  • I apologize for the home movie, guys. But this means a lot to me.
My parents moved out of New York City in 2007, and it's very rare that they come down from upstate to visit me especially since my father has a hard time walking. We saw the tree in Rockefeller Center, but before going there my father has always wanted to take me to the spot where my grandfather worked back in the 1950s-1970s. A restaurant called The Red Devil that is no longer there. It's a very different area now, but walking through it I felt a good feeling. Like my beloved Poppa was with me somehow.
My grandfather came to America in 1939 to work at the World's Fair in Queens, and after a short stint in an Internment Camp in Missoula Montana came back to Queens and waited tables at this restaurant (not to mention learning how to cook amazing food). Working there he provided for his family: my father and aunt, and by doing so made it possible for me to come into existence.
This video is purely an indulgence and it's not monetized. But if you will allow me a moment of sentimentality, I wanted to share this candid moment with you all, if anything for posterity's sake.
    Thank you.

Thank you so much for this wonderful little vignette. You are so fortunate to have a rich family and community history. My knowledge of my family doesn't go past my mom.

No need to apologize, history of our families is history of our country. See if your father has any pictures of the place, it may help to visualize it better for you and us. You can scan them in and do an update. Thanks for sharing.

It is always nice to record family history. My parents grew up in New York and New Jersey but moved to California in the 50s when I was born but they always told me of their stories while growing up back east.

No need to apologize. Family moments caught on video resonate with many of us. Especially when they are candid, honest, unprepared, unrehearsed, spur of the moment and with a personal history behind them. Looking forward to more of these narrative/anthropologically cultural videos. Thank you for sharing!

I have been listening to a lot of old Radio Theater lately and falling in love with the American Culture of the 1940s. Having been raised by my parents who were greatly influenced by my grandparents' "Old American" values and heritage this video meant a lot to me; to see someone taking time to record a piece of their own history and bloodline - to remember where they came from, and not forget that were we are now is due to the humility, hard work, and love of those who came before us.. We must never forget... Thanks for posting this Steve!
Forgive the out of place question Steve, but
what camera and lens were you using for this shot?
    Thank you!

Sorry it took me 8 years to answer, but I believe I was using my Canon 16-35mm f/2.8 L on my 5D mk II.

Yesterday, my father handed me two old cameras since I'm more and more interested in them. One was made in the German Democratic Republic and one in West Germany. It's also family heritage since my grandfather fled from East to West Germany back then. :)

Saluté paisan. Our ancestors, Italians, built that city. A beautiful and noble heritage was once ours. Alas, it is a source of tremendous grief to me to have witnessed its collapse to distant memory in the span of one generation. Even in the old country, Italian identity has been displaced in the minds of a once noble race with an Americanist heterogenous indifference. The lure of diversity is a facade. In reality, it is an elaborate trap designed to surreptitiously eradicate all differences between ethnicities. To "celebrate" diversity is to embrace enslavement; for diversity is the primary psychological and cultural mechanism whereby the world powers have been able to subdue entire continents. In the West, ethnicities have been decimated; and in their ashes has been erected the illusion of differences known as "target markets". In the minds of our captors, the former are impossible to control; whereas the latter are formed and shaped at will.

@@DiCasaFilm haha! I quit. They locked me up for moving that stuff back when it was illegal.
Btw, on the "Three Point Lighting" tutorial, you replied to my comment, directing me to watch the "DSLR Basic Settings" training; and asking me to keep you posted on my amateur photography career. I have my first headshot shoot tomorrow. 20 headshots! Wish me luck.
I bought a green screen, and two lights, and a tripod.
However, please don't scold me, but I have to admit I'm just going to use my iPhone 12 Pro default camera app, and shoot in "ProRaw".
In my research, it seems the viewport display in that app gives you a precise representation of what the photo will look like.
Also, although I know real pros don't consider iPhone camera app's "exposure" slider to be "real" exposure; but, again, in my research, it seems the iPhone 12 Pro has a great reputation for setting shutter, aperture, and light sensitivity on the fly; so I'm going to give it a shot.
I know it's heresy to a pro to hear that, but I'm a naive techie who actually believes that shutter, aperture, and ISO can be set just as well by an algo as it can by a human. Banish the thought, I know; but these machines are taking over. It won't be much longer now before we're dodging agents like Neo.
I learned a lot from you, though; I mean that; and I will for sure rely heavily upon your training in the (likely) event that the tech lets me down. Your training is my backup plan when Apple poops on me! 💩
      Ciao fra!

@@JamesJosephFinn if that’s true about getting locked up, I’m sorry to hear. That sucks.
No worries man, I do not have that mentality about phone photography. Obviously the phone has some great pros and considerable cons, but I’d say it’s more about the fact that you’ve got yourself a gig and a client. Congrats and good luck!
It’s really cool to hear that my tutorials have been helpful. Have fun on the shoot and good luck with the photo editing as well!

@@DiCasaFilm Yes indeed. True story. And it did suck. It was that experience which led me to realize that this prison we call "freedom" has a lot in common with where they put me. More than you know. Lots of guys who did time feel the same way. It is an eye opening experience to say the least.
Thank you again for your training; because now I know exactly what to look for in the finished product to judge whether it's up to par. I watched each video twice. They have equipped me with the knowledge of proper lighting and proper exposure so I can walk into this shoot with confidence and control.
      Peace bro and Godspeed.
