  • In 1834 Sir Robert Peel formally announced that the Tory party he led would accept the outcome of the bitter struggle over the passage of the 1832 Great Reform Act. This formed part of a speech given to electors in Peel's constituency in 1834, a speech that became known as the Tamworth Manifesto. Some historians credit this speech with establishing the principles of the modern Conservative party. In the 1835 election, Peel's Tory party were successful and formed the new government.
