@ 8:40 you say you can’t get her to step up, and she immediately ran out of her cage to step up 😂! I get it! I have a severe macaw that has always loved me, but it was my own fear that kept me away. It took me 15yrs to touch him, and it was only when my mother went to sell him and he flew to me for help, I picked him up shaking and he just hugged my for the longest time. Now he is my bird, and I’m the only one who can touch him!
I just got a Rescue severe! He’s not a fan of stepping up just yet, but we’re working on our bond as well. He came from an abusive home, so it’s been a slow slow slow process. But I love him so much! Thank you for this video!
What a pretty bird. The fact she flies to you and climbs up on your shoulder when you're on the couch says she recognizes you're a safe person, a treat giving person, and a caring person. As she gains more and more trust in you she will decide you're " her" person and she will bond with you for life. That is a beautiful thing. You're an awesome human being Suzy Q. The love and care you have for your various critters is so evident. Seriously looking forward to many more updates and videos on Ms Sophie. 👍💕👍
She's stunning Suzy. A wonderful life long relationship that of course will grow and solidify as you build trust between the two of you. Please keep us posted with regular updates? Thanks for the video.
I watched this late at night in bed and I loved it but I did not comment. I love this bird so much I love all birds I grew up with a farther who had over 160 different types of birds at one stage out on the bush farm The good old days
Hi Suzy!!! I ABSOLUTELY LOVE Sophie!!! She's beautiful!!! Bird's are AMAZING!!! I have ALWAYS had Budgies!!! Lots of fun!!! IM so happy for you!!! You will have many years of enjoyment with her!!! Have a wonderful weekend!!!!
I would highly recommend the Hormone course by Birdtricks. Lots of awesome info! Covering her cage can be a major trigger for hormonal behavior. Once I created a separate sleep area in a quiet room where my birds could truly get uninterrupted 12+ hours of sleep instead of covering them in the same room as the TV and people it helped tremendously! The sleep cage does not have to be big. Then in the morning you bring her back out to her main cage. She is stunning by the way! ❤️
Does she have a nightlight? I know that sounds strange but my coworker has a couple parrots that get nervous at night (she called it night fright) so she leaves a small light on and it curbed the crazy behavior. For treats try Puffs! They’re a baby treat but our rats and birds go crazy for them. You’re doing amazing Suzy! You’re a great parrot mom to this crazy little lady.
She is lovely! I feed my 2 parrots Harrison's Bird Food that I get from The Birdsafe Store online. They have a variety of high quality foods. Harrison's was recommended by my avian vet. They get seed, millet, monkey biscuits and almonds as treats.
An almond divides into 8 pieces for treating pistachios will do the same - clean up her diet! Chop in the am pellets can go at night pistachios only for trick training. She will eat when she is hungry but she's got you trained that if she says nope she gets her fav. Be consistent & clean up her spoiled behavior especially with diet & treats- this will help tremendously for training
I would cut the nut so she won’t take a long time to eat it. If you’re afraid she might bite, offer the piece of nut from an open palm. Have you tried fruit? My birds love apples, peaches, nectarines, pears, seedless grapes, papaya and mango. 2 of my Caiques go crazy over blueberries but the other 2 just throw them. I even have canaries that love fruit. All of my birds love chop. I do a mix of yellow lentils, quinoa, frozen peas, green beans, navy beans, garbanzo beans, sweet potato, bell peppers, cauliflower, broccoli, squash, kale, spinach. They also like chopped boiled eggs with chopped shell. The shell is great for calcium. I do give walnuts, pecans, pistachios, macadamias and pine nuts. I make birdie bread and add ground pellets to it. You can make the chop ahead of time and portion it in plastic bags and freeze it. You can also try putting a little cayenne pepper in it or organic dried red peppers. Converting to pellets can take a long time I think it’s a matter of patience and finding something that will have a higher value for the bird. If I could get the canaries to eat fruit and chop you can get your baby to eat a healthy diet. I know you’ll be successful. She’s a beautiful girl.❤️
Bless you! I played with a Hyacinth and Hahns Macaw today for the coast time at the bird store and rescue. I’m Perry melted by the Hyacinth but I’m probably going to get the hahns first. I look forward to filling your journey. Are you going to free fly her in the future? Check out the bird tricks RUclips channel cute examples.
Try fruit loops split into 5 pieces. My bird likes them a little stale lol. Irresistible and not too bad! Get the name brand ones they don’t have extra zink so your fella won’t get sick
QueAquatics no problem! The bird I own is a Quaker parrot. Just so you know the size relativity to the bird you may have. They are small bites I use them as a 3 second treat as to not distract or unmotivated them by snaking for too long and to be wanting another. Also has to do with keeping him out of “Quaker mode” something you might not get unless you have a quaker
I’m wondering if I should get I type of mini macaw but I have high school so I’m not sure. Would a mini macaw be ok if I have school? If not what parrot/bird would you recommend
That depends on your life style of you and your family. I know many people who go to work/school and come home and spend quality time with their birds.
Hi there, not sure if you check your older vid comments, but in case you do first I hope you and Sophie are doing well. This is the first video of yours I have seen. I was watching this with my 25 year old severe macaw on my shoulder that we have had since she was a baby. First I can tell that Sophie really likes you. I can see behaviors that she wants to be picked up. I believe that she is a bit cage bound, but that can be corrected. There is so much I could get into here but all birds will and do bite, but I would recommend you use your hands not your arm or shoulders. You want to be in control of the bird not vice versa. Be firm but never negative, only positive reinforcement. Best book I can recommend for bird training is Maddy Sue Athans "Guide to a Well Behaved Parrot". Severes can be one of the more challenging macaws to keep as they have big swings in temperament. My severe wanted nothing to do with me during her teenage years then she turned 20 and became daddy's bird again. So you just never give up with them patience and love win the day.
@@QueAquatics Trust will come in time, my macaw we got as baby but my others were rescues and that bond will take time. It took my wife 5 years to convince my grey that she is not a chew toy. :)
Your doing great, maybe cut the pistachios very slightly smaller so you both slowly get used to smaller treats. Check out Birdtricks videos for all sorts of training they are super helpful including diet and how to get your bird to eat healthier.
