'Tar Barrel in Dale' lyrics:
Tar barrel in dale
Fire in snow
Toast the New Year
Bid farewell to the old
The old year out
The New Year in
Please wont you let
The lucky bird in
With bottle in hand
And a piece of black coal
A stranger's a friend
When first-footing you go
Tar barrel in dale
Fire in snow
Toast the New Year
Bid farewell to the old
At midnight's approach
The band you can hear
The fiery procession
Of guisers draws near
With friends and good company
With voices so clear
Singing in harmony
Bringing in the New Year
Tar barrel in dale
Fire in snow
Toast the New Year
Bid farewell to the old
Off the heads of the guisers
The blazing barrels are hurled
On to the bonfire
Smoke, sparks and flames swell
And its cheers and rejoicing
The rites of Old Father Time
We'll link arms together
Sing Aulde Lang Syne
Tar barrel in dale
Fire in snow
Toast the New Year
Bid farewell to the old
Throughout the year
When we sing this song
Old friends and new friends
Sing along
May good fortune be with you
From all sorrows refrain
Till that happy time
When we all meet again
Tar barrel in dale
Fire in snow
Toast the New Year
Bid farewell to the old
HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL

I love the Unthank's music I thank my daughter for pointing me to this.
Saw the sisters on tv last night. I can't believe that I had never heard of them. They sing so well.....and what harmonies. Absolutely brilliant !
remember hearing this live on the show. had tears in my eyes. kind of awkward. I was at work at the time.
Simply beautiful, like the area in which the song is set and where I am fortunate to live..
This kind of music in one form or another has been sung in England for probably thousands of years, kind of haunting when you think of the history.
My heart swells in my chest when I hear these harmonies! Sob sob...
If ever we needed to bid farewell to a year......
Real slow-burner this one, like many I got hooked from hearing it on Radcliffe and Maconie show on December 22nd, driving back from Teesside. Incredible harmonies
so wonderful to hear this,..... a feeling of belonging , back in the nostalgic memories of winters past in my childhood....
I was looking for scenes from the Maxwell Anderson play WINTERSET, and instead I found Rachel Unthank and The Winterset. Never heard of them before, but after listening to just a couple of songs, I'm hooked. It's beautiful music! Lovely harmony. Talented ladies, particularly when they sing a cappella. Best wishes from New Jersey, U.S.A.
Snow still covering a few stones from our Christmas Day flakes falling like Angels from heaven...yet stars shinning brightly through the winter clouds...memories live, souls remain connected for love is eternal. Blessed and warmest wishes for our brand New Year 2011. The circle will forever remain unbroken. You all live in my heart! Many candles glowing tonight to warm us from heavens gate to the faraway shores and tallest Holy mountains...of somewhere in time. Our hearts remember! Nightingale
Fantastic song - lovely sound
This music was made in heaven. What harmonies! Never heard anything like it. Also well done to whoever put the slideshow together. Fabulous photos
Heartfelt song and in a beautiful place the Dale's my favourite 😊
I love it. Also heard it on Rad & Mac R2 show. With all this snow, this song warms the cockles of my heart. If it's not too late, Happy New Year to everyone.
Evocative beautiful heartfelt........ a perfect seasonal song....... it makes me cry.
Brilliant! I only saw the Unthanks for the first time ever on LWJH last night. I can only compare them to Lindisfarne and some of Jethro Tull. Thanks for the posting. The photos are excellent too and nicely convey the sense of the song.
haunting and beautiful, ... echoes of Laurie Anderson's "o superman"
wooooooooooooooow this is .... i cant stop cryin ...
Most unusual ... I love it. Splendid harmony. Greetings to one and all from Big Hugh of Mundlimup in wonderful Western Australia.

@maddalicex sat listening to this over the new year and can't find the words to explain how it makes me feel, powerful song!
Great song, Thanks for posting, Have a happy new year.
I find Becky Unthank's voice wonderful and rich. Not that I dislike Rachel's. But together like this they sound fantastic!
Unspeakably beautiful ...
@MrSupermonkeynova Not on an album, has just been released on itunes as part of a package that includes 'Lucky Gilchrist'.
And now of course on the Archive Treasures 2005-2015 CD; just in case anybody should happen along who still isn't aware of it. 😎😎😎
Love..
This is so cool, thanks!
It's not on Cruel Sister but they have been performing it live recently.
Written by Rachel and Becky's dad.
Now this is more like it. Get rid of all that backing and we can hear what you really sound like. Beautifully recorded.
I see that the one critical comment was deleted -wanted to check the correct title
beautiful :)
Where are the pictures from?
my choir fancy a go at this.. is there a score anywhere?
dan maitland I'll see if I can send you the dots. A little choir of mine sang it at a wassailing a while ago. Our tenor was from the North East so sounded authentic.
@gatheringsamphire Yes - you are the only one.
@gatheringsamphire Oh well.
Their father wrote this song.
