I think the main riff of Honey White is one of the most amazing riffs in rock ever! and Morphine is such an underrated band, hard to believe they aren't as famous as, say, Nirvana or RHCP...
I can't argue. There is something about their music that is both down and dirty yet sophistocated at the same time. Hip and incredibly ground breaking while refusing to be corporate or commercial.
You wanna know how to tell great music in this day and age? When guys can stand behind their mic, hardly move and not look particularly flashy and BLOW YOUR ****ING HEAD OFF. Music that stands on it's own merits. No flash, no pomp, no compensating for lack of integrity with flash and showmanship. Just the music selling itself. THIS was Morphine. My own personal obsession for 10 years running, and no sign of slowing down.
Sandman proving that sometimes less is more, who thought that with only 2 strings you could make such groovy basslines. R.I.P Mark Sandman and his genius mind
When I was a uni student, I met Mark Sandman during his Treat Her Right days. I gave him a lift to an all-night cafe, and I remember that he seemed so sad-sad in a "life is exhausting" kind of way. When I heard that he died suddenly, it was jarring. He seemed so authentic. I wish I would have bothered to talk to him. What an incredible talent.
I'm still playing these songs with the CD I got years ago. So much fun! And wonderful syncopation - jive, jazz and rock fused perfectly together. Love it.
This is cooler than any ten bands combined. Jesus these guys rule!!!! Original, ground breaking, amazing song writing and playing and a legacy that CAN'T be tarnished with repetitiveness and a loss of innovation. It hurts that he's gone, but he'll never become a self parody or irrelevant. RIP Sandman. TBQH I think they still had a couple great albums left in them and probably a LOT more recognition by the mainstream media.
To all those of you who said they had the pleasure of seeing this live! You are so lucky :) I can tell it would've been an incredible experience hanging out with Mark and the band listening to their jams. Makes me sad that this won't happen no more! RIP Sandman
When he walks up at the start of the Super Sex video, with two sax's in his hand, he has this look in his eyes that says: "I am about to blow your mind"........then he does.
I totally saw them at Horde fest too! (Chicago) One of the few bands I got into because I saw them live instead of seeing them live because I loved them. I have seen way more than my share of amazing shows and Morphine is definitely in the top three~ possibly 2 (Front row Björk at Red Rocks kind of fucked up their chance for all-time favorite show) I will never stop talking about that night. It’s hard for me to stop the comment here!
Just got into Morphine ! I cant believe how late I am .Morphine has a low down dirty powerful sound that I still cant believe! Awesome band.......found them through Les Claypool cause he always talks about the band with such love plus he says that he misses Mark a lot.
Sandman used to play every other tues at the plow and stars. Mem: I'm walking past him to hit an ATM and go back to the pub. Sandman is unloading equipment out of the back of a car. He says, 'you should come in, it's a good club.' He was right about that. Every second tuesday nite, Sandman (He refered to himself in the third person) would play, with special guests. It seemed like he played a different instrument each nite. He was an odd person and a wonderful egotist and musician. Rock on !
Yeah. He was one of those rare people who were cooler than you, and you were OK with that. I only lived in Boston for 2 1/2 years, but those years were 1994-1996, so....
Don't know if anyone else has pointed this out, but I love how Billy Conway, in the first minute twenty or so, basically recreates part of the drum solo from Inna-Gada-Da-Vida.
I got given this on CD when i was 16, I used to listen to it everyday on the way t college. They were great days, whenever I mumble too much or talk shit an people look at me like I'm a massive weirdo I think of the former track. Big Peas X
Strange thing, more twenty years ago when I saw it live on TV, I thought the face of the singer looked like he had a heart-attack (6:21). I felt very sad when I knew he died of a heart attack on stage. Mark Sandman was a real "avant-garde" musician. RIP.
I'll never stop listening to this group nor will I the people who introduced them and turned me on to them. One thing is for sure. They are definitely not main stream by all means..I cant think of anybody from any era that I can compare to the sound wise
That drum opening is one for the ages.
RIP Mark.

Ha for riffs you need electric guitar !!!! Theres only 2string bass!!!!! This band was a genius mind work
Agreed ,I love morphine so much .
@@dawidklucz849 Actually every instrument can make riffs, it is not exclusive to guitars

F**k off
Trio of pure magicians ,sounds we never heard before
They are so good it hurts....
+Johanna Dey ironic...since Morphine is supposed to be a painkiller... hehehe :)
Johanna Dey lol
They've been speaking my language for years now. Hard to believe that I'm now older than Sandman was when he died.
It's the same for me, he died here in Italy, on stage in Rome, and when i've heard the news on tv, i was really upset cause i couldn't believe it
Mark Sandman God bless you one of the most talented musicians ever

Chronologo, don't forget he's playing on a pawnshop bought bass as well; love that bass.
You should see Somali musicians. Their instrument has ONE string and the rip it up.

I saw these guys in a huge field outside Austin Texas around '94 and they effin ROCKED.
This band's great! I'm mostly into 60s & 70s, but the 90s keep popping up pleasant surprises like this one.
Sameeee
please dont be nostalgic plenty of good stuff being made right now
I'm still playing these songs with the CD I got years ago. So much fun! And wonderful syncopation - jive, jazz and rock fused perfectly together. Love it.
Got to see these guy's a few times, living near Boston and all! These guy's never got the recognition they deserved!
awsome drumming!!!

Got into this band way too late but their records have been blowing my mind repeatedly for the past 3 years
the best drum intro ever.
def
I wonder if Boney M picked up their drum intro to Rasputin from this.
@@VanganiRacing That would be remarkably impressive, since it predates this show by at least 15 years.
@@SpawnofHastur The tongue-in-cheekness was in full operation on this one.
@@VanganiRacing I figured, but Poe's Law and all.
one of my favorite bands growing up, my dad used to listen to them live, bought the cds n got me hooked! so sad =(
This band influences me in so many ways!
Amazingly beautiful. That's the sound !
I must have watched this video at least 200 times and I still can not believe it.
RIP Sandman, we miss you more than it is possible to say
These dudes sound exactly the same or even better live than recorded. Few can boast about that. Top band right here, bitches.
The Father of "Low Rock!" Genius!
And “fuck rock”!
Because he is speaking our language.
Soundtrack to the longboard surf movie 'Powerglide,. Captured me then, never forgotten!
Это любовь на века. Невозможно разлюбить услышав впервые. Марк, ты жив! Мы помним тебя!
great music they play great together , we love you mark
Dana Colley is a fucking Boss.
When he walks up at the start of the Super Sex video, with two sax's in his hand, he has this look in his eyes that says: "I am about to blow your mind"........then he does.
The best best drum intro
Just Great. Morphine are one of my favorite bands. Rip Mark!
Amazing, increible recordar estas melodias.
You still speak my language.
Morphine is great music for a bruised soul.
Not just a bruised soul...Every Real Soul!
Thank you. Saw them several times. Appreciate the footage
cool!! I knew about them in 2002. brillant musicians !! I love his voice and the sound of the bass. cool !!
My only regret in life is that I never will see the greatest band on earth live.

I saw the surviving members a few years back at Atwoods Tavern in Cambridge. It was a pretty magical time.

Hurts to know Sandman is gone, not even morphine can fix that, but I am so, so happy my kid is studying sax and I can share this with her.
I met them @ horde fest 98' they were as interested in who my friend and I were as we were them. Was so awesome.

You think You were late?! I just heard them today for the first time. That's embarrassing. They were amazing!
Rock at its basic and its best. RIP Mark. No one came close to your enthusiasm for GOOD rock.

Wow, 'The Plow & Stars' is a name I have not heard in decades! What a great TINY place. lol
the true egotist sees through the ego-game and decides to muck in and play again for kicks
Good ol days in the peoples republic

Ah, the Plough.
Can I just say this is fucking bad-ass music. Just fucking awesome!
23 people clearly don't speak Mark's language.
Yup, they suk!
First time I heard this band I fell in love. Same with the Clash.
Underrated Brilliance
genius, visceral, intellectual, totally one of a kind.
Esta musica é boa pela força do baterista, ele fala comnosco atraves das batidas é especial
Love IT
...Neighbor should cover Honey White
I agree! Their timbre is easily recognizable.
Don't know if anyone else has pointed this out, but I love how Billy Conway, in the first minute twenty or so, basically recreates part of the drum solo from Inna-Gada-Da-Vida.
OUWE!!! 2 a da greatest tracks ever! Fergitaboutit!

You Speak My Language is from Morphine's 1992 album "good". It was my first album of theirs and remains my favorite.
No but I have a live performance of Primus with Dana Colley on Sax during Here Come The Bastards.....I have to see that video you speak of. Damn!
Best live performance on youtube right here.
