Love the way the main operator was mimicking Ernestine, one of Lilly Tomlin's characters on "Rowan and Martin's Laugh In", the iconic 70s show that launched the career of Goldie Hawn and others.
Origin story: the term “give me the 411” comes from these days. If you needed a phone number and didn’t have access to a phone book, you dialed 411 for “information” and they could give you the number. For an extra fee they would connect you.
Love this group! Midas Touch, Wet My Whistle, No Parking on the Dance Floor, Freak a Zoid and Don’t Rock the Boat are great jams! But this song was what hooked me into them! 🤩
Party line was shared phone lines to save money but u could be talking, then the lady down the street would pick up and ask if she could use the line, so then u would end your conversation.
I can't find that you've done Herbie Hancock's "Rockit." You SHOULD. Not only is it a fantastic song that you will absolutely love and get down with, but the video was one of the most innovative in the early days of MTV.
Music today can't EVEN hold a candle to the bangers from back in the day!! We danced ALOT back then...walk in the club dressed to the nines...walk out soak and wet...LOL!!
When I was growing up in the country we were on a party line which meant the phone bill was low but you shared the phone line with neighbors. You would pick up the phone and accidentally hear the conversation of the person next door. We only used the phone for important stuff never casual conversation.
Each home on the line had their own ring pattern for incoming calls; these were mainly out on rural farm lines by 1967 in Missouri, the year we shared a party line with three other homes.
@@1969madame Yes ! I love both actors. Ewan McGregor and Renee Zellweger did a parody movie called "Down With Love" that I thought was really funny. She plays a Doris Day type character complete with all the outrageous outfits. 🥰❤
Midnight Star is awesome. Such great memories. We had a partyline when I was growing up in MS. we had several neighbors that shared the line. Your phone would have a special ring when it was your number dialed, but that didn't stop people from picking up and listening in on your conversations lol
Hmm. We had a party line for a bit when I was growing up. I don't remember the special ring, but you're probably right that we had one, because otherwise neighbors would've been picking up each other's calls all the time, not knowing who it was for!
Yeah, a lot of the phone references in this 1985 song wouldn't be understandable to people today. By the time of this song, you could call people directly on your (landline) phone, but just a few decades earlier, you would have had to call an operator first and they would connect you with the line you wanted to reach. The images in this video of an operator manually connecting lines in a switchboard was a retro touch that was probably supposed to be humorous: 'Remember when operators used to do that?! That was so old school!," And by 1985, party lines mostly occurred in rural areas for some reason. I remember hearing rural relatives talking about trying to make a call to someone and they would hear other people's voices from the town already talking, so I think they had to wait until the other people finished to make their call. There may have been ways to have an operator connect you with multiple people in the same area code too for a deliberate party line, but I don't remember that.
"Party line" was a monthly billing plan that split costs between multiple households, but you shared time. It was kind of like having a sibling on the phone, if you picked up your handset and there's somebody talking - you apologize and hang backup. Or get their estimate of how long they will be, and then try again later. Most often occurred in rural locations where a phone was an expensive luxury.
Fantastic song and one our staple groups that we would have on our party mix tapes for our teenage dance parties. Operator and No Parking On the Dance Floor were always played.
We had a party line when I was young. We lived in the country and the other household on our line was our neighbor, my Aunt and Uncle. I was preteen and sometimes would spend a while on the phone, and definitely got into trouble for tying up the line when my Aunt wanted to make a call! Lol and sometimes you would sneak and listen to their conversations! Lol. Don't tell anyone though, ok? 😂
OMG! One of my favorite groups of the 80s. So many hits to choose from. Like Electricity, Freak-A-Zoid , Headlines, Don't Rock The Boat, and if you want to mellow down, check out Slow Jam.
this played at every party and event back in the 80's i would out at a restaurant and this was playing one of my favorite songs from midstar its party time with this one still play it now.
You need to check out their slow jam, um, "Slow Jam." 😅 Also, "Headlines," which is similar to "Operator"; "Snake in the Grass"; "Curious"; "Wet My Whistle"; and others. I had an unintentional party line, a cheap cordless phone that every other cordless phone in the neighborhood seemed to interfere with. 😅😂
I remember the party lines. You actually would call a number and there were different "rooms" you can connect to and talk to different people. It's like chat rooms but on the phone. "Freak-A-Zoid" is just a fun song too. It's the kind of song where you're not even trying to swag or be cool, just let your freak flag fly. 😎👍
Jay and Amber thank you for this i put this as a request also. You both make me laugh with your movements during the song your being yourselves which is how it should be. You are blessed.
OMG...its been years since ive heard this song....the 80's were so awesome...i truly miss those times and memories...such a great decade to have lived through...
The very first album I ever owned was a Midnight Star album. I was 10 years old and my uncle gave me the cassette tape. My favorite song by them was Freak-A-Zoid!!
Wowwww....😎 Haven't heard this since 4th grade ('84 or '85?) when my older brother brought the casette tape home and blasted it on our living room stereo.
A party line was where you could have 3 or 4 houses on the same line but the phone would have a different ring to let the people know who it was for . It cost more to have a private line which was just one person or house on it .
This one, "Freakazoid" and "Midas Touch" are my favorites from them. Glad you got to this one, this was a request from a long time ago, thanks for getting to it. Such a good jam. Song Suggestion: Five Star--If I Say Yes.
This is some deep, intergalactic funk, the type of tune for the poppers and streetdancers to get down to. I'm sure someone is going to suggest "Freak-a-zoid", but I would suggest "Night Rider" or "Midas Touch" from their 1986 album.

"Operator" was Midnight Star's only pop hit in 1984/85. So Rob you were right on the date. They had over a dozen R&B hits in the 80s. Their other bigger hits were "Freak A Zoid", "Wet My Whistle" and "Midas Touch",
Glad you covered this, it's an all-time great! Party lines allowed multiple people to share one line in a neighborhood. That's all i remember of them, but they were not efficient! Definitely have been some positive changes since then. The phone operator lady is homage to Lily Tomlin's "Ernestine", if you're into 70s comedy. There's a great bit where Lily and Cher have a conversation... Forget autotune, we need more vocoder! ❤ seriously, this song was so creative and awesome and the time and is just as energetic today! Plus, the phone booth is a TARDIS, hehe!
Love Midnight Star! Fun Fact: the operator that says “can you speak up a little louder cuz I can barely hear ya” was a real operator call. The group hooked up a mic to the phone and dialed “0”, so that was an actual conversation. The poor lady never got a royalty for being on the record. 😂
When I was growin up in the 60s my aunt had a party line. It was a phone line she shared with several of her neighbors. We used to get in trouble for picking up my aunt's receiver and listening to the neighbors' conversations instead of hanging up and waiting a while to see if the line was free. The party line phone service cost less than a regular private line, so that was the attraction if you were on a budget. BTW, I am loving the giant black phone receiver in this video; so comedic.
This was a Party Hit back in the Day!!! I am sure it is still making it's tour in the USA and Oversea for the Funky Dance Songs.... Great Selection... LOVE IT!!!
All the other comments talking about party lines where you can hear other people's conversation though is way back in the 40s and 50s for sure in the 50s. Back in the 70s there was a different type of party line it was a busy signal where a bunch of people would end up on if you called somebody and their phone was busy not everybody had call waiting back then and people, were able to talk to each other over the busy signal and over other people talking. People would exchange phone numbers and hook up or just make a friend to talk to you over the phone it was a lot of fun I was a young teenager at the time growing up in a suburb of Los Angeles County CA 😊😊
We had a party line in the dorms when I was in college-- several rooms were on the same line, so when you pick up the phone to make a call, there could be someone else already on the line, so you'd have to wait til they were done with their call before you could make yours. And anyone on your line could overhear your call (as you could overhear theirs.) It's wild to think that back then, there were several different rooms (or houses) on the same line, whereas nowadays, several people in the same house each have their own individual line!
My grandparents had a party line. It basically meant several houses shared a phone line, they didn't have their own private line. You'd pick up the phone to make a call and hear someone talking so you had to hang up and wait for them to finish before you could make your call. You could also, although it was a big no-no, eavesdrop on people's conversations! I think I got in trouble for that a few times! 😂
I thought she was talking about when you used to call in certain 1-900 numbers to talk to complete strangers in a conference call like atmosphere. You would pay per minute but get to have fun shooting the breeze with people you don't know. Kind of like social media over the phone! lol
Yes originally party lines were used in rural areas where several neighbors had the same line. It ringed a different tone for each person so they knew when it was for them. Also a lot of college dorms used them for years. Great tune!
Now you guys are ready for Midnight Star's "Curious". THAT was the smooth jam you'd play late at night and is still played at grown & sexy events to this day!
Amber - a party line was a shared landline phone line. When I was little, my Mammaw and her neighbors all shared one phone line. If you needed to make a call and picked up the phone, it was very possible to hear your neighbor's conversation if they were already on. And if you really needed to make a call, you'd have to ask them to please get OFF the phone, which they might or might not. When I was a little girl in the early 70s, I used to say that I wanted to be a phone operator when I grew up, so I could make her neighbors get off the phone. In this musical vein, I requested Herbie Hancock's "Rockit", which was 1983. A few years later a band called M/A/R/R/S had a song called "Pump Up the Volume" that I think y'all would also really enjoy. Definitely getting into the electronic funky sounds of the 80s. That was such a fantastic and diverse decade and a great time to be a high school/college kid!
My first concert - it was them, Whodini, and Run-DMC. Midnight Star went on first and wow. I knew and liked most of their songs. No Parking on the Dance floor was a huge hit. They were jamming and dancing and had everyone in the audience on their feet and dancing too. All the acts were truly great and so much fun but Midnight Star definitely the party started.
next for Midnight Star Star try “Freak-A-Zoid” (jay will love it), “Midas Touch” then for a different side to them do “Slow Jam” which obviously is a slow song lol
Now this is one hot number on the dance floor in the mid 80's! Yes Jay, Doing the Robot. Breakdancing was hot back then also .Aw, memories! Gotta react to Freak-A Zoid from them next. Two members of the band, Calloway Brothers formed a band later on simply called Calloway and had a smash hit "I Wanna Be Rich". React to that sometime. Thanks. 😎
Oooh Midnight Star has some jams: Freak-A-Zoid, Wet My Whistle, and Midas Touch. And slow jams: Slow Jam, and Feels So Good. Also this song reminds me that you haven't done any of the dance floor jams by Klymaxx yet, most notably Meeting In The Ladies Room, and Men All Pause.
Yay! Loved group back in the 80s! Yes, there was a party line back in the day. I don't remember exactly but I remember I think you had a certain number you could call and it would connect you to what was called a party line. You could basically pick up on other people's conversations and just either sit there and listen or you could actually start your own conversation and sometimes other people could hear you and sometimes they could not it was almost like dipping into other people's conversations and making friends at the same time. It was very strange very strange back then but yet would be considered today as being something like a chat room but on the phone
Yeah, this is the type of party line I remember from the 80’s…where you had to call a specific number to connect to it. I grew up in a city…maybe there was a difference between party lines in the suburbs/rural areas vs those in a city? I mean, I did not hear others talking whenever I just picked up the phone… I had to dial any number I wanted to connect to.
Welp, y'all are now ready for FREAK-A-ZOID.. the reason I bought this awesome album!~ :-)
I didn’t buy alotta records, but I got that!
It was Freak-A-Zoid that introduced me to Midnight Star 😊

The instrument they're using is a vocoder, which is different from a talkbox. There's also a voice changer from the 1930s called a Sonovox.
❤Thanks! Love ya'll
80's baby !!!!!
next for Midnight Star Star try “Freak-A-Zoid” (jay will love it), “Midas Touch” then for a different side to them do “Slow Jam” which obviously is a slow song lol
This is more 80s magic
Now this is one hot number on the dance floor in the mid 80's! Yes Jay, Doing the Robot. Breakdancing was hot back then also .Aw, memories! Gotta react to Freak-A Zoid from them next. Two members of the band, Calloway Brothers formed a band later on simply called Calloway and had a smash hit "I Wanna Be Rich". React to that sometime. Thanks. 😎
Well, got my cardboard and boom box and now, time to breakdance like a wounded turkey!
I mean, I did not hear others talking whenever I just picked up the phone… I had to dial any number I wanted to connect to.
i loved this song in high school, so fun to hear it again. We had so much great music like this, so fun!
You will love Herbie Hancock's "Rock it"
Some of the members were from West Michigan, Muskegon. The area code, 616, used to cover all of West Michigan counties along Lake Michigan.
Loved it, fun song ❤😊🇬🇧
