As an ex-city dweller (including Paris and Brussels), now a "refugee" in the countryside, I now simply avoid all cities anywhere unless I really have to go. And now that we're free to do it (grown up children) my wife and I only travel off season, but still avoiding hot touristic spots at all cost.
Thank you for highlighting this problem. As visitors and tourists we have a responsibility to consider the people who are trying to live their lives in these places. Yes, tourism brings benefits, but over tourism destroys all that and more!
Cruise ship tourists are obviously not counted, they count only those who stay overnight. Mykonos and Santorini are way more packed during the summer season due to cruise ship tourists and they are thinking of imposing limitations to improve the quality of the vacations of the normal tourists who leave a lot more money than just a fridge magnet and a sandwich.
I used to work on cruise ships in the early 2000, and I went to all of these cities except for Herkelon (spelt wrong ) and it was great. So few people, would hate to go now!…….🤗🇨🇦
In reality even before the current mass tourism “pandemic” I always avoided obvious tourist hot spots during the Summer months. The problem now seems to be that even many of what used to be lesser touristic cities are being infected
Haha...😅For most people and families only time can travel is SUMMER! Few exception groups of people can avoid the Peak period. The special arrangement then. 😆
I like to travel off the beaten trail...but have enjoyed and do enjoy seeing some major tourist sites but never during high season and no extra $$_ to visit
Many great cities as the ones on your list are overcrowded during the peak season. It's not so easy to find a destination not overcrowded during the summer time.
I vistited the Anne Frank House in January 2008 and there was a line that meant a 45-minute wait to enter. So I'm convinced the only time there wasn't a line for the Anne Frank House during opening hours was when COVID-19 restrictions were in place.
I have dogs, so not traveling this summer. I’d like a vacation/scenic getaway where I could enjoy them and the destination in one place for a while. Forgo the “sites”.
I understand the burden it puts on the local residents but at the same time, it's also allowed for local businesses to grow and thrive. It's definitely a conundrum but how would the locals feel if it suddenly dried up? You can't blame the tourists when there are so many ads and commercials promoting and encouraging people to travel. The underlying problem is not the tourists but the mismanagement of local governments who don't put a cap on short-term rentals and foreign real estate investments. The money isn't staying in the local economy.
Reykjavik ? LOL. Seriously ? This video is comparing apples with pears. Amsterdam for example has a lot of tourists. I've haven't been in Dublin for a while, but im sure they have their share. But that's not even close to the amount of people flooding into cities like Florence & Venice or some Greek islands. So saying that Tallin & Reykjavik have mass tourism problems feels a bit far fetched.
I think the ratio of people to tourist was mention. I thought it was a very well done (as always) video. It’s a depressing topic so I can’t imagine it was easy to do! Kudos to Hal.
@@kerrym5424 The ratio is the whole point i'm objecting to. In for example Venice it's almost a million tourists a day on 50.00 inhabitants . If a thousand people visit Reykjavik it may feel bit more crowded because it's rather a small city. In Amsterdam it's a few hundred drunken a-holes making a lot of trouble is a menace, but most tourist are welcomed . I'm not saying over tourism isn't a problem. The problems differ and are rather complex .Not just 'too many people come to one place '.
There's no German city on this list. If you are into classical music, especially German classical music, the German cities of Leipzig, Hamburg, and Berlin all have excellent performance venues and "orchestras of cultural significance" as their music union Unisono calls them. The German government helps support 129 such orchestras.
I’m sure Germany wants to keep the small tourist crowds. They already having problems w permanent foreigners, wink. I’ve travelled through Germany, gorgeous clean country, underrated tourist destination
What you're implying isn't true. Overcrowded doesn't mean worth visiting. Tourists are lazy. That's the reason. There are many many wonderful places to visit that aren't overcrowded.
@@CaptCanuck4444I agree. For example, this past May I went to visit Granada, Spain. And it’s not super easy to get there, since you need to take a plane to Malaga and then a bus to Granada. Most tourist won’t do that, because like you said, they are lazy. Granada is beautiful! And not so crowded like Barcelona or Real Madrid.
I think that’s a good idea I will get that sorted actually but It depends on the area of Spain because you have regular nationalities hitting let’s say the southern Spain region
Dubrovnik you are a bit exaggerating, because it is not so bad as you describe it. Nowadays the city council only allows 2 cruisers per day, and mostly they are gone by 17h. There can be crowds, especially on rainy days where the beach people come to town, but this is far from being the chaos you are describing. Have you ever been to Dubrovnik? I doubt it.
So you are telling your 161 thousand subscribers and anyone else who watches your videos to visit less frequented cities so they too can become overcrowded!!
I think she is referring to people who can’t afford it (let alone a bath as an exaggeration.) I’m a retired older white female. With the cost of travel dramatically rising, I’d probably would fit into this category.
Gross exaggeration!!!!! None of these places are that bad.... And, if you don' like people, all you have to do is stay home and do your travelling online!!!!!!!!

How do you feel about mass migration?
Nr 1 should be Santorini... Ibeen the very first week when the Island opened and it was so packed ...just like Venice
You can add Capri and Barcelona to this list!
Yes
10. Tallin
9. Dublin
8. Amsterdam
7. Heraklion, Greece
6. Florence
5. Reykjavik, Iceland
4. Rhodes, Greece
3. Bruges, Belgium
2. Venice
1. Dubrovnik, Croatia
just come back from Santorini Greece. It was so packed from 10am to sunset time by cruise ship tourists, but Santorini is not listed.
Cruise ship tourists are obviously not counted, they count only those who stay overnight. Travel in winter- dress accordingly perfect peace.
Nice video
Thanks for sharing this information ❤
Cruise ships do pay a per person fee. But usually gobbled by port authority, and big government.
Nice video! I support you! Love your hat.
Barcelona, Balearen, Istanbul....
Was in Ireland this past April, thinking oh it’s shoulder season, will be quiet …BUT NO ..ALAS ! was still overcrowded
Did you go during Easter?
The whole of Ireland overcrowded! 😂 Certain popular tourists attractions, maybe. But the country still has a spacious charm.
Informative video for traveling
It’s unfortunate that there are so many fantastic destinations in South America like Buenos Aires most people don’t know about…
Good one Hal, great to see your face, the face behind the voice.

I was born in 1950 there were 2.5 billion people on the planet. I am now 74. There are 8 billion people on the planet.
Too many!
I went to Venice a week ago. Busy but not overcrowded. No queues for the basilca etc and no problems getting a table at a cafe or restaurant.
How can Rome not be in the list?? I went off season and could barely walk in the historic center
Awesome 👍
Awesome 😎
Yes. I get it. I visited Hannoi ones and it was very over whelmingly full of people. Thank goodness i live in Australia.

I feel like even shoulder season is overcrowded in any tourist location these days

Very strange not to see Barcelona, Palma de Mallorca, Prague and Krakow on the list.
Why are Barcelona and Palma de Mallorca not on the list ?

Summer travel means TERTIARY cities, towns and villages… way off the beaten path!! 🌎🌍🌏
May is a horrible time in Florence. School children are on vacation, badly behaved and everywhere.

Going Florence late September 😂
Bruges was brilliant in November
Yes I think it’s a great time for bruges
Still very warm but atleast better than June July August
good
I just went to Amsterdam and Brugge and it was really enjoyable, have to disagree about these 2 ...

Avoid Europe at all. It is not what it used to be.
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
true....
Can you suggest other destinations apart Europe please

You do realise that there is a reason “over crowded” cities are over crowded and “under crowded” cities are under crowded … don’t you ?

I wonder, has anyone thoight to do a demographic on the tourists? What is the breakdown of who is coming from where?
Great question, especially with respect to Spain. What percentage of tourists come from other European nations?
