  • Trevor Covich shares some of the casts he uses while fishing Commando Heads on high banks. In many such places, overhead casting is either extremely difficult or impossible. Trevor's tips will help you cast all the way across small streams with minimal effort, giving you a chance to fish almost the whole stream. He covers the upstream single spey, Perry Poke, and offhand snap T, with tips on how to keep your D loop away from the bank behind you. Find the 150 Grain Commando Head Trevor was fishing at opskagit.com.

    Great video. I am LOVING the Commando Heads here in UT. Allowing me get into some tighter water that rarely sees flys.

    This is exactly what I needed to see! I love fishing the texas coast on the jetties but one jetty on particular has flat jettie rocks below the walkway so its high banking behind me making it near impossible to back cast cause people walking behind me etc but thankfully this video shows how to work around stuff like that and cast out farther then the regular saltwater line i be using! I do only fly fish on calm wind days only anyways too

    Now we’re talking 👍👍 A very common situation and a great way to deal with the issue. Nicely explained - and filmed. And just one spool change away from switching back to floating dries. Excellent.
    Any recommended tippet length to complement the 5’ sinking micro tip?
    Cheers

    Very nice strategy for a high bank which I always face here in the Sierra Nevada range rivers... Any suggestions on the proper weight OPST line for my 7wt switch rod that normally I line with 30' 510gr Airflo scandi head ?

    Question: Are you running lazer line behind the commando head? I am currently using a 9' 4wt. rod with 30# lazer line, 10' 175 grain commando head, 10' poly leader, 2-4' tippet. It looks like some people are just looping a shorter 5' commando head to their existing WF floating fly line and using a silghtly longer tippet. the draw back to fishing the lazer line, to me, is that you have to strip it to the tip in order to cast. What do you prefer?

      Nicholas Lewton dude that's spey casting. You strip in line. Try stripping 50lb mono when it's pouring snow in middle of January and your so cold your hands are numb.

    Thanks for the expert advice. I have a 9 foot Sage Z axis and have just purchased a Lamson 3+ reel but are having difficulty working out what Skagit lines to buy. I fish small to medium rivers in New Zealand. Can you offer advice? Thanks from down under.

      Hi. I saw your question and thought I could share what I've learned. First, the 3+ is going to be too small as the heads are so thick they'll eat up all the space. I struggle with 5+ holding the backing, head, and tip. As for which line matches up to your rod? Both SA and OPST have rod/line charts. Since you didn't specify the rod weight, I'll make an educated guess. A 5wt could be in the 180-grain range. I have a 6wt Loomis IMX Pro and 6wt Hardy Demon Smuggler and a 225-grain with a 20-grain floating tip that works well.

    How is this different from tying a 10 foot length of 6 weight line to the backing and casting with a 3-weight rod? I've had a spare reel with that setup since I was as kid.

    Would you change anything about your cast if you had a strong wind blowing downstream?

    • @OPSkagit
      @OPSkagit  3 года назад

      Cast off your downstream shoulder, and accentuate your "out-and-around" motion to throw your d-loop into a lower plane.

    I have a 8' 6" # 5 wt, medium fast action fly rod and I would like to try putting a butt on it to get started in micro skagit.
    What ideal butt size would be recommended for this rod, please?. Thanks,

    Hi, the skagit head should be out off the rod guides to make the csat, right ?

    • @OPSkagit
      @OPSkagit  Год назад +1

      That is correct. 6 inches of running line is a good amount to be out of the guide.
