This is, by far, the best instructional video for the R. You explain everything logically and i cant say enough good things about this video--I keep going back to it for reference!
Great teacher, Mike. You are. Doing the photography community. A great. Service, sharing your knowledge. Unselfishly. So we all can grow professionally.
Thanks for a great, informative lesson. So nice to have a serious presentation with no gimmicks, no "funny hats" and "yo - how's it goin bro"! My kit arrives next week and thanks to you, i already know a lot about it.
You are one my idols frfr. Every time I buy a new camera, I run looking for you. i know you will have a complete breakdown on it. You are always on your A+ Game, and have been for years.
Thank you very much for this tutorial! I learned how to use my M50 and get off of the dummy mode with your other video. Now I'm moving up to the EOS R.
I have the EOS-R on order and was a little nervous as the UI is very different to that of my 70D or various friends' 5Ds, which have many more buttons. Looking for a tutorial, I found this one and I am knocked out. This is really very well done and very complete. And it even looks like I should be able to do all things I need without excessive button pushing, although I shall have to learn some new procedures! A great job. Very many thanks.
Brilliant in-depth tutorial on this camera. I've had mine only for a week now, but am referring back to this guide again & again. Thanks for this excellent walk through. Greetings from a soggy England.
thank you so much man, I rented one and I've only ever used an old af digital camera from the early 2000s, and the amount of buttons and stuff on this one was overwhelming
I know im asking randomly but does anybody know of a tool to get back into an Instagram account? I stupidly lost my account password. I appreciate any tricks you can offer me!
@Julian Oscar thanks for your reply. I got to the site thru google and im waiting for the hacking stuff now. Seems to take a while so I will get back to you later with my results.
Wow. Wow and wow. Thank you for painstakingly taking us through the camera functionality, end to end, in one sitting. Kudos to you, because you have presented very well. I already own Canon EOS 5D Mark IV, and Canon EOS 6D Mark II. I would say this: - even though I’m already familiar with the Canon menu hierarchy and drill down - (especially the 6D Mark II, which is very identical with the R) Despite my familiarity, I have found your tutorial very very useful. I am waiting for my R, and I more or less know what functions to change or keep. And if I get stuck, thanks to you, I know where to check. Your tutorial. 👏
These are on sale for $1600 on sale right now - I picked one up... if you're just doing boring landscape duty on a tripod = probably the best affordable/smart buy for Canon full frame...
You can change to video mode by just pressing the record button. It will then start filming in the video mode you last used. So no need to switch to video mode first every time.
This is true if you are ready to record. If you want to change settings it must be done while recording, as once it ends it reverts back to stills mode.
Michael, thank you for the excellent tutorial. I have been a Canon SLRs user for close to 40 years (an FTBn was my first, a 7D my latest), and my new EOS R just arrived moments ago. Will be opening it on Christmas Day. Obtained it from B&H and included the EOS-R adapter and an accessory kit for free. Can't wait to try out all of my EF lenses on it.
good tutorial!! The only thing I would like to see better is the eye tracking function with people, because the photo we already know is the easiest for the camera. In addition almost no one has done a review of the reliability and speed of eye tracking in real situation. it would be very good: D
I made it to the end and too bad that there is only two native lens but you do have the adapter. Good to watch and learn something about the camera just in case I do come across one and play with one. Thank you, Michael, for the training course.
Thanks greatly for this. I have had my R for about 2 mths and I keep coming back to this ( I'm a slow learner!) It helps to get the most out of the camera. ( From Corona locked down Australia- the virus- not the beer)
Really great and informative video. I appreciate the time and effort you have put into making this encyclopedia of useful information. I wish you had turned super message on, wanted to send a little thank you.
I salute you bruh for taking the time to make this video. I never seen anything liek this before. It's like a real visual manual. This is what the big companies should do for us. The lazy rich bastards.
Hi Michael, great Tutorial.. if you put the time 00:00 at top of the timecode list (description) and then save the video you can have the sections also selectable on the playbar bar. Hope it helps :)
Wow what a thorough walk through. I've already solved 2 of my problems watching this, so many thanks for a great video. This video is book now marked. One question, when zooming your screen or EVF for focus fine tuning I can see you can increase to 5x or 10x, is there anyway to just zoom to 100pc?
Wow! Such a good video! Thank you!! I'm and artist and bought this camera to shoot my artwork for hi resolution digital printing a couple years ago. Could you share a some parameters / suggestions that would be your "go to starting point" if you were shooting artwork? I come in as close as I can and if the art is bigger than 15" square or so I usually stitch together 2 shots in photoshop to get better resolution. I also try to light as evenly as possible. but camera setting have been a guessing game...100 iso? F 2.8? camera raw? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Hi Michael, thank you for your great video! I have EOS R and I used take a shoot with autofocus. when I took the picture I saw different color at my focus point , sometimes more darker or brighter. May I know is something wrong with my EOS R or is it the features? and how to disable it? is somebody here has the same problem? Thank you so much Michael!
If anyone would know it seems you might, so worth a shot: Timecode setting; is there a way to have the timecode start at 0:00 (all zeros) on all clips recorded on a SD card? It's frustrating to have a continual updated timecode when I import in FCPX as I review my clips in Quicktime and make a note of the time (in seconds) where I'd like to have my in and out points. I keep coming back to this tutorial many times, good work.
Thank you very much!! Great explanation, very educational and fruitful!! Really liked it, learned a great deal, and of course subscribed. Looking forward to more!!
Excellent review on the Canon R I would like to purchase the first volume, because I just invested about 2,000.$ on this Camera and don’t know where to start Please Help. Thanks
Thanks for this video tutorial. This eos r that was delivered yesterday, is so much better than my 80d for anything other than wildlife. I shoot raw only and do lens corrections in lightroom classic. Also, I have had great success using the dropper for white balance correction and use awb-w for my 80d and assuming eos r allows it. Oh, by the way, my firmware is 1.2.
Hello 👋 which app did you use to edit your video it sounds awesome 👏🏼 I just recently purchased my canon camera 📷 EOS R and I have no idea how to use it even though I just watched your video it is still very confusing to me 🤔! One last question why every time i récord a vídeo it sounds so ugly like if I have a microphone 🎤 but it sounds annoying to your ears it’s that normal ??
The R uses a cropped part of the sensor when shooting 4K video, Which is about the size of a PSE what this means is that you can totally use a PSE lenses which are less expensive to shoot 4K video on the R
This is, by far, the best instructional video for the R. You explain everything logically and i cant say enough good things about this video--I keep going back to it for reference!
Very detailed and helpful. I recommend watching this at 1.75x speed though
Just got the R. What a wonderful overview in DETAIL on the new controls. FANTASTIC job.

Michael, like many happy snappers I didn't read the camera manual, I learnt a lot from your video. Cheers Johnny M. St Helens UK
Very well done. Just purchased my EOS R and you saved me from reading the manual. I love all the features.
