  • Autoclitics: 4 Things to Know in 2021
This is the last video in our series about Skinner's verbal behaviour.
Skinner created the verbal operants which are:
    Mands
    Echoics
    Tacts
    Intraverbals
    Autoclitics
    What are Autoclitics?
Autoclitics are a complex verbal operant. They modify or give further detail about the meaning of the other verbal operants in a sentence.
In the sentence "I think that it's going to snow tomorrow.", the phrase 'I think' is an autoclitic because it refers to the speaker's certainty of having snow tomorrow.
    How do we teach Autoclitics?
The research is still out on the best way to teach them. What we do know is that it's important not to teach them too early.
Learners need to have very robust mand and tact repertoires before we begin introducing autoclitics.
When teaching autoclitics, avoid using carrier phrases like:
    I want
    I see
    I hear
Because they contribute to rote responding.
How long will it take to learn to use autoclitics?
It's impossible to tell. However, it is clear that with solid foundational skills and lots of practice it is possible to master most skills.
    Why do we teach autoclitics?
Understanding this verbal operant and using it correctly will enhance a learner's ability to communicate.
By understanding the speaker's meaning more clearly they will be better able to respond to mands and tacts.
Using autoclitics allows a speaker to be more clearly understood and helps others to act on their mands and tacts.
