    I agree. A C63 with 2000 on the clock ..... I can comfortably presume maybe 40% of its demonstrator life has been spent below redline. My first inspection point would be the inner rear guards to see how much rubber can be retrieved, and the colour of the oil.
    As for buying generally, there are a few simple rules;
    - Never decide on the spot.
    - Buy with your head, not your heart.
    - You have the cash, so you have the upper hand.
    - The car you're looking at is not the only car for sale. Be prepared to walk away.

      Will have been a 2000k thrash fest, I worked for a Bentley dealer when I was a young kid, demo cars were there to drive like you stole it, smoking tyres, hand brake turns, 100 mph plus stops to see if brakes are as good as they say, followed by boot to floor acceleration back to 100 +. Oh yeah, anyway that was a few years back an with trackers an the like you'd be sacked. I'd still be buying any sports car or motorcycle new because even the first owner will drive/ride like they stole it from my experience.

Georgie rang me and I gave them all the details. Make, model,colour, extras. They rang back with a price. Two emails and I picked up the car two weeks later. Easiest money I've ever made/saved. All your research and decision making should be done before you attend the show room. You decide what it’s worth to you. You ask a simple question “I wish to pay x price for this car. Is your answer yes or no? You have ten minutes to decide.” You need to make it clear you are not negotiating. You are making an enquiry. With a car this expensive you as the purchaser has all the power. So totally agree with John.

They will move cars to park you in, preventing your rapid exit, in order to delay you as long as possible, while they "work" on you. Park on a side street somewhere. They only get to see your car (if you're trading it in) if and when you decide to make a deal.

    Actually in Germany Mercedes sells cars to every employees at fantastic discounts so they can resell the cars to people who can't pay full price for a Mercedes. It's a great way to discount cars without officially discounting cars and angering people who paid full price. Mercedes makes a huge markup on each car so they don't lose money and their employees get a bonus.
    I wouldn't doubt that the dealer ran a few miles on the car so he could sell it as used... better to sell it cheaper than have it lay around and they don't have to reduce the price of a 'new' car.

    You can say the same for any car purchase at any dealer irrespective of brand. Simply put, the way to deal with it is to have a strategy in place, and stick to it. Budget equals spending limit, Ask the salesman what the lowest price he's willing to accept.If he won't take your offer within reason, walk. Lowest price wins. No- don't let them name the lowest price they will take- this is called "anchoring"- the negotiation then aims at getting as close as possible to that price. He will say a price at which he is making a healthy profit, not a price he will take if pushed. Best strategy is to look at the car and say "$168K !!!, you must be mad- it's a used car! It's probably been thrashed, and God knows who has sat in it. I"ll give you $135K tops" (knock at least 25% off the new price, because once you buy it, it will depreciate by at least that much.) He will say- no way, we will go broke, my kids will starve and the sun will go black at that price. Your reply? - "Here is my number, call me if you change your mind and want to talk a sensible deal. Meanwhile, I'll keep looking. Bye." Then you will find out his lowest price. If someone else buys it- there's plenty more fish in the sea. If you REALLY REALLY REALLY want the car, you are REALLY REALLY REALLY going to get screwed over. That's just the way it is. Remember, you have bought - how many cars? - 10? They sold that many last week. They know how to push your buttons- it's their job.

Your video made me recall my previous dealings with car salesmen though and I could not help but cringe at the memory. I even felt guilty for drinking their tea because I walked away in the end. Next time I'm visiting a car salesmanwoman or someone like that, I'm absolutely re-watching this though. You will be my strength, John.

    I've pretty much decided on the make/model of my next car. So I should do due diligence on the competitors. Now that's an experience! I now see evidence of why brokers exist. Some decided on complete indifference, some sneered in contempt of having to put the hat on..and go outside. Most had about half the knowledge of their product, that I do.
    But one "gets" it.
    No pressure, pleasant ,knowledgeable conversation (I even learnt something!). A repeatable exercise, as I went to some other dealers of the same brand.
    So the car I selected?

      John did a great video about splitting the transaction into 3 parts - trade in (if applicable), again if applicable finance and the actual cost of the vehicle. Stealerships often dupe their customers into believing they have given a good deal with a low trade in against their new car. The dealer often makes either commission or a percentage off the finance. Splitting up the transaction and coming ready prepared for buying makes it easier for you to get a better deal.

    Hi John, as someone who works in the automotive sales industry I often see people who take advice like yours and become so defensive and so horrified that they never actually end up satisfied with a deal if they even end up purchasing the car they want! Alternatively customers come in with a “know it all” attitude and regularly walk away from our very best price, because they simply believe that the profit margins in our cars are far greater than they are, it’s upsetting that the old days have shaped the perception of our industry and regardless of how genuine and fair I try to be with some of the “informed” shoppers that I might find here they refuse to listen to reason and continue to assume that I can sell an already discounted vehicle for a further 15% off unfortunately it’s not viable. I come to work to sell cars, and the easiest way to sell a car is with a fair and reasonable deal.

Yeah, OK, so it was only a shit box second hand $19000 duel fuel Falcon back then, but still, "...We normally drop $1000 off for people, but for you we have dropped $2000 off the price", my reply "You have only gone half way mate". I was in a mood that day, and had time to play the game, saved myself $4000....Eventually. They just had their profit margin reduced is all, they would have still made money on it anyway, the only consolation I had was, I saved myself $4000 at the end of the day...Yesssss. Actually, I only got rid of that vehicle a year ago.

    watched many of your vids always a good laugh.im currently trying to buy a used Audi A5 here in the UK. ive tried essentially the same tips you've given here, which ive found to work mostly in the past, but now im finding dealers just not biting. recently offered £15000 on an Audi A5 Black Ed with 45k on it 2015, that was up for £16000, dealer whined about the fact they'd already reduced it blah blah. then when I wouldn't budge on my offer started asking me why I was looking at cars priced at £16k if I only had £15k. he was getting quite rude and pissed me right off. so left them to it.im also finding the previous "cash is king" no longer seems to work. dealers seem completely disinterested at the prospect of a pile of cash, and would far rather sell the car on finance.I put the blame for this change and the lack of decent un-thrashed or un-crashed cars squarely at the doorstep of PCP. I don't know if you have this in Aus yet but it has screwed the used market in the UK. I keep finding used and abused cars, as the owners know they are only going to have it for 3 years and then it will be someone else's problem.

    Is there any strategy to not get ripped off on a car that is known to have a waiting list. At the moment in Shitsvile my understanding is that the Suzuki Jimny has a waiting list of so many months that the contract goes stale and has to be resigned. I can’t think of a harder situation to negotiate from. In my limited toolbox to negotiate all I can think of is to wait a year presumably to be out of the waiting list scenario. John, great stuff, cheers. Question: in the Motorhome market I’ve seen stories where dealers didn’t actually own the management/demonstrator/hire vehicle, it was on a lease that the dealer promised to pay off with the customers’s money - before then going bust. So the customer has no cash or vehicle. Obviously we could insist on having the lease cleared first by the dealer with their own cash, but do you have any other thoughts or tips ?

      That's kinda what Toyota does in NZ. The dealer is the demonstration agency, the new car is ordered direct from Toyota NZ at a fixed price. Where they try and gut you is on the trade-in. So if you are a cash buyer the process is much less stressful. As an example the Camry dropped 10000NZD from RRP to TDP (Toyota Driveaway Price).

  • @spazzman90
    @spazzman90 5 лет назад

    Been saying this for years. Although, the first step should have been mentioned more. I'm talking about research. I read about other deals folks are getting put together. This is important, because you tend to find out about factory deals that can be worth many thousands off but just haven't made it to your dealer, until you bring it up. So yeah, do some research, make your offer and walk. Some times they don't call back, more often they don't let you leave the lot. And like John said again briefly. STICK TO YOUR NUMBER!
