Omg!!! Love these pasteles. My parent's neighbor is 97 and from Puerto Rico she would make these for the holiday's. I always asked her how to make this but she is right now not in the best condition. I will try this and see if I get her approval.lol. thanks so much!
Dec 2020 AWESOME!!!!! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU. FOR YOUR SHORT DIRECT TO THE POINT VIDEOS. I am a first responder working a lot with little time for myself. I was able to cook for the first time, delicious pasteles ( BOTH THE YUCA AND THE MASA) at the same time in less than 2 hours start to finish and ready to eat on a plate .
Yay! Glad you enjoyed! And thank you so much for your service as a first responder--we are truly lucky to have great people like you keeping us all safe. Feliz Navidad!! ❄❄🎄😁
Loving all the videos! Bringing so many memories! Feeling confident in taking on so many laborious recipes, like the pasteles but also happy to see simpler methods too! Thank you so much for encouraging the beautiful traditions! ¡Cuídense y sigan con el buen trabajo!

I haven't tried baking them with parchment paper, so I'm not sure. In my experience, parchment paper doesn't do as well at high heat as aluminum foil, so I definitely wouldn't back them any higher than 350.
Due to Covid, I am not able to go and get my pastele paper and bananas and plantains and banana leaves to make my pasteles this year, But I think I can buy frozen yuca. I definitely can get all the rest of the items needed so this will be a fist but at least I will have pasteles for Christmas!. Thank you so much for this.
I had asked a question but never mind I found out the hard way way. No you cannot use parchment paper is archment paper my yuka ayuka was stuck to the paper for, they were delicious but stuck to the paper but here's another question what can I do to make the Masa more mois more moist or what I mean is what can I put in it to make it more softer after cooking minds were a little bit summer it's bit solid not completely but they were a little bit too firm
Hi there! We have used parchment paper for baking them so I’m sorry that yours got stuck. You can add some more shortening and liquid to make them softer.
First let me say that I have tried several recipes for pasteles from other sites. They were edible but none came close to our grandma's pasteles. Your recipes are perfect ! I make them for my 87-year-old mother and she loves them. I boiled my yuca pasteles prior to freezing them. How long do I have to bake them from frozen state?
This really warms my heart! This is the whole point of putting this channel out there. If you boiled them and then freezes them then you just have to bake them until they are warm all the way through. I would suggest a low temperature like 300 or 325 and then try for about 30 min and give one a try.
We have never tried baking the traditional ones. I’ve seen a lot of new videos of people making the traditional pasteles layered in a baking dish and then bake it but we have not tried that yet.
Awesome informative video... just one question😃 can I make these ahead of time, freeze them, then bring them out on Thanksgiving??? Another thing guys I did not have the leaf for this open planned Recipe so I'm going to use parchment paper because it's resistant to the oven...is that OK???
Hi Diana, you can definitely make them ahead of time and freeze them. Take them off the freezer the night before you plan to cook them and then bake them
I am unable to go out and get my paper and green bananas for my patellas but this is a great alternative thank you so very much I appreciate this so much love your Channel I will keep checking for new things to learn how to cook you guys are awesome thank you Merry Christmas a happy New Year and that this year brings us all health happiness and above all peace
To be honest, I've never tried it, but I don't see why it wouldn't work--particularly if you still use the banana leaf. If anyone else on the channel has tried it, please jump in. Also, Ivette, if you try it let me know how it turns out! 😊
Yes, very similar! I think the big difference is that these are filled, whereas I think Kwanga (at least the ones I've seen) is generally just the yuca/cassava. Although I'm sure lots of people do them different ways.
A lot of Hispanic grocery stores will carry them in the frozen section. At least the frozen ones (which are way easier to use). If you want fresh ones, then yes, you'll have to ask around and see if anyone has some, because I've never seen those sold in stores. If you do use fresh leaves, however, you are going to want to sear them over an open flame before using them for pasteles. This softens up the leaf and makes it a lot easier to fold. Good luck!
Why doesn’t anyone do a pastels that is stuffed with veggies and grinder beans if need be? Plant based is just that… I don’t know how many of this or that is needed for the bananas and so on but I will learn, what I won’t say this is plant based when it’s not, nor veggie pastels when it’s not. Stay tuned…

Hola!

Making them right now. My grandmother used to make them and passed 1yr ago. Brings back so many memories thanks for this video.

Mines are already frozen. I really dislike the boiling in water. You think I can put turn in the oven?
What did you wrap them on?

Waiting for that coquito video. Merry Christmas.
Merry Christmas to you too! ❄🎄😄
can you freeze the leftover
You can certainly freeze any leftover masa or any uncooked pasteles too.
And is the aluminum dangerous to use without leaf?
Probably not dangerous for the oven but the leaf gives pasteles a very unique taste so it would not taste the same.
These look great! Can you use this method for regular masa pasteles?
We have never tried baking the traditional ones. I’ve seen a lot of new videos of people making the traditional pasteles layered in a baking dish and then bake it but we have not tried that yet.

@@JeffandJosPuertoRicanKitchen Thanks🙏
Wich size of cup use? Thanks
Do you mean when we are scooping in the masa? We used a 1/3 cup and added two portions (so 2/3 cup total).

Egg roll with beef
👍🏼👍🏼
Parchment instead of aluminum?
Yes, much better for baking.
Can you bake any pastele? Or only Yuka masa? And do I have to add the vegetable??
You can bake other pasteles but they may turn out a bit tough. Our recipe calls for the vegetable shortening so yes, we recommend it.
Genius the yes it is the first two years in the game rge and HAS been a good
🙌🙌
Can we baked the plantain pasteles too
To be honest, I've never tried it, but I don't see why it wouldn't work--particularly if you still use the banana leaf. If anyone else on the channel has tried it, please jump in. Also, Ivette, if you try it let me know how it turns out! 😊
This looks like "Kwanga" from Congo
Yes, very similar! I think the big difference is that these are filled, whereas I think Kwanga (at least the ones I've seen) is generally just the yuca/cassava. Although I'm sure lots of people do them different ways.
Aren't those called Ayacas. Don't know if I'm spelling it correctly🤣🤣😱🇵🇷
Yes! Some people call them hallacas, I also don’t know the correct spelling 😝, but you are correct!
Can you make rice pasteles with pork no green plantain pls advise.
We don’t have a recipe for that. Our families never made rice pasteles, it wasn’t until we were adults that I heard more about it.
Pastelles are popular in Hawaii too
Interesting! Are they generally made the same way there?
@@JeffandJosPuertoRicanKitchen I think so it’s with banana and stuff
@@austinb3560 Very cool! Gotta book me a vacation over there and try them 🤣🤣
@@JeffandJosPuertoRicanKitchen ya it might be different tho part of the recipe was lost on the swim from Puerto Rico to Hawaii.
@@austinb3560 Lol 🤣🤣
this is definitely on my list for the holiday
Great to hear!!!
Okay, you covered two methods of cooking the pastelas, but can you steam them..?
We have never steamed them so not sure but probably worth a try.
How long to cook frozen ones?
I honestly haven't tried baking frozen ones, but would imagine it would take at least 1.5 hours, if not more.
I’m going to try tomorrow I’m still doing pasteles I let you know
Good luck!
@@JeffandJosPuertoRicanKitchen thank you
Come to palau, we have that in many variations. delicoiusness. love yuca
Oh man! I would love to come! 🤩🤩
How about Evaporated milk?
Some people use it, we don’t
Thank you 😊
Where in the in the,U,S,A,.. Can I buy. The banana leaf's,,"??
Oh" what I meant was where in Arizona, could I buy 💯 percent fresh banana leaf's,,

Thanks for sharing! That's awesome. Do you also make it with yuca in Vietnam?
LOL he said "Horno" 😂
that shit look dank wtf
Oh! It was delicious
Pasteles are hard to make l do
Can definitely be time consuming--although the pre-ground masa is a godsend!

I am ashamed to say I have never eaten pasteles de yuca.
It's definitely not as popular as traditional pasteles so no need to be ashamed! But that said, now's your chance to try it 😉😂
