Villagers are really useful with this update. Give them an analyzer and they become a paleontologist and you can buy fossils and stuff from them.
Your original fossils and archeology playthrough like a decade ago is still one of my favorite RUclips memories.
Pro tip: if you hold control while underwater you can swim faster, just like running on land
Bestinslot, you can press the control button to swim faster underwater. It's a feature from newer minecraft updates. You can also press F when holding a torch to put it in your left hand, this means you can see with the torch and use your pick/sword at the same time. :D
I completely forgot about that, I even knew that the shaders had dynamic lighting but it didn't register that I could use the torches in my offhand
If you put an analyzer in a villagers house it will turn them into a palaeontologist and you can buy enchanting books that gives tools higher biofossil drop rates when you mine fossil blocks
BIS, I don't know if someone already told you, but you can use the actual bones (like the skull and legbones, etc...) in the analyser as well, which will give you a higher chance of getting the dinosaur that it's from
A little list of things i've noticed (others have probably said so already but just in case):
-I'd recommend making a shield, pulling it up blocks basically all damage, including creeper explosions and arrows.
-Holding a torch in your off hand while shaders are on will make you have a light source at all times in caves
-Sprint underwater to swim faster, just by pressing ctrl as usual, also make doors! placing a door underwater creates a pocket of air under the water and you can mine faster while your in it, also also the magma blocks that give off bubbles actually give you oxygen back if you stand on them, just hold shift to not take damage!
- You can use tar drops as a slime replacement
-While looting a chest and similar items are all spread out, you can double click one of them and it gets them all in one stack.

Okay so already a lot of people have given you some underwater mining tips but there are a few pretty important things that from what I've seen nobody has mentioned, so I'll try to compile a list of hopefully everything you need to know. In case anyone sees that I missed something important do let me know, I'll add it to the list.
The same way you run on land you can swim fast underwater and when you swim fast you can get into one block tall spaces.
The volcanic stone looking blocks with bubbles coming out of them give you breath if you're above them, although be careful when you stand directly on them because if you're not crouched they will start to cook you alive. For this reason I'd suggest just bringing a door with you if you have inventory space to spare. A door you can just easily place underwater and unless one of the mods changed how doors work, placing them will create a two block tall bubble of air that you can get inside and fear drowning no more. Also as you're not fully submerged when you are in that bubble you're going to mine at the normal speed as if your mining on land.
One unrelated tip to cave diving is that you can craft a shield in 1.18. which can block everything from skeleton arrows to creeper explosions. You can put the shield in your off hand and use it simultaneously with a weapon. The only problem with them is that if you block constantly in combat arrows and explosions can wear them down relatively quickly so I suggest bringing either some spares or just having the materials to craft them with you. Considering they require one piece of iron and a little bit of wood and the fact that you're going to be using both of those to make other tools, the second option seems like a better one to me. Also this one I'm not 100% sure if that's how it works, but pressing f should swap the object in your off hand with the object in your main hand so you can switch between shields and torches easily.

Tip for Caving: Hold your torch in your off-hand by pressing F so there will always be light around you! That way you can still use your tools while also being able to see!
You posted as I was finishing the first episode I cannot stress enough how excited I am, my New Year’s resolution was that this would be the year of the dinosaur (me returning to me roots) and there’s been so many cool dinosaur things coming out this year and then I find out fossils and archaeology is back??? Dream come true, and one of my favs is playing it this is gonna be the best year ever

You can also put any fossil skeleton bits in the extractor, theres a chance you will get dna from them

If you put the torches in your of hand slot, you won't have to scroll to them, and they'll always give off light.

I am by no means an expert but here are some useful tips
1. Try expiramenting with all the different mods (even if in creative) you never know which items would make your dinosaur journey easier (like the backpack you can upgrade to get more inventory to have easier mining trips)
2. If you have the create mod I've seen someone on the discord make a massive drill that went all the way to bedrock with a bunch of Analyzers hooked up to it and the result was a massive (I think more than double chest) inventory with a ton of DNA. Additionally you can automate a wheat, chicken, and cow farms for the creation of bio goo and make an autocrafter to constantly make it. I know this sounds overwhelming but create is fairly easy to pick up by holding W to see the function of every block.
3. You can use tar instead of slime which is much easier to find.

A small tip, if you build a shield it help with creepers and skeletons, as a sheild deflects arrows and weakens creeper explosion damage a little bit where a creeper explosion wont instantly kill you

one other way i found to make the culture vats early on is with coagulated blood, and to get that all you really need is a lot of sand, clay, and gravel to make seared brick blocks. The details are in the crafting info from the item search. and in the brown "Materials and Me" book you spawn with. then you can turn all that rotten flesh into blood with lava for fuel.
oh by crafting info i mean you click on coagulated blood in the item list and then the utility blocks you need on the left of the crafting menu it shows you

Lil tips for Fossils:
You can analize tar or find some permafrost and permafrosted meat that have high chances of giving DNA
The dinosaur parts (teeth, arms and stuff) can also give DNA when analyzed

Just fyi, hold the torches in your offhand(shield slot in inventory or just press f when holding them), itll keep everything lit while mining too and can be placed while you mine still
The backpack has tiered upgrades, Iron, Gold, Diamond, Netherite, up to Diamond you put the backpack in the center of the crafting table and the materials around it, for Netherite you use the smithing table, each upgrade increases the capacity by a full single chest.
You really struck gold with those DNAs, especially with Quetzalcoatlus.

Hey BestInSlot, if you havent already, I recommend making a shield, you will be able to block skeleton arrows and other attacks to give you an opening to fight back and help you stay alive and not burn through food so fast!
I have some advice. Slimes actually spawn at night in swamps. And depending in the moon's shift. It will increase the odds. On a full moon its max and when there is a new moon/no moon then none spawn at all.
Also another tip, if you want to get bio fossils passively, make or steal a sifter and just shove in boat loads of dirt, sand, or gravel and attach it to a hopper with a chest, you can yet Dominican amber aswell as the fossils
okay, i have been playing around with the mod and found the best way to get fossils, make a cobble generator using create mod, turn those cobble into gravel with the crusher, gravel is used for so many other part of the mod pack as well, gravel can be then used in the sifter to get fossil, also use them for the create mod sifter for ores
If you didn’t know, you can craft a shield, equip it in your left hand, and hold right-click to block arrows from those pesky skeletons!!
So the best dimension to go to for fossils I have personally found is the twilight forest in the hills there are a lot of different ores and plenty of fossils, but is also dangerous.

For mining underwater, just place a door. It makes an air pocket and you don’t get slowed down.
Quick little tip, since you have the create mod, something you can do to create slime is by making dough and crafting it with lime green dye can make you a slime ball.
8:48 a shield is what you're missing, they cost 1 iron and 6 wooden planks
26:09 you gave up wheat seeds , which gives herbivore feed and bread, which is one of the best easy foods in the game, for beetroot, which gives you pretty much nothing lol
Second episode: second tip, when you jump and at the same time hit enemy you do critical so skeleton is two/three hit kill with iron sword 2 with axe
you should definitely craft armor and a shield, a shield will block all damage, including creeper explosions in the direction youre facing when youre right clicking
you can put it in your offhand and it still works
I noticed you have a ton of metal to smelt. I'm not sure how familiar you are with create, but once you get started with it there's this really powerful setup where you blow air through lava with an encased fan and it act as a smelter, anything in front of it will get blasted into its smelted form with zero fuel required, you can also cook food with campfires, wash items with water and haunt items with soul fire.
You can get really creative with it too, I toyed around with a factory in a creative world that would automatically grind wheat into flower, wash the flower into dough, then cook the dough into bread. It's a complicated mod but it's allot of fun to mess around with
Now creeper is BestInSlot worst enemy lol
By the way, Just Enough Items doesn't have custom compatibility with F/A anymore so recipes like analyzing and cultivating will be missing. The devs recommend people to switch to Roughly Enough Items which is the same mod but available for both Fabric and Forge
Hey BIS just a heads up carrots are a top tier early game food, they grow quick and give you multiple per harvest. You can either find them in villages or as a rare drop from zombies
If you hover over something in your inventory, one of your mods allows you to see recipes for something by pressing R on it, or crafting uses by pressing U
You can use tar droplets to make the Culture vat too

Biggest piece of advice i can give you is to craft a shield! You can put in in your other hand and use it to black attacks and arrows! Will help greatly with skeletons and also can block creeper explosions.

I don’t know if you can find normal slime, but on your map there is a slime island somewhere, which should be up in the sky. It’s modded slime, but I think it should work.
Alternatively, tardrops (made from a bucket of tar) can be used I believe.
Just gonna put this out for you all the Dino bones that you have are actually able to be put in to the analyzer and if you get lucky you will actually get that species so just putting that out. I’ve been watching you since I was 9🙂

If you wanna place torches while mini g or fighting, you can put the torches in your off-hand and still place them down while mining, building, fighting, etc
The fossil rarity splits me. I think with the way the new Minecraft caves are (twisting, long, lots of open space and air/water blocks), it's really hard to justify the full change. I'd prefer they changed one or the other- rarity OR chance to be DNA. Both is a little much! I bumped up my ore rate by like 50% in the config and I've had a much better time. I hope they bump them just a bit in the base mod. Paleo as an enchant is nice, but I don't feel like mining for an hour for diamonds before I get any substantial choice in first dino. Especially considering the fossil split, I almost always end up finding JUST shale due to how caves are now. Overall not an awful change (dna was VERY easy to get before) but! I feel it needs tweaking. Also I've found permafrost really frustrating to get now 😔

There’s a potion that makes mobs drop slimes when they die, you can then kill the slimes to get slime balls
Tip, if you go into the map settings by pressing m and the cog in the top right, you can adjust the entity radar to show icons so you can see what dot is what, and you can enable nametags in eneties that dont have icons
Have you noticed some bubble columns inside the underwater caves? Those come from Magma blocks at the bottom. If you stand on them while pressing shift you can breathe underwater forever.
if you do use a boat to get of the island i would make one similair in JW:CT at the start of season 2, so like putting the dinosaurs in containers and sailing of to the mainland.

I finally got a Galli and a Dilophosaur
Don't read this if you don't want backseating, but it seems like the best way to find slime balls is to look around in the overworld for tar pits. They have white tents around them with a villager inside. I won't spoil what happens at the tar pits but you can get slime balls from them pretty much 100% of the time I believe. I literally just installed the modpack myself and maybe there are better ways for slime balls, but this is the best way I know of rn from watching other channels.
btw I've been watching your channel for over a decade at this point, I think I got into your videos either through your earlier F&A series or Jurassic World The Game or something, but either way you've been one of the few creators I've stuck with for pretty much all these years. Even into my late 20s your videos bring me a lot of comfort and laughs.

No tar nearby but you can also cook jellyfish added by the Aquaculture 2 mod and that turned out to be a great way to get slimes!
My first dna this time around was an allosaurus. Sadly can’t hatch mine yet cause I don’t have an enclosure or enough food for one yet
