Mac mini 2014 SATA SSD Installation

  • The 2014 Mac mini is a great little machine, but easily sunk by the clunky old hard disk drive that shipped in the majority of configurations. This 1.4 GHz model was horrendously slow, but adding a simple SATA SSD turns it into an entirely new machine, a machine that is still very much usable for the majority of basic tasks today.
I'd like to say a massive thank you to Jamie for donating this SSD to the channel for this project 😀

Always great to see a new IMNC video! Thanks for the post Tom. It is worth noting that the 2014 Mac mini can use NVMe SSDs with an inexpensive adapter using the Apple blade drive bus. It makes the SSD upgrade much easier, and you do not need to remove anything besides the bottom cover. You can then reuse the factory hard drive for extra storage. The performance is only slightly better than SATA III due to the Apple blade SSD bus, but it just makes the upgrade much simpler. Also, be sure that the firmware is from macOS High Sierra 10.13.6 or newer before installing the NVMe SSD. @ItsMyNaturalColor

I could have done with this video a few weeks back, as I did something similar recently.
I bought a 2.8GHz, 8GB, 1TB 2014 Mac Mini to use as a basic home server and the stock HDD was very slow with read and write around only 30MB/s. I was amazed at how slow the whole system was. I had a 1TB NVME drive and m.2 adaptor lying around (previously fitted to my old MacBook Pro) and I bought a 4TB HDD. I fitted these as a Fusion Drive and it transformed the performance of the system.
The 4TB HDD was 15mm thick, so I needed to use a 2012 hard drive bracket to get it to fit in the 2014 model and I had to buy the ribbon cable to attached the m.2 to the PCIE socket. Setting up the fusion drive with Big Sur was very easy too. It all works great.

Using an entire Mac mini for digital signage seems reasonable to me, based on the number of digital signs I’ve seen just sitting on the Windows desktop, or displaying bluescreens of varying severity.

I managed to pick up a 2010 Mac Mini off eBay for about £100 in /mint/ condition bar a tiny little nick on the top. I upgraded it to 8GB RAM, popped in a 240GB SSD, and upgraded it to Mojave using the Mojave patcher. Whilst it's faster on HS (the official maximum), it runs Mojave excellently. Also got Windows 7 on it for ripping DVDs and games. I love it!

I used to run a 2012 Mini which was maxed out on ram for my VM's and it was ok for testing but it did get hot. I think Tom would need to use separate machines as he'd need to send the display output to 8 different screens? Not sure if you could get 8 VM's to output video to 8 separate screens without lots of work. You'd need some way to connect into the VM's so that you could display the output at the desired location. 8 VM's running on one mini would be unworkable. Raspberry pi's running a suitable digital signage app or even just using LibreOffice Impress might do the job. It'd probably be able to run the keynote slideshow without any trouble! . Raspberry Pi's are way cheaper than macs and have free software . You could probably get all 8 pi's for less than the cost of a machine to host your vm's. You'd be able to get nice screens and VESA mounts for each system and all the memory cards and cables for next to nothing (compared to Apple).just chipping in with a sugestion. Edit: Raspberry Pi 4 has 2 HDMI outputs so you could use 4 pi's to drive 8 screens (2 screens per pi with the displays mirrored so that each pair of screens shows the same output). The 4 pi's would cost less than 8 and would be less work to update and manage. Maybe a splitter could be connected to the output of one system which could send the video output over HDMI cable from one system (pi or mac) to however many screens the splitter supported. Might be a cheaper option and more future-proof than x number of discrete computers be they mac or Raspberry pi?

@@NMY556L As far as I know the mini doing digital signage only sends an output to one device - an HDMI splitter. It's just one image sent to all the displays.

@@jamiechampion299 one output being sent to multiple displays might be of some use to Tom but he might want to tweak what's displayed on individual screens? The splitter idea might not be all that good of an idea then
