    1. These coins were NEVER called "threps". Sometimes "Thrupp'nce" (letter u to rhyme with either book or cup). Some people said "Threp'nce". We never sounded the e in pence. Also known as a thruppenny bit.
    2. Before decimalisation in 1971, the letter p was NEVER used to denote a penny or pence. A penny was 1d, tuppence was 2d thruppence was 3d and so on. The d stood for a denarius (denarii, the name of the Roman coin worth 1/240 of a pound.
    3. Only "new" decimal pence are abbreviated with p. They are also called "1p", "2p" etc.
    Please try to get this right.
