Over the last few years! Blender Guru got very interested on Houdini. And that's just great. Imagine if one day he starts teaching houdini for free. Just like blender. I think he will make super cool tutorials, just like how he did to blender.
Blender: We improve our UI, remake the sculpt feature. And make a real time render engine Houdini: We improve literally everything Max: chamfer modifier? It is new guys?
3ds max has the better performance of all the DCCs and it's the king for Archviz, so there is no point in comparing it to Blender or Houdini because Houdini is mainly used for FX, Sims and Proceduralism ,most regular Artists don't use it only handful of Tech Artists & blender has the worse performance and many workflow issues...Autodesk just released indie version around the world 20$/ month, really great deal for Artists & Hobbyists :)

its all in your head, nothing is impossible, but I found it very easy to learn after learning blender. when your CG fundamentals and terms are clear then it will be easy to learn any software. If somebody tells you its difficult to learn then you not even try to learn you just afraid to even try. so I suggest you try first and do go with the peoples opinions try for yourself.
it sound very similar to a throw together band i saw in 2002 A.I. in santa monica, the leader was a kid from a rich family with a studio , real cool guy , ray Mazurek from the doors was there, everyone was wow your gonna blow up ,the kid was all about ,nah , not really interested.. they wrote ,bottoms up, soul rescue, there you go, and alien sex ... all really good! i have no idea how i got them . or if they are on the interweb ?
I dont think SideFX ever “intends” on taking a steaming shit on everyone else’s doorstep, thats just how good their team is. Amazing work as always guys!
This is fantastic ! I love new Houdini releases, I still have a ton to learn for 18.5, but all the new tools that's close to what I do for work is going to be a major benefit. Thanks to all who worked on this, love you all !
even as a none professional with little to no knowledge I understand that Houdini is shaping the future of film making and game design. although i will never be able to use this it is extremely exciting to imagine what workflows will be accessible in the future.
Depends on the use. Maya is good at some tasks and Houdini at others. I'm so very impressed by their realistic fabric movement, flames and explosions. Getting the way those things move right is difficult.
rigging and modeling I use blender, simplest unreal engine is for the environment, rendering and animations for my characters AND ist 100% free all the versions, cool for making games and vids and its even compatible with a none nvidia/AMD laptop yet it works fine i cant leave it especially when the 5th version is promising even better features, got to love the niagra
All the character stuff mekes me happy, maybe one day I won't have to get back to maya for character work :), all the retargeting and clip mixing stuff looks awesome!
Purely Personal Reaction: While not as excitement inducing as the versions that introduced stuff like Vellum, PDG and Solaris, these are all very useful improvements that will warrant upgrading. I can see many in the games industry (and others) wanting many of these features/improvements and eventually wondering how they used to survive without them.
The guitar player had as much fun playing, as I did watching this, and you did making these amazing VFX POSSIBLE! PROPS, SideFX on adding even more awesomeosity to Houdini!
One click explosions, Wow! Impressive sims, There was never a doubt anyway, after this there will never be. This is the best dynamics software on the planet. :)
Brilliant update as always!! Move everything to one context as much as you can...reduce jumping around contexts... everything at one place one glance to understand whats going on the network.
I really need to start saving up for houdini. Blender cant do simulations that well and I want to get into fluid and softbody sims more. This looks amazing!
You could use the Indie version... which is for rent scheme. Or alternatively try the Apprentice version for free, to see if it's for you. It's not an easy 1-to-1 conversion from Blender as the workflow is radically different. But there's a lot of really nice tutorials online if you look for them.
When Vellum was introduced, i've commented it looked great, but MD had a feature Vellum might never have: direct interaction with the cloth. Fast forward to today, SideFX slaps my face and delivers that feature. Madness. But i still prefer MD, my workflow has estalished, don't want to change. Then they introduce KineFX. Wow, that's what MD lacks of, it opens a lot of possibilities. "Maybe i should make everything relating to cloth in Houdini from now on, no need for another software". MADNESS. Still need to try it hand on though. But hugh respect for SideFX.
SideFX - the only big software company I know that keeps truly innovating every year, and continues to make their (already amazing) product better and better, instead of adding some gimmicky nonsense invented by the marketing department. You can rely on them to blow your mind with something amazing once per year.
Nod to all old MAX user's "instead of adding some gimmicky nonsense" what like waiting all year then only getting a "EGG SPLINE" = "I so please i Jump ship years ago from Autodesk"
Holy shit. Those fire and smoke sim updates alone are worth the update. Another impressive release guys.
