a note that some people use wheelchairs even though they can technically stand/walk bc doing so for extended periods of time is either painful, difficult, or leaves them bedridden afterwards. not all wheelchair users are paraplegic!

I swear to God. People who fake disabilities are such a huge reason that people who actually need help and treatment have a harder time getting it. Not to mention the people who are disabled often still can walk some, it's just painful, and a lot of people don't understand that not every person in a wheelchair is completely unable to walk. We don't have a lot of good education about what being disabled actually means, and unfortunately that won't change soon. I think we need RUclips and other video platforms to step up and add to their rules that you can't post videos faking disabilities because of the damage it causes. youtube already made it illegal to post faking being an employee and also impersonation, so this should be the next step. That, and food waste videos.
Fun fact, in the 90’s my grandma had a wheelchair in her garage. One day the family got together and my cousins got a tape recorder. We went to a four way intersection in the neighborhood. And filmed some pranks on the neighbors. One of them was, the broken brake. Solo cast Plot, get going across the street when a car is in sight. Pretend like you can’t stop and hit the curb and rag doll out of the wheelchair like you’re paralyzed. Shit was the funniest watching my cousin tell the person it happens and that he doesn’t need help. Then the person just sat there and was like I will wait until you get back in your chair so my cousin then proceeds to get in the chair without moving his lower half of his body. The other scene was, the bully. This had me and my cousin staring in it while the other cousin filmed it. We would wait for a car to come around then run up to the one in the wheel chair and dump them out of it, and run off with the chair. Lady screams at me from her car I am calling the cops. Apparently she lived two houses from this intersection and literally almost called the cops. Luckily cellphones were for rich people back then and she didn’t get to call the cops in time.
An older man i knew when i was a kid had to get a wheelchair when i was about 7/8. He could walk, but maybe only to the end of his driveway. Idc if you think it's fake, better to be wrong about that than accidentally hurt someone actually disabled because of your self righteousness.
fyi- most people in wheelchairs can actually walk for short amounts of time, but use wheelchairs due to the pain or fatigue walking causes them. so don’t assume someone’s faking just because they can walk and use a wheelchair/ are ambulatory wheelchair users. disability is complicated and often not obvious!!
