    A significant omission in this very good account is to not acknowledge that with the end of the Napoleonic war, the bankers sought to restore England to the gold standard, which happened in 1822, and in preparation drove down the price level (deflated the economy) by 50% over the next 7 years, causing wholesale misery for working people. This is what provoked the Captain Swing uprising, which was blamed on the slackness of poor relief, and hence led to the poor law commission.

      Hi! Could you explain the concept of 'poor rates' again for me? If it's not too much trouble. Cheers!

    It's interesting how the idea that the poor 'bring it upon themselves' coincided with the beginnings of industrialisation and capitalism as we know it.

    The system hasn't changed much. Daycare cenres have joined the mix and the only people to benefit are the owners, using the old tried and tested - charge as much as you possibly can, suck in as much as you can in subsidies. Under pay your staff while demanding high end service. Spend as little as possible, pocket as much as possible.

      Yes... And give a child a PKG of ketchup to count as a vegetable. Also giving infants and children watered down milk. Shameful but it still goes on here in America.

    I would think that during war times wouldn't they take people from the workhouse to be soldiers, nurses, etc?? I often wondered about it. I heard that a lot of prison inmates were forced to serve in military too. As a way of wiping their sentence out. Any info?

      Workhouse inmates were free agents and couldn't be 'taken' to do anything. By the 1900s, there were very few able-bodied men in workhouses anyway.

    What did it mean if there was a 'selected ordered removal' under the Poor law? This happened to my 5x great grandfather in the late 1700s, in Bethnal Green. He had 5 people in his family. What would happen to them then?

    • @peterhigginbotham
      @peterhigginbotham Год назад

      They would be escorted back to your 5xGF's parish of settlement.

      Those that were forced to pay for the shiftless could be described as living in involuntary servitude.
