Hormizd. Gabriel Dumbo was assassinated in 1832 by soldiers of Mohammed Pasha, a Kurdish emir Rawanduz. In 1838, the Kurds of Soran attacked the Rabban monastery of Hormizd and the city of Alkosh, and hundreds of Assyrians died [4]: 32, and in 1843 the Kurds began to collect as much money from Christian villages, killing those who refused: more than ten thousand Christians killed, and the icons of the monastery of Raban Ormizd damaged.
