Brilliant video thank you :) I was just about to ask what the point of things like riso and screen printing are when you can use digital prints, and then I saw your link in the description :D thank you
Pretty dang thorough video. This is only the second video I've watched on this printing technique that apparently I hadn't heard of until an art center here in Chicago posted they'd be bringing classes for it back.
This was the most informative video on risograph I've ever seen thank you so much!!!😭😭 I'm definitely going to look into your other videos because i want to get into risograph to make zines👀👀
1) Use the Riso FW5130 series, which is full color. Ink is very similar (I wouldn't be surprised of it's the same ink). It also does not use a master so no reason to refill masters or empty them. 2) Use at least once a day (twice a week minimum) as it is ink based and will clog up the holes and you'll need to call a tech to unclog them. 3) Try leaving the printed pages to dry before running it through the machine again to avoid roller Mark's in the second pass. There is no heating element (unlike copiers) so you have to let it air dry. 4) It is a high volume machine so if you're going to run fewer than 30 prints, you might as well use a copier as it is cheaper. 5) We're basically talking about a glorified ink jet printer so take similar cautions as you would an ink jet. 6) Risos are built around the ink and the guy who invented it said as much Therefore inks are very expensives.
Thanks so much for this very thoughtful comment! I will look into that machine, since I haven't heard of it before. I do always airdry for at least a half a day, a whole day if my deadlines permit me. :-) But the ink still smudges when there's heavy coverage, and sometimes artists just spray fixative on the prints tbh. It's true that the riso becomes more cost effective as volume goes up, for sure!!! Thank you again for the comment!!
I'm interested in your comment. I was just sitting here wondering how in the world this process could possibly compete with either inkjet or laser, both of which register perfectly and dry completely on a wide variety of papers, including coated grades. Olivia says in the video that she can only use uncoated paper, the ink never really dries, her customers some times get ink on their hands from her finished product, she has trouble with tracking marks, and registration is not guaranteed. How is that "far superior"? (Full disclosure - I am retired from nearly 40 years in the printing industry, both offset lithography and letterpress.) This is not meant as any kind of negative comment; I just don't understand.
It’s also non archival so if you want to make anything with permanence a Riso is not going to give you that the original intention behind the machine was to be able to make simple copies of things extremely cheap
As a rapid copy device it’s is more efficient and better looking aesthetically than either Inkjet or laser. Whether the house chooses to charge extra for that aesthetic is a different matter. If you are doing a hundred or more copies of something, colour Riso *should* be less expensive than either other realistic rapid print technology. And it will “pop” more/look better. Less than a hundred, say fifty or ten it will only make sense to chose something else and then try, as best you can, if necessary to emulate the Riso look. Remember manual DIY screen printing is also an option. And is archival with the right inks. Riso is for pretty stuff that is distributed to a smaller circle/community and then discarded/filed after use.
I study at WashU and our professor played your video in class! They also pasted your link in our handouts/page and told us to watch your video if we haven't lol good job on the fabulous vid!
Oh my god I'm a bit embarrassed now about the low budget and chaotic quality of this video LOL!!! I'm glad it's somewhat helpful and I wish you and your classmates a lot of fun working with riso! I would love to see your projects link me hahahaha
I thought the duster had something to do with the process lol. You explained very well the process. I finally now how this printing technique works. Thank you.
thank you very much. I have a friend who have a Riso. I found interesting what she does so i searched for info and got here. Very informative. Again, thank you.
Huh, this is really interesting. I keep seeing Riso being mentioned, but had no clue what it meant. It kind of reminds me of screen printing, with the registration marks. Really beautiful outcomes.
Fantastic! This print process is new to me. I saw a beautiful two color riso print by an artist and was inspired to research the process. I love your video...you explained everything perfectly.
Thank you so much!! I'm planing on trying out the Riso tomorrow but I was kind of nervous.. This was really helpful and I'm super excited to use it! Also, I really like your style of explaining. Really clear and to the point thank you!
Just came across a risograph print on insta and had to look it up. this was the first video i clicked. so helpful and entertaining i had to subscribe! also, probably because your filipino. Pindot ~ hahaha
Saw this on tumblr and subscribed! You're so clear and informative and I didn't know about this kind of printing process before! Big zine dreams!!! Also your voice is very relaxing! Keep up the good work, support canadian printers!!!
You are Freaking Awesome. I was looking all over the tubes to learn about Riso machines... this video is way, way, way exactly what I was looking for!! great job!
I was wondering how a riso printer works and immediately found this video and it's everything, I enjoyed it very much and learned a lot so thank you!! Also I think you're funny 😄
Great video, I love graphic art and printing. Also on my way to Indonesia 18 years ago, my plane made an emergency landing in Manilla. ha ha So I was in the airport....
!! THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT IVE BEEN LOOKING FOR :-)!! all of my saves on pinterest have this texture and i’ve been wondering for weeks how prints like this are achieved. i’m a graphic design student so looks like it’s time to ask my department if we have one of these! thank you so much!!✨⭐️
Thanks for this video! It's very informative and your explanation made everything really clear. I'll look into riso when I finish making the zine I'm working on
Thank you for this very informative video! You said the ink lifts off the paper if you rub it too much - is there a way to seal it the way you would seal a more traditional medium like charcoal?
Videos like this make me happy, as Riso is awesome, but also sad because mine is just sat gathering dust as 99% of my print jobs for people these days end up being best suited to laser and thus that is what I end up doing :(. It's the low number issue that you mention, people just want 1-5 of stuff they just don't 'get' it. My poor, poor riso :(. Superb video though :D, really explained it well. Perhaps I should just send potential clients and link to it to explain better than I do haha.
Hello! I only have a riso in my studio so I can't print laser. Most of the people who come to my studio want riso specifically so it works out! I will come out with another video soon explaining the main differences between laser and riso (once I get over this cold that I have), but please feel free to share this if you think it will help clients understand the process better! Thanks so much for your note!!
Very informative video! This is exactly what I was looking for. Which printer 2-color would you recommend for someone who wants to sell riso prints-the same one you have currently?
The leading edge (the edge of the paper that will be fed into machine) will have a gap because the screen doesnt start right at the top. The rest should be okay. I suggest using a larger paper and just cutting to full bleed.
this is actually crazy, I use one of these machines in my print shop to make envelopes and letterhead, i had no idea that people use these for such complicated procedures.
Hello and thank you! The fact sheet on my machine recommends 46 to 210 GSM, so that would be about 13 lb bond to 110 lb index or 80# cover. No point, offset is way cheaper and faster for large batches. At this point only artists use Riso it's hard to fake the analog effects digitally
I like how you're just swishing duster around
I use it to dust the riso and also it made me feel less awkward weirdly!!!!
Ha! Totally! The way I was going to put it was, "I like the way you use your duster as a wand!"
Pretty dang thorough video. This is only the second video I've watched on this printing technique that apparently I hadn't heard of until an art center here in Chicago posted they'd be bringing classes for it back.

I have been a Tech for Riso Machine's for 20 yrs and I can say if you understand how a Riso works , we are far superior to all technology to date!
I wish I knew more technical stuff!

Such a useful but also peaceful video ! Definitely needed to watch this to prepare for my Riso class coming this week ! Love everything about this !!
Your voice is very soothing and this process is really cool. You should make a second info video on how the masters are created!
I study at WashU and our professor played your video in class! They also pasted your link in our handouts/page and told us to watch your video if we haven't lol good job on the fabulous vid!

I thought the duster had something to do with the process lol. You explained very well the process. I finally now how this printing technique works. Thank you.
Great video like the straight forward style throughout and the personality at the end. Informative and cool. 👍👍👍 keep making!
I have only just found out about risograph and this video has made me very excited to learn more about this form of printing!
That's great!! Thanks for the comment!
I found it the most detail practical information on risograph printing. Thank you
Thank you!!
thank you very much. I have a friend who have a Riso. I found interesting what she does so i searched for info and got here. Very informative. Again, thank you.
You’re welcome!! ☺️😊
so helpful and so in depth! thank you for making this, risographs are too cool! just the color chart alone is art!
love this overview! I learned so much and it was a blast watching and listening to you! The duster was crucial.
There is this magically soothing quality in your video.
Huh, this is really interesting. I keep seeing Riso being mentioned, but had no clue what it meant. It kind of reminds me of screen printing, with the registration marks. Really beautiful outcomes.
This video explains so clear and your voice is so sweet
I love you already. Def going to check your store out when I finish my Zine.
Good explainer! I saw a bunch of cool riso prints on Etsy and was curious what the machine was that made them and now I know.
Fantastic! This print process is new to me. I saw a beautiful two color riso print by an artist and was inspired to research the process. I love your video...you explained everything perfectly.
Thank you so much! I'm really glad that my video was useful to you! Hope you have a great rest of your week!
Ahhhh Olivia this was super interesting and informative!! And I love the duster accessory ;)
Ahhhh thank you so much!!! LOL!!!! It gets so dusty in the apartment that I finally had to get a duster.
Thank you so much!! I'm planing on trying out the Riso tomorrow but I was kind of nervous.. This was really helpful and I'm super excited to use it! Also, I really like your style of explaining. Really clear and to the point thank you!
Oh thank you!! Have fun!!
Thank you! Tell me about your printer model. Also any tips on getting one on a deal or places to shop for one?
I discovery this print technic only now and find your chanel, very cool intro of the risography. Thank you!
I love the poster for West Harlem Art Fund.
I had never heard of this printing process.
Thanks for the video.
Extremely informative. After watching this, why would anyone even bother with a risograph?
Hii lol i have a video talking about this: ruclips.net/video/Nh9TgMDy1kA/видео.html
So informative. I dont even know how I got here, but I stayed. I learned so much.
Omg hahahaha thank you! Wow hows about that RUclips algorithm.
Just came across a risograph print on insta and had to look it up. this was the first video i clicked. so helpful and entertaining i had to subscribe! also, probably because your filipino. Pindot ~ hahaha
I'm planning to fall in love with riso, and your video is really helping me to do that. Thank you!
this was so helpful and engaging to watch! thank you for making it:-)
Thank you!!
Thank you for creating such an instructional video! It's amazingly well-explained!
Im glad it helped!!

Awesome Olivia! Thanks for sharing! Just wondering if I can use the riso print INK for screen printing?
this is so cool. we have riso machines at my work but i don't believe they are like this. this is a cool process.
You are Freaking Awesome. I was looking all over the tubes to learn about Riso machines... this video is way, way, way exactly what I was looking for!! great job!
I'm glad you found the information you were looking for!
So interesting! I didn't know how complicated riso printing was, I had thought it was just like laser printing.
Thanks! There's definitely a lot of finessing and work involved to try to get it as close as possible to the artist's intention. :-D
I was wondering how a riso printer works and immediately found this video and it's everything, I enjoyed it very much and learned a lot so thank you!! Also I think you're funny 😄
Ahaha thanks!! Im glad it helped!!
Great video, I love graphic art and printing. Also on my way to Indonesia 18 years ago, my plane made an emergency landing in Manilla. ha ha So I was in the airport....

Great presentation, beautifully clear and informative - best Riso explanation I have seen and great fun to watch - thank you!
Thanks!!
Thank you for educating me on this method of printing. It was the introduction I needed!
I am really glad!!
Thanks so much for this - I love your thoughtful approach and style!!
Love you. Nice explanation
Do you need to buy "cylinders" for every colour or can you pull a black ink tube out of the cylinder and put an orange tube in?
Please see this video ruclips.net/video/v7AyM4EMWwM/видео.html. I am hoping it answers your question sufficiently.
At my college we have an off brand riso and this info is super valuable thank you for this video!
Thank you!
Thank you so much for this video. It is wonderful and makes me so excited to learn more! Which model of riso do you use?
Thanks! Please see this video for the answers to this and other questions you may have: ruclips.net/video/v7AyM4EMWwM/видео.html

The right info delivered thoroughly and clearly, salamat po!
Ahh salamat!! Glad it helped!!
Great vid Olivia! Awesome to see some Riso content popping up on youtube. happy printing from housework(press) !!
joe T Thanks!! I definitely want to create more resources soon since I've been getting so much support to do it!!
Is the ink used in it an oil base? The ink we use in a normal offset machine?
Yes it is either soy oil or rice bran oil. Not sure if it is the same as offset since I don’t have experience with offset.
Olivia and Pindot Got it, thank you very much
This was veeeery helpful, I liked how you explained it! :) Thank you
Super informative, covered everything I wanted to know. Awesome!
Thank you!!!
I had no idea what a risograph was before watching this video and now I want two
Haha! See if there is a studio in your area lol!!!
Is the maintenance on the machine a lot? I am thinking of investing in one of these
great video. thank you so much!
Wow, this is a fantastic explanation. Thank you very much! What an amazing machine.

Interesting process, thanks for sharing.

Great overview of the RISO process. Thanks.
Thanks!!
Hi Olivia, can This Riso series print 250grams paper ? Thanks
Great video very informative, where could I order Riso Risograph RA Color Drum Black Ink?
Please and thank you
Hi thanks! Please try a printer dealership. Sorry I am not a riso salesperson!
Just learned about it today, thank you for this video
Np!! Glad it helped!!
you explained it quite detail. Thank you!
Very informative video. Thanks for your info on Riso
if i will be using an 8 1/2 by 11 paper, can you print on the whole paper area using a B4 size riso machine?
The leading edge (the edge of the paper that will be fed into machine) will have a gap because the screen doesnt start right at the top. The rest should be okay. I suggest using a larger paper and just cutting to full bleed.
thank you for the info. but i want to print receipts using riso with registration markings for cutting purpose
this is actually crazy, I use one of these machines in my print shop to make envelopes and letterhead, i had no idea that people use these for such complicated procedures.
The more you know😉
Very informative. thanks for such a video olivia
You're welcome thank you!
Super helpful and insightful! Thank you!
Amazing! Thanks to Novum, I discovered Risograph. I liked the illustrations at 6'12". Is the book being sold? What's the name? Thanks.
Very interesting and informative
Omg the gaalee art on that one page 🥹
Great video! What is the heaviest paper you can run through a Riso machine?
Hello and thank you! The fact sheet on my machine recommends 46 to 210 GSM, so that would be about 13 lb bond to 110 lb index or 80# cover. The paper needs to be weighty enough to be able to withstand getting pulled into the machine and getting a bunch of ink on it, however, the feeding mechanism has a thickness limitation, and chokes on really heavy papers.
This video is amazing!
Thank you very much Olivia for this in depth video on printing with the Riso printer.
If this is okay with you, I would very much like to add translated subtitles so I can share this with my friends.
At the moment this is not possible (says RUclips) so maybe you can adjust a setting to allow custom translations of this video? Thank you very much and have a nice week.
Hi, I enabled it. Thank you so much for this valuable service!
I love the imperfections of riso :)
Fantastic explanation. X
Does the rubber roller only touch the edge of the page or does it roll over the entire sheet?
Actually this depends! Sometimes the tracking stops or is less obvious and sometimes you can see some through whole sheet
Great video. Just got a Riso and this is an awesome resource
Thanks!!
would this type of printer do well with a standard one color (navy blue) on a letterhead? such as 12pt text and a detailed 1 inch logo (all same color)?
Hi Olivia, awesome video. Sorry i might have missed it in this video - How do you create master screen?
You just hit Print on the computer just like any printer!
Fascinating and very nicely presented
Thank you!!
You have such a soothing voice and tone, and super funny that you're waving a duster hahaha
May I ask where you got your machines?
This is great! How many prints can you do in a print run? I am from Canada and want to do this with my work!
Hi, the riso is meant to be an industrial machine so it can pump out thousands of copies if needed!! Stay safe stay healthy!
Is it possible to start a mini printing press with this Printer and how much will it cost and where to buy it
Hi I answer some of your questions here: Q&A: Machines and Cleans | Risograph ruclips.net/video/v7AyM4EMWwM/видео.html
This was so soothing and i really want to try it but I'm a little bit scared to mess it up if it has to be a large order
I think different studios have different minimums, some are smaller quantities than others. If there weren’t covid I would recommend a workshop if you have them in your area. 😭
