What I will say on the free DLC - this is a team that waited years to announce a release date. They are very honest and intentional with what they’re doing. I’m sure they’ve run the numbers and considered the consequences, and they wouldn’t announce free DLC if it wasn’t feasible. Of all the upcoming life sim games, Paralives has the most hype and biggest following. I think they’re going to be just fine.
plus there is a lot of things out there that have free updates when you buy the base core. everyone is so brainwashed by EA and Maxis to think that free doesn't exist and that's so sad. I say that because it's been compared to Sims a million times and not it's own game within the same category. I gave an example last comment, Second Life creators do this. They get money off base sells and people see your avatar using said purchase and they themselves go and buy it and boom the creator still makes a ton of money. I think Paralives will be fine just like what you said because of the game looking as amazing as it does before launch day. It's okay Satch and commentors breathe Free updates do exist and they can still make a lot of money, especially since they themselves boldly states it, they are not worried so you shouldn't be either.
i expect they hope for it to work like stardew valley. that game is buy once and there’s continuous expansions and even a new large updating coming many years after release. i’m excited for this because the dlc culture of today is soul-crushing
I'm honestly happy because this same model is the same with Stardew Valley which is a one time purchase only. If would buy Paralives even if it's 40$ if I know that it's the only purchase that I will be needing to play the game.
I have to agree here, and while I absolutely want to see this team win financially I also have to be realistic and say that The Sims has drained me financially over the past 24 years and purchasing packs and kits and store items and expansions solely to attempt to replicate something similar to myself, my family and friends, and my daily life has been such a terrible experience over the years. I really don’t want to have to fork out a bunch of money simply because I’m a horse lover, a plant lover, and a book lover who is multiracial and lives in a rural farming town, if you get my drift. I totally get everyone wanting the team to profit, I want the same thing. But I don’t think EA’s model works and I would like the simming community to see that other games use much more affordable models and use them well.
I was watching another video on paralives and there was a comment that basically said games dropping without DLC is the norm with updates sporadically from the developers. It’s simmers who think paid DLC EA game model is the norm. So let’s just see if paralives can do the “normal” thing and not just expect the worse because that’s what we’re use to
What is ‘normal’ tho. Different types of games have different norms. Comparing say a ‘Last of Us’ to ‘Overwatch’ would be a fallacy in comparison as far as maintenance needs. You make a sequel to a game like the Last of Us and that makes the studio more money. The sequel. Disney Dreamlight Valley is a good example of a game that made a promise they couldn’t keep when they said ‘no paid DLC’ and then had to go back on it to their own detriment. Technically Sims has free updates, updates are a smaller affair. When you say DLC people think you mean indepth huge additions to the game.
@@TheDawnofVanlife I think paralives can should be able to come up with their version of normal. The Sims/Ea cast a big shadow. Just because their shadow is there doesn't mean it's the correct way or even best way. Right now with the money they've been getting on patreon they must see the value on their product and know they will have people who will buy it because they've been supporting for years. If they go the way of dream light valley that'll be a damn shame. That was tacky and gross. Right now we can only go on their word.
@@YazzyJ718 I think the mistake is thinking that those of us who are skeptical want the EA model. I think most people DO NOT under ANY circumstances want the EA model of locking MAJOR FEATURES behind a paywall. No one wants that, that being said there will come a point where sales slow down .... it's just gonna happen. I think what a lot of us are saying is if Paralives is good, helping sustain it is very important to us. But giving to a patreon every month can get quite expensive, I recently had to drop some patreon support in a few spots not because of the creators i was supporting doing anything wrong, but because my personal circumstances changed. I honestly prefer when people have a kofi because it's a one time gift. But some sort of paid thing, even if it's cosmetic stuff is worth it for content that is GOOD. The problem with Sims 4 is lack luster buggy content and ignored issues over years and years and the dwindling size of expansion packs since the Sims 1/2/3 days. Not to mention the pack teir system they have now that means litterally nothing in the end as the difference between a game and expansion pack is so negligible. It's not a problem that the packs cost money. It's that cost is increasing with content and features for said money decreasing by a lot. And some things should have been free updates instead of overpriced packs. Like Strangerville is a legit side adventure (pay for it, sure) but seasons....jeeze give weather to everyone. Compatablity system...why is that locked in a pack? etc etc Litterally ANY animal. Just add it to the game for everyone. That being said, there was an intentional choice made by the Parralives team and we'll see how it all shakes out. IF they want to find a different way to sustain, I am all for it. I don't think Patreon can sustain them forever, there's lots of reasons people have to leave being a Patreon supporter. And Patreon is a subscription service so over time in ways it's more costly then the flat price of a single purchase video game. If it turns into an elitist culture of insiders who get special privileges after the game is released (in development the model currently makes sense) it could end up feeling worse than fairly paid for DLC available to everyone. Also, once people have the game, it's just expected there will be some people who leave the Patreon. What they have now is no guarantee of what they will have moving into the future or growth once there is a full 1.0 drop.
Sort of like Apple started doing free OS total system upgrades for free (instead of paying $200 for Windows new version…I think they offer free upgrades as well recently…idk, no Windows in our house) as well as providing, for free, fully fleshed out Apple version of Microsoft Office (among many free programs…it’s fully functioning right out of the box.) They make the money in brand loyalty, not licensing for discount versions, and for charging a premium for their products…plus design, packaging and customer service are important (admittedly…well, everything changed after 2020!) They think different. 😁 Maybe it’s something like that?
You forget that Patreon is their main way of monetising this franchise, most people will continue to support with their membership if they're getting more than they are paying with the subscription, and a lot of them will probably get the game for free if they signed up from the start, so any further continuation of the game will very likely rely on these people. You will have both types of clients, and since the game has grown and developed so much thus far, it seems very likely to be sustainable in the long run.
@@EmilyBlueJaye I agree. They might grow but with that so will the tiers on Patreon, and I'm sure they will make it enticing enough with perks that people will probably sign up for.
Actually when you read the patreon posts in one comment Alex said he doesn’t even know if they will keep patreon alive. He said they will be fine with what they get out of the sales for the game. I cannot quote it 100% but something like this was mentioned. I think we can all rely on them doing what they had to from a business perspective. When they say they will be fine, then they will be 😊
@@zissid Exactly. And even if eventually they do decide to charge for any additional content, I doubt that it will be received negatively, but I definitely don't see it happening, just like ConcernedApe, as long as you keep your costs low and you don't rely on servers or any kind of "cloud service" the game purchases will be more than enough to provide a lot of revenue to Alex and the company.
I love the art style of Paralives, it´s so unique and cozy. Edit: I think because they get most of their funding through Patreon, it will work for them not to have paid DLC.
I think having free updates, in opposition to paid DLCs can work. Look at Stardew Valley for example, the game has big free updates every other year and is doing very weel gaining new players and keeping their fanbase loyal and engaged. I agree Paralives shouldn't have said they will "never" have paid DLCs though, because now they can't release any without seeming disingenuous. Let's hope they have a solid business plan and can make it work this way. (Sorry for any mistakes, English is not my first languauge :))
@@lurji Gatekeeping a game just makes less sales for the game, most people buy it on more then one device if its a fun game I know I have stardew valley on pc and switch
I was thinking superficial would be a interesting vibe. Like maybe they’re good at making acquaintances and smozing customers and bosses but struggle to have deep friendships. Maybe the gain more happiness from items or working out to look hot. Maybe they have the option to inquire about initiatives I think it would be fun golddiggin pars!
10:59 I'd love to have one-sided relationships! Like, one sim could hate the other with passion meanwhile that other sim thinks they're friendly with the sim. Imagine the stories to be made with just that feature!
After seeing the gameplay video I can't wait to try out Paralives! It really looks charming and I can't wait to play it. It has that charme that is currently lacking in LBY.
@@LiamC328 Yeah. That news just came out.... Whatever Project Rene is or will be, I won't be supporting it, unless I see real change in the business practices of EA.
In their roadmap they said they'll add more personality trais/quirks etc! I hope they add some negativ ones, some people are just mean or anxious etc so that's be fun :D But also i think the upgradung the pwrsonality means after a while you'll actually get to pick more that would be cool
Just because you are friendly doesn’t mean you are a good care taker. But I agree, having an awkward vibe would be nice. I actually like all the social interactions in S4, I just wish it was organized better and they lasted longer like in S3. Paralives seems like it’s shaping up to be an amazing game
1:11 If you analyze the reveal deep enough, you can actually see in the part where they "upgrade their personalities" a lock icon on 2 other perks next to the serious vibe. So you can most likely pick 3 traits if u upgrade ur para enough!
I do think the vibe, social perk, and talents aren’t limiters but boost. Like there are people who aren’t talented or gifted musicians who still learn how to play an instrument it just might take them longer and involve more effort. Also just because you are generally gloomy doesn’t mean you are with everyone or all the time. I see the vibe as your general ‘vibe’, not that you are incapable of being the other things. I agreee simpler is the way to go with personality builders. I always found the traits system a little too prescriptive and specific and am interested in playing with something different.
Baldur's Gate 3 manages to not have a DLC. Cyberpunk has a lot of free DLC. I think they'll be fine. The production cost will be settled with Patreon/Early Access. Everything else will come with sales. They will sell like sliced bread, I'd say. And when they make their next game, they will have better funding already. I won't touch Sims the second Paralives is in Early Access.
@@TheDawnofVanlifeTrue, but for all we know, Paralives will end up like Project Zomboid and be in early access for a decade 😅 The Indie Stone (which started as a Sims mod team!) gets by just fine - they’re even expanding their team to provide more free content. When you don’t have 100s of employees, a couple million in sales can stretch for a long time.
@@tetramputectureI honestly don't want them to have to stretch tho. Maybe cause I do budgeting, but I am like 12 people is A LOT actually to give everyone a decent salary, provide equipment, pay all the bills it takes to run a studio. Sure it's not EA level of cost and shareholders but it's no small bill that can be sustained in nothing for 12 whole people live comfortably and be able to do their job. EA could afford to give out free packs all year and not hesitate to pay anyone, Stardew updates are also very spaced out and irregular. What many of us are saying is we are happy to pay for that which is worth the money to expand the game. Especially to make it the best full life Sim ever. Stardew deals with ONE aspect of life, farming pretty much. Project Zomboiid also has one narrow focus on being a survival game (great game, this isn't a criticism). A full life Sim offering us maybe a side adventure as an add on is almost giving us another game within the game and as long as they don't charge for things like adding school or an attraction system or weather (like those being free Updates, not DLC, Updates) makes sense....but I am happy to pay for a Safari adventure pack with a whole new map and maybe a gear pack specific to that adventure addon. This far into the future, after 1.0 is released not during Early Access. Cause the work a massive adventure addon is different from adding a few new recipes and a rice cooker and locking that behind the paywall of an apartment builder pack (looking at you EA). 😒
I feel like as long as the basis of the game is well done, that’s all we need! I think of the Sims 2 which is pretty much a universally beloved game, but even still there are so so so many mods out there that change all sorts of aspects of the game. Not because it’s a bad game, but because it’s a sandbox and we’re all fairly particular about exactly how we want things to go. If Paralives nails the basics, modders and players will tweak it to our liking as needed, with the underlying structure being the perfect base.
So I've been playing Sims 1 lately, and whats funny is some of what you talk about here is in Sims 1! There are little symbols under the relationship meter and there is a soft pink indicating interest, and the higher the 'interest' the more the crush. You can't build relationships fast in Sims 1, you can get a high friendship but that interest or crush has to build over time or they won't accept any romantic overtures. It does worry me that they already said "never" to paid DLC, because of the reasons you have stated. I feel they needed to have kept that option open depending on how well the game does. And yeah, small packs with unique LOOKING items rather than unique gameplay can be in little optional paid packs, if I really like a game I will do that to support it.
I agree with Satch paying for expansions and DLC isnt a bad thing. What's important is that we actually get what we pay for and that it's functional. This company isn't as big yet and selling us DLC would be a great way to further fund their game.
as an alternate to job rabbit hole i think it would be cute to put in a mini game. and maybe to save on resources it would be a similar minigame across similar jobs and there could be like 3-5 different ones total. like a bejeweled clone that's coffee themed could be a good one. and there's an option to opt out. and how well you do impacts your performance increase
Yeah, it always bugged me about the Sims that guitar/piano/violin etc were all different skills. I started off as a bassist and I picked up guitar very easily (and piano is basically the starting point; if you can play the piano you can basically pick up any instrument way more easily).
Honestly that was kinda an improvement as in sims 1 and 2 with enough creativity skill you could play piano as easily as you could write a book or paint. Like you could build all you creativity points painting and pick up an instriment for the first time and just be good. And that made no sense but the creative skill was a catchall for everything under the sun that one called ‘creative’. But if Paralives had found a happy medium between the two extremes, that would be awesome.
@@TheDevos1 Yeah, what I mean is that if you already know how to play the piano you'll have an easier time learning guitar down the line if you want to.
I genuinely think the personality system struck the perfect balance. The focused simplicity allows for imagination and depth jn gameplay. I think the combination of vibes, social perk, talents, and sleeping/cleaning habits, actually creates an unspoken personality for the Para. And they can apply them throughout gameplay, way better than they could if the devs had to juggle 50 different personality traits. Sims 4 is a good example of how that went wrong. The only thing i wish was added is a fear system.
I don’t mind paying for dlc as long as it’s worth it and truly impacts my game I bought almost every sims 3 pack because it brung so much life into the game it truly felt impactful in a great way ❤❤
There's crushes in the sims I think they come in high school years. Is shows up in sim panel and in the moodlets. Idk if it shows much in actual gameplay/interactions tho 😭
Yeah it just gives your sim an embarrassed or flirty moodlet when you’re near them and it shows in the relationship panel for that person that you have a crush on them. So yeah, it doesn’t do much I guess.
God i hate that they hid this behind 40 bucks 😭 But also i think this is also much cooler here because of the multiple and flexible relationship Labels!
The thing that annoys me about the crush system in the Sims is that they'll have a crush as soon as they interact with someone new. Like, huh?? How are you gonna suddenly develop a crush on 3 different classmates on the same day? 😭
Its kinda weird to claim all characters in the Sims games look the same, when Paralives has just shown us a few custom made characters. The4y have presets and sliders, just like the Sims does. So with more and more characters created, of course they will start to look similar at some point. In Paralives as well as in Sims. Mods will definitely change that anyway, tho.
@@cryingwatercolours I have a sims 3 game that has been going for 3-4 generations, and eventually it gets to the point where all the sims become the same. Like all the women in my town have the same haircut. I think there are mods for this.
Honestly, I think cause this project is crowdfunded, whether they make a massive return or not is not a HUGE issue compared to a project funded by a investors/shareholders. So really *any* sales they make will be a profit, assuming they're not spending over the crowdfunding income in production. Then considering that they're not EA, they do not have EA's astronomical overheads in the form of thousands of employees, literal real estate in the form of office spaces, advertising and extremely money hungry CEO's and shareholders. A crowdfunded company/project does not rely so heavily on shareholders being happy. Also remember that games having paid DLC is a relatively new concept. There are many a successful game studios of old that released single games, then used the profit from that single game sale to fund their next project. That's how it worked. And it still does work like that, but companies like EA are just taking such an astronomically high amount of money in, while cutting every cost they can to deliver the product. That was not normal. Stardew valley is a very sucessful single purchase game, with only free updates. Safe to say the dev is doing well.
I am loving the simplistic gameplay honestly. I find with all the options in sims it gets too much and as you said, confusing. Also, as a 3D artist myself, I adore the art style of Paralives. It is what grabbed my attention first. I am very excited for this game to come out.
I don't think the issue is whether or not sims (or paras) need to have "depth". Yes, there is beauty in simplicity, but in a video game like this, if there aren't more way to create a sim/para, then every sim/para is going to be the same. It's one of the biggest issues Sims players have: the sims are very two dimensional because we don't have an in-depth personality customization. We can choose 3 traits for our sims and that's it. And half the time those traits don't even do anything to impact gameplay. Now imagine Paralives characters since Paralives has even less personality customization. Yes there are more personality categories, but not a lot of options. 4 "quirks" or whatever their called, can only choose 1 vibe, 1 social perk, 1 talent........ Sims 2 and 3 blew personality traits out of the water. It wasn't "in-depth" like how Satch is trying to describe it, but it did make Sims feel a little more different from each other. When I make sims in Sims 4, every single one just feels like a carbon copy of the other slapped with a different outfit on. It doesn't look like Paralives will have much variation with such a limited personality creator. You could probably get like.... I don't know.... three different Paras out of it? And just like Satch said before: what about people who want to make paras that are both serious but also peaceful? Or a para that is both good at making friends but is also good at being alone? If we're only limited to making 1 or 2 choices, there won't be much variation available to play with and it get real boring real quick.
I think the thing with traits vs personality points is traits are very on the nose, being generally creative could go a lot of different ways and it adds more depth then 1000 traits and five billion "conversation" topics that are added to the unending pie menu. With much less (and personality points), the Sims in Sims 2 were much more unique with way more personality. I think "more" and "depth" are disconnected and that there is already more depth in Paralives from this then Sims with all it's DLC and traits. I think the mistake has been thinking adding more to an already broken system will change anything. Ultimately I find, for example, all friendly interactions will utimately progress to the same end game. Where as if the prompt is to talk about working out while we are working out, where even a flirt is about the situation of working out vs generic from the flirt pie choices it's way more immersive. To be creative and have my Para pick up a camera as opposed to me selecting photography in the creation of them feels more immersive. Paralives with the situational conversations feeling more naturally prompted already has depth to me. And the personality system seems like a source system more likely to naturally grow as the Para exist vs me arbitrarily setting hardcore CAS traits.
It seems like the way the interactions are set up they feel like they'll progress more organically. Sims 4 feels very player directed only to me. It's nice if you want to control the narrative, but if you like some randomness (like I do) its not really there if you play vanilla.
You don’t care about the intricacies of certain features but I love it. Sometimes I want to talk to a sim for different reasons. I’m not against the simple talk like how it is in paralives, but the detailed stuff in sims helps with story telling.
9:13 I actually care about Sims 4 dialogue thingy (because I usually play with a story/route in mind) but I also would love to just play the damn game organically, less textbox for me to read.
So funny one of the first things that came to mind was that the game is a bit like a mobile version of the Sims and then you mentioned near the end that other people were saying it too. For me, it's not because of the graphics but because of the gameplay. Since there are fewer choices to make compared to the Sims (which is too "open" so to speak), Paralives looks like it operates more simply than the Sims, which kinda makes it perfect as a mobile game. Not sure how much more in-depth the rest of the game is, though.
I love the vibe! I do hope they add some kind of negative option with the personality design. I need to be bad a something too. I also miss not being able to do something. It look like now you can exercise 10 times in a row while being very tired
So far I love it, I think the only thing I'm not cool with is the circles around the feet. But it's early and a lot can change, and who knows, it might grow on me. That's my only issue, the rest is on point. As far as the free dlc, I also agree it's not realistic and I would not be offended if that changes in the future.
I like their conversation system. In the sims if you have a lot of packs the pie menu become too bloated. Sometime i just want to select talk instead of chose what theme they should talk.
I agree, however I think the original commenter maybe meant the animation and audio. It does seem quite samey at the moment, in the sims 2 the conversations were very expressive even though there were only a handful of interaction options. It's still early days though, of course. :)
you can see later in the trailer (14:06) that you can unlock more "vibes slots" at first i was also very unsure about them never wanting to do paid dlcs but i've seen some good arguments for why it can work, for example they don't need to keep a giant studio running and they can keep their patreon going where they'd show what they're working on similar to now. they're not doing this for the money but out of passion so as long as they make enough to keep going it should be fine and of course if paralives does get very popular and the sales alone will absolutely be enough but that is hard to predict
I was pretty hesitant about this game in the beginning, but oh my goodness the relationship building is exactly what I've been collecting mods to achieve
Okay, this is how I saw personalities. Phisique, Mind, Creativity, and Charisma affect skill gain in certain categories. Vibe affects mood. Social perks affect (wow, it wasn't obvious at all) conversations and social interactions. Talents affect hobby preferences an maybe some social interaction. And lifestyles... I don't think it's really hard to understand them. @Paralives am I right?
I think that it's not even more simple but just more realistic to how people naturally grow their personality. Like just because you're more physically capable doesn't mean working out or sports has to be a main thing of your personality
I and many other people don’t really have issue with paying for expansion packs. Its when they’re overpriced like with The Sims 4 and then the base game becomes neglected is when the issues come in.
If the Paralives team says there will be no payd dlc that means they reaaaly tought about it, because for those who have been in their discord server for a while know thatfrom the begging they said that dlc could be a thing they would do, but it would be, if there was to be any, very few and for vvery optional things.
re: paid expansion packs and such, i think you're forgetting that paid DLC is relatively a new concept within the world of gaming. paying for a game once and having all the content used to be the norm until big corpos decided to find a way to squeeze even more money out of players through the same product. i think it's great that paralives is going against that, and since they're a very small team, the income they get from sales alone should be plenty to sustain them imo. the same thing happened with stardew valley. i can only hope more and more games begin moving back in this direction.
Grumpy and serious do not have to go hand in hand no. A grumpy person can make sarcastic quips, be un-serious, and just be a general downer about everything. Not take anything seriously and things like that. A serious person will take life seriously, and they might not even be negative about everything. They might have a positive outlook on life even if they look at it in a more matter-of-fact way.
agree with you 100%. I thought the same thing when I saw "Paralives will never have paid DLCs". it's very admirable but also risky, cause now they have to honour it. I really don't want them to have to go back on their word down the line and everyone's gonna pull up this first trailer. it's clear they're trying to go in the opposite direction of what EA has done with the Sims cause they've seen the uproar in the community when everything is hidden behind a paywall. that being said tho, I'm so excited for early access & am hoping for the best ❤
Project Zomboid is a game that you never have to buy DLC for, but is constantly making huge evolutions while being extremely open to the modding community. So it is something that can go well.
Yeah, I just want my sims to have consistent personality so they feel more like a person (without me having to force it or fill the rest of the details with my imagination) rather than a slot machine blob.
i think people are really generalizing the DLCs idea, like- i think what they mean is that any game necessity WILL be free, but they might have festive/festival/event stuff that they might add as a side purchase? if not it would be a good idea, and since they would have the reputation of being completely free more people would be inclined to buying the once a year sale you know what i mean?
As much as I want there to be an EA killer; I'd be very surprised if this takes off or lasts, as one thing that made the Sims series very popular was the humour and this just looks devoid.
Have you never heard about free DLCs??? And I dont think they make this game for the money. They make it because the love it and they can. So it will be more important for the DEVs how it will be reseived rather than money.
I hope that sooner than later they send beta versions to youtubers/streamers so we can watch them play. I haven't been playing any games recently busy with school and life in general. I'd love for some of these games to come out and be my new obsession. Waiting with fingers crossed. For me though, I don't know how interested I'll be in base games since I'm spoiled and play with so many expansion packs. Only very basic features being avaliable in general may prove boring at first. I am hoping that those together cards really spice the game up. Also I like being able to add pillows on couches and this type of attention to detail in build mode, but the build mode doesn't look that appealing to me. Reminds me of online games I played as a kid. I wish it felt more real. It feels too "young" if that makes sense.
i would be kind of sad if influencers got to play the game first. we’ve all been waiting for years for this game to come out, letting some people play for weeks or months before we can access it doesn’t seem fair
i totally agree about the social menu. i see where they were going with giving us more social interactions but it’s kind of pointless if the sims are just going to be talking like normal. it’s more storytelling in a sense but at the same time such a hassle. i want them to just be able to ‘chat’ and that be it. idc to search through 15 different friendly interactions. 9:01
the gameplay showcase made me change my mind about Paralives. I used to think this was gonna be the ultimate Sims-killer, but now that we've seen what the gameplay feels like, i no longer think that. Not because i don't think Paralives will be successful, on the contrary, i think it'll be EXTREMELY successful, but i think Paralives is going for a completely different vibe from The Sims. While it has the same core gameplay loop as The Sims, it feels a lot closer to Townscaper, Stardew Valley or Tiny Glade. It's a Sims-like that plays like a tiny, cosy indie game. For what we've seen, it doesn't have that quirkiness, that zaniness, that over-the-top weird and wacky feel that The Sims (especially Sims 1, 2 and 3) have. That being said, it's also not a hyper-realistic simulator like Life by You or InZoi. It strikes that perfect balance between a cartoony, over the top *game* and a more realistic *simulator* That being said, i think that you'll appreciate Paralives a heck of a lot more if you're more about the cozy and creative side of The Sims, rather than its crazy, wacky side. And because of this, i think Paralives can 100% coexist with The Sims, rather than completely replace it.
I’m cool with no DLC, but I’m really surprised they’re going with a free expansion route as well. It’s a breath of fresh-air, honestly, but I would be totally fine with paying for expansions with no paid DLC.
I can't wait for this, so excited that they are not trying to replicate the Sims but putting a different spin on so many aspects. I hope they charge us for expansions as I am ready to give them all my money.
On the skills - that was one of my biggest issues with the Sims where you can master Gourmet Cooking, but then burn down the kitchen making cookies. Very happy to see this. On the general conversations there was a mod in Sims 4 that added a "try to make friends" option that would just... try to make friends. It was great, and if that's the direction most conversations take I'll be happy.
A true aspie approach is big five + iq, which I'd be down for - That being said, I like the Sims 3 personality traits. They give you a good idea of what that sim is supposed to be like.
I think since they don't rely on modding too much, they'll probably just do some updates and then start working on a sequel in the same engine, but with grander ambitions. That's how games used to work, and unless they intend on expanding their team and becoming a big game studio, they don't really need to earn the kind of money that the sims does.
I'd love to see angry or mean paras in the neigbourhood or at work aswell just like in real life. In the sims it feels like they are way too nice in general unless i really press them. Some people are just mean in general and it would improve the gameplay imo
I was hoping you’d do a review! I love your thoughts and opinions and you have amazing ideas! I personally think angry and grumpy are very different and like that they’re separate :). I’m a serious person but not grumpy. You do make a good point in that they can overlap, but maybe that can be something they can work on. I’m excited that they have this so far. It’s different to the Sims (and I’m hoping it’s better already) and I’m ready for it! You are so right regarding the chat! I end up just clicking the same things the whole time. It would be interesting like this depending on their personalities too, see if any clashes arise.
Kids as well as toddlers and babies will be in early access, or at least they are on the roadmap to be in early access at the start of it. I don't think they've mentioned teens yet.
Well, grumpy basically means hot-headed or negative, while serious is being stoic and not showing much emotion. And overjoyed just means happy, whereas energetic is more of physical thing where you're hyper. Not everyone who is serious is grumpy, and not everyone who is energetic is happy. I think they are pretty specific.
Yeh it looks like the sims fb game. And the mobile version where you when you send a sim to work. They can work short, medium and long shifts. Or when making friends within different skill/ hobby sets. And when you start a new level it shows your 3 card options
Regarding the free DLC's. Remember that The Sims playerbase is used to turning their wallets inside out for DLC and often not used to how other games do it. People would naturally be scared to commit to more than one franchise. What they are trying to do is to chomp at this absolutely massive playerbase, and the more they can "convert" to Paralives the better.
Sims definitely don't look all the same. You can use CAS and make them completely unique and some people are very very talented when they create new sims. I don't know if paralives will be the perfect simulation game but they really need to improve graphics a little bit in my opinion
I completely agree with the DLC point on this one. Even as a person who doesn't have a lot of money to drop on stuff, as long as it's small purchases for things that don't affect gameplay at all I wouldn't mind. For example, like a little themed sort of lookbook type deal that adds some swatches/appearances for stuff or follows an aesthetic that players might want for like $5-$10 or something would be really fun, and they wouldn't have to do a ton of work on them for animations and coding and stuff and focus on improving the game over time instead
In terms of the interactions i think it’s mainly useful for story tellers? If something specific happened to their sim , they can find a specific response or ‘animation’ for the story
I mean…you don’t have to be a storyteller to get tired of repetition. If every interaction looked and felt the same, interactions would become meaningless and quite boring to see played out. None of us interact the same way to everything, so I doubt we would want our Paras to.
It would be excusable if they had different animations. But since the Sims 4 is allergic to new animations, they're pretty much all the exact same option and just pointless clutter
09:12 I feel like I would care more about the different chat/talk options if they actually had a bigger meaningful impact on the conversation and relationships.

All This progress just over 4 years is really impressive
I mean, it is possible. Eric Barone started as a one-man band making Stardew Valley.
Paralives is officially gonna be the Sims 5 replacement for me. I'm betting everything on this project.
But I don’t think EA’s model works and I would like the simming community to see that other games use much more affordable models and use them well.
it probably means the game itself will be expensive, which is fine by me if it remains fun and playable for years to come
I was watching another video on paralives and there was a comment that basically said games dropping without DLC is the norm with updates sporadically from the developers. It’s simmers who think paid DLC EA game model is the norm. So let’s just see if paralives can do the “normal” thing and not just expect the worse because that’s what we’re use to
Think same 🫶🏻
What is ‘normal’ tho.
This is like if sims 2 gets the actual sequel vibes.
exactlyyy my thought. this feels so much like the sims 2 with the create a personality and relationships
Completely 😍😍
Right???? Life by you is giving the Sims 3 sequel i Always wanted and paralives feels Like a Sims 2 sequel
Yesssss!!!!! I love Sims 2 so much…I need to figure out how to get it to play on my Mac!
@@mollymollie6048 the app store may still have it!
Yes. And they're a SMALL team. 12 I think? They need far less $$$ than a large AAA game to support their creators.
I hope it really works like that, otherwise they'll have to backtrack and that would be a pity and cause loss of confidence.
I definitely agree with awkward being a good and useable trait! Some people just have that awkwardness in them and it can rly make for fun gameplay.
I love the art style of Paralives, it´s so unique and cozy.
Edit: I think because they get most of their funding through Patreon, it will work for them not to have paid DLC.
Also they could make merch and stuff in the future
they could definitely amp up the patreon after release, for example with polls on what features people want.
(Sorry for any mistakes, English is not my first languauge :))
but they also need to be open to porting their game to other consoles so other poeple can enjoy it like stardew valley has

It has that charme that is currently lacking in LBY.
awkward would be such a relevant trait that could truly impact gameplay
The game looks great. I know that I will not be supporting S5... but all the new life simulators coming out look way better than S4 or S5.
There will be no EA's Sims 5. Paralives IS our Sims 5.
@@LiamC328 Yeah. That news just came out.... Whatever Project Rene is or will be, I won't be supporting it, unless I see real change in the business practices of EA.
In their roadmap they said they'll add more personality trais/quirks etc! I hope they add some negativ ones, some people are just mean or anxious etc so that's be fun :D
But also i think the upgradung the pwrsonality means after a while you'll actually get to pick more that would be cool
Alsooo, would be interesting if they played their character through childhood, they may be more deep personality wise? Does that make sense?🤔
What I wanna see is more conflicts and more character flaws. Something to make everyone alive
This.
Yes! This is my big worry about Paralives. Everything is so aesthetic and perfect, whereas I play Sims for the drama and chaos.
Wow good catch!
I seems so! I think that's really cool, because then we actually have Something to Work towards c:
Yeah, there was a bit where Anisa got to have an evolution to her serious vibe and could either become studious or hardworking 14:06 for reference
As a Polish person, I feel recognised and acknowledged when you mentioned Polish chavs 🤣🤣🤣 I've been dreaming of seeing a Sims pack like this hahahah
The Sims 4 Blokowisko Life
Baldur's Gate 3 manages to not have a DLC.
To be fair, BG3 just got out of early access like this past year. In early access you don’t do DLC. You update until release as that’s the point.
Isn’t Cyberpunk super buggy?
@@Spooky-Sara compared to the Sims it runs smooth AF.
If Paralives nails the basics, modders and players will tweak it to our liking as needed, with the underlying structure being the perfect base.
this game is so charming, i cant wait for it. it's just cozy and comforting, i adore the art style
I mean maybe for strings, but you should not have skill in Guitar if you only play piano…
@@TheDevos1 Yeah, what I mean is that if you already know how to play the piano you'll have an easier time learning guitar down the line if you want to.
I love the graphics. I love the hand drawn art. I'm looking forward to it. Maybe more so than LBY. I will be getting both.
I love the build mode alot
No dlc doesn't mean no microtransactions. Just as you said, "no impact on gameplay" aesthetic drops.
I don’t mind paying for dlc as long as it’s worth it and truly impacts my game I bought almost every sims 3 pack because it brung so much life into the game it truly felt impactful in a great way ❤❤
I can’t believe we finally got a release year after following them for 5 years
There's crushes in the sims I think they come in high school years.
Yeah but only teens get them. Apprently EA thinks adults can't get crushes 😭😭
The facts crushes are behind a 40 dollar paywall sucks so bad that’s like a base game feature 😭
God i hate that they hid this behind 40 bucks 😭
But also i think this is also much cooler here because of the multiple and flexible relationship Labels!
Sims 1 and 2 The Sims look different from one another whereas in Sims 3 and 4 all the Sims have a certain vibe to their face.
@@morganandwongYes totally! That's what I liked about the Sims 2. It wasn't as airbrushed
I love the direction they're going with this, it's simple and complex enough, a good balance 👍
I'm glad I finally found someone else who said it
9:13 I actually care about Sims 4 dialogue thingy (because I usually play with a story/route in mind) but I also would love to just play the damn game organically, less textbox for me to read.
As far as the free dlc, I also agree it's not realistic and I would not be offended if that changes in the future.
i like the sims interactions idk how to feel about the conversation in paralives
I like their conversation system. In the sims if you have a lot of packs the pie menu become too bloated. Sometime i just want to select talk instead of chose what theme they should talk.
yea but i like the little specific options, i guess i ll just wait to early acess to have an opinion lol@@augusto7681
I agree, however I think the original commenter maybe meant the animation and audio.
It does seem quite samey at the moment, in the sims 2 the conversations were very expressive even though there were only a handful of interaction options.
It's still early days though, of course. :)
you can see later in the trailer (14:06) that you can unlock more "vibes slots"
at first i was also very unsure about them never wanting to do paid dlcs but i've seen some good arguments for why it can work, for example they don't need to keep a giant studio running and they can keep their patreon going where they'd show what they're working on similar to now. they're not doing this for the money but out of passion so as long as they make enough to keep going it should be fine and of course if paralives does get very popular and the sales alone will absolutely be enough but that is hard to predict
The graphics reminds me more of Life Is Strange than Sims Mobile, so I associate it more like story-driven and I love it!
18:07 I agree! Having cosmetic DLCs could be a good way for future loyal players to keep supporting the game without it being scummy.
That trait attribution mechanism make me thing of some role playing games.
That game look pretty interesting. I do like the graphic.
@Paralives am I right?
I hope they don't forget to add burglars!
I hope that Paralives has supernatural content, that is my favourite thing in the Sims games
If the Paralives team says there will be no payd dlc that means they reaaaly tought about it, because for those who have been in their discord server for a while know thatfrom the begging they said that dlc could be a thing they would do, but it would be, if there was to be any, very few and for vvery optional things.
Oh I am obsessed already ahhhh this makes me so happy!!
re: paid expansion packs and such, i think you're forgetting that paid DLC is relatively a new concept within the world of gaming. paying for a game once and having all the content used to be the norm until big corpos decided to find a way to squeeze even more money out of players through the same product. i think it's great that paralives is going against that, and since they're a very small team, the income they get from sales alone should be plenty to sustain them imo. the same thing happened with stardew valley. i can only hope more and more games begin moving back in this direction.
I’m very excited !! I can’t wait to see more of build mode tbh
agree with you 100%.
Early Bird 🤝🏼 Night Owl
@@rummagingchaos Maybe unfair for patreon members, but for non-paying people, this is very standard to let influencers play first.
i totally agree about the social menu. i see where they were going with giving us more social interactions but it’s kind of pointless if the sims are just going to be talking like normal. it’s more storytelling in a sense but at the same time such a hassle. i want them to just be able to ‘chat’ and that be it. idc to search through 15 different friendly interactions. 9:01
i wished i put something similar to the sims 2 memori system because that truly bringed an extra layer of deep and story
Satch being on the spectrum makes so much sense (in a good way, I’m also autistic)
the gameplay showcase made me change my mind about Paralives. It strikes that perfect balance between a cartoony, over the top *game* and a more realistic *simulator*
That being said, i think that you'll appreciate Paralives a heck of a lot more if you're more about the cozy and creative side of The Sims, rather than its crazy, wacky side. And because of this, i think Paralives can 100% coexist with The Sims, rather than completely replace it.
This looks really fun!
I just want a direct sims competitor with goofy non realistic thing like Aliens and other goofy stuff like time traveling
I’m cool with no DLC, but I’m really surprised they’re going with a free expansion route as well. It’s a breath of fresh-air, honestly, but I would be totally fine with paying for expansions with no paid DLC.
I love how the graphic paralives look it’s a lot better than sims in my opinion ❤
A true aspie approach is big five + iq, which I'd be down for -
That being said, I like the Sims 3 personality traits. They give you a good idea of what that sim is supposed to be like.
I wish they’d think about adding goofy/whacky aspects. I really dislike super realistic games.
I also appreciate the level of complexity regarding personality and relationships - very focused on a few very characterful choices
Games forget to make their scenes look like paintings, paralives doesn't forget
Night Owl=Early Bird
Yeh it looks like the sims fb game. And the mobile version where you when you send a sim to work. They can work short, medium and long shifts. Or when making friends within different skill/ hobby sets. And when you start a new level it shows your 3 card options
Regarding the free DLC's. Remember that The Sims playerbase is used to turning their wallets inside out for DLC and often not used to how other games do it. People would naturally be scared to commit to more than one franchise. What they are trying to do is to chomp at this absolutely massive playerbase, and the more they can "convert" to Paralives the better.
I hope we get the option to be "bad at" for example the Para can be good with family but bad with romance?
I'm too eager for this game thanks for reviewing some of the footage!
Sims definitely don't look all the same. You can use CAS and make them completely unique and some people are very very talented when they create new sims. I don't know if paralives will be the perfect simulation game but they really need to improve graphics a little bit in my opinion
Definitely the one I look forward to the most. (I'm finally free from EA)
“You can’t recreate a human in pixels” *stares silently*
In the sims 4 did anyone realises how insignificant all those social options In friendly are?
It would be excusable if they had different animations. But since the Sims 4 is allergic to new animations, they're pretty much all the exact same option and just pointless clutter
@@dundee6402 that’s the exact realisation I came to. There is no point to any of them except maybe the actions like cloud gazing
09:12 I feel like I would care more about the different chat/talk options if they actually had a bigger meaningful impact on the conversation and relationships.
