  • Nothing worse than finding a tick on your body. When you're a tortoise and you spend your life lying on the ground and moving through the brush it's natural to find many of them constantly on your neck and leg area. The radiated, aldabra and Galapagos torts in my front yard seem to be especially infested. Time to do something about it and treat them to a spa day! I rescued a dog with white fur, but her skin was completely black. On closer inspection, iut turns out that she was literally covered from head to toe in ticks. They were inside her ears, on her eyelashes and lips, between her toes, EVERYWHERE. There was not a single area that wasn't affected. After 3 rounds of flea shampoo, and almost 4 hours of picking them off one at a time, I finally got her clean. She has pink skin now. She gained almost 2 pounds over the next year and a half, which was desperately needed.

That is so sad because dogs can get Lyme as well as people if you have it in your area. It is unbelievable the things that ticks can transmit. I went to the CDC once to look up each tick born illnesses and what it does. Very Horrific 😯

Kenan, hopefully you are using a reptile formulated permethrin as permethrin are toxic to reptiles and have actually historically been used to exterminate reptiles. I would also recommend applying at the front via a cotton swab and not spray and in the video you can see that Timmy rub his face after the spray to history RHS. I would also wash it off after it has had time to soak into the mites. I would speak to your vet again. Please be careful

"Diatoms are algae that live in houses made of glass.
They are the only organism on the planet with cell walls composed of transparent, opaline silica."
I am about to wind up the summer semester of teaching Marine Biology , so this is on my mind. Diatoms are one group of the photosynthesizing, single celled organisms in both fresh and salt water. In the ocean , Diatoms and other phytoplankton, produce over half of all the oxygen we breathe on planet Earth !
AND ... their left-over shells are great for persuading ticks 🪳to leave tortoises 🐢.....and snails 🐌 to leave the plants 🪴!

I have wealth of info to share and sometimes go into a bit of detail, hoping it helps someone. Time, experience and learning from mistakes gives a person a vault of information. I worry people think I'm strange when I don't keep it to a couple lines.
You just gave me a lot of info I had been wondering about.
So, is it safe for the underbelly of snakes. I have garter snakes in my yard. I have created "hides" for them with the hopes that between them and the birds, they can control the insects. I don't like to uses poison. I have dogs and a Perigrine Falcon that has been coming to my backyard for close to 4 years.

@sallyrutledge8238 same to you. I didn't know that about diatomaceous earth and diatoms. I shared it with my mom. We both are avid gardeners and oddly have scientists in the family who also pursue entomology as a hobby, but this was new and welcoming info. We understood the basics of what it did but not the real what it was and how it did it. Good to know
Mom moved to the desert, but we are planning to move to new territory. I want land for my dogs and to have peace and quiet. Land here is astronomical in price. Our new state is going to be humid, buggy, and full of mosquitoes and ticks.
Long ago (in the 70s/early 80s), my grandmother taught me her way of gardening and life skills. I would go stay with her on her farm for a couple of weeks each summer. Because she lived through the depression, she taught me to can, to grow food, how to fertilize it without buying commercial fertilizer (compost), to recycle, and/ or reuse. Later, she developed cancer, and they said it was from pesticide or herbicide exposure. She didn't use those because she was a tight wad. She made sprays from hot pepper seeds in water, blended it up, and added some dish soap and spray. Plant marigolds. Ect. 🦗🪲 She made compost tea to fertilize or use fish. She trickle watered and layered cardboard and straw on the ground in the veggies to hold moisture.
But crop dusters flew over her house. If they were as bad then as they are now, I can bet that was what cause the cancer.
Because of that, it altered the our lives. My brother became a molecular chemist with the focus on cancer research. I have never used chemicals.
But.....a person also needs to think, a tick and mosquito can carry pretty bad illnesses. Can you keep them at bay without chemicals? Which is the lesser evil?

Not chalk at all. Sort of the opposite. Diatoms are micro shells so the dust is super sharp and cuts the pests open so they "bleed"/dry out and die..
It CAN be irritating and eventually harmful for humans to breathe. Similar to asbestos.

DE powder is awesome. You can use it in your home to get rid of fleas and ants as well. It basically scratches the exoskeleton of the pest and causes them to dehydrate to death. (from what i recall) the only downside is that you'll be vacuuming it up for years to come, but you'll not have to worry about fleas for quite some time. Treated my house with it about 6 yrs ago and haven't seen a flea since. Along side the frontline on my cats and the problem was gone in a few weeks. well worth it.
Edit: Happy birthday! :D Hope you had an amazing one with your family!

*KampKenan* I have a theory ✋ why some species have much more, more, less, lesser or no ticks/ecto-parasites than others: you wanna know? 💭 🤔 It's 3 things actually ticks are attracted to "Sweat" and pheromones secreted from your sweat glands. They are also attracted and will eat dead or dry flakey skin particles
I learn all this from all 4 of these professionals and close friends(my Medicial Doctor, my former environmental Earth science/biology teacher, my professor at UWf in Pensacola Florida and my dermatologist here in Dallas Texas)
The derma-Earth product does work no doubt cause I used it for bedbugs(who are relatives to these Ticks,Mites,Scorpions, Water Bugs and spiders) this works on all these arachnids.. but be warned,if you get heavy rain it will either/and/or wash away the products from the ground or clump it up and move it away from the ground even though it's very light.
So I am glad you decided to do this on a Tuesday morning/afternoon(and surprisingly you uploaded this on a Sunday morning lol 😂)
Quick suggestion too: buy you some natural animals bee's wax for the turtles. Why you ask? It's time we wax the turtles down, get Leo,Sophia,Mrs Kate/Mark and Thom involved haha it would a great time for you guys to bond with the turtles great and small..
As I stated before and you can do this with Queen large as well(just be more alert with her since she is a Common snapping turtle) "Grooming is the highest form of affection you can give any animal in the animal kingdom.." sometimes they will pair or PeerBond with their Keepers growing ever so affectionate with that individual or multiple individuals..

Mike is so funny, the two of you guys have great working chemistry together. I wonder if encouraging more possums around would be worth the risk of them eating other things for the ticks they supposedly eat. I'm spoiled, we don't get many ticks in my area except in the deeper brush and woodsy places, not often in yards, so my little dog is safe. I keep an eye out but she's pretty free of such things.

Does the diatomaceous earth doesn't hurt snakes underbelly? I have garter snakes in my yard. I never use poison because of my wild snakes, the birds....I have a Perigrine Falcon that comes every morning and I have my own German Shepherds who get to go out once Mr or Ms? Falcon is done with breakfast. If I use poison, I make everyone sick.
No ticks here, mosquitoes. ....millions. what do you use for mosquitoes? Just personal spray?

    • @jeb_vlogsmiller-zs8iz
      @jeb_vlogsmiller-zs8iz Год назад

      Mosquitoes 🦟 are easy problem...
But these things you see are females that attack us and animals(they need blood for the young) the males(unless they are hybrids...) Only go after flowers and fruits ..
Quick tips: remove standing water(cans that fill up etc)
Clean your bird and foundation baths at once once a week(dump all the water out and dry them too)
Don't wear fruity or sweet based performs or colognes during these time, just a warning cause mosquitoes 🦟 are very attracted to it..
My cousins and I did an experiment years ago(about 15 years ago) when I visited his mother's residence and it was hot summer morning to evening that day: no mosquitoes 🦟🦟🦟 in sight however...
I tested a theory by spraying some old spice, Axe body spray and JustForMen sprays outside on the front porch.. his mother thought I was crazy but she knew what was up after I showed her. .. after 5 minutes me,her and my cousins sat outside and could hear thousands of 🦟🦟🦟🦟🦟🦟🦟 mosquitoes buzzing and heading towards the house(we closed the doors, windows and airlocks Admittedly lol) 😈 we were Engolfed by millions of mosquitoes it's was like black cloud 😈.. so fair warning to the wise and experienced try not to wear certain colors and smells(they will find you and quick lol) 😈
The mosquitoes left after 30 minutes, after the previous 5 minutes of spraying the porch 😈

Kenan have you ever thought about spraying Beneficial Nematodes? Even if you only spray them on the bark areas and the immediate surroundings in each penned area, I think it would keep the tick population way down. I used to spray my yard every spring and I had zero fleas and ticks. I think, after a few years, you can start doing it once every 3 years or so, but you have to build them up in your soil first. Your other choice is to add chickens. I hear they help clean up the tick population pretty well - double-check me on that one.

Ever considered a medium sized aviary with tick eating birds? And once in a while release some tortoise in there to naturally get them picked off? Like a carwash but for tortoise :P

I a not opposed to "rescue" as a noun. I do not prefer "rescue" as a verb. It feels wrong. Adopted is much more accurate and less egoic. Most street animals have challenges of a physical nature and unconditional love always finds a way.
