@@AlexTrain5249 It wasn't salvaged, it's the same whistle 3254 has always had, however, I guess they didn't properly clean/service it until the 1990 operating year, as the last time 3254's whistle sounded like this was 1989. I personally prefer the whistle sounding like this, it's unique. But that's just my opinion.
After the first short blast is what the engineers do something I like to call the Crossing Whistle or Crossing Horn. It consists of 2 regular blasts, 1 short blast, and 1 long blast. I’m not sure why they use that in that sort of way, but all across America and Canada they do it. Idk about Mexico. They might. They blow the whistle when there obviously coming up to a crossing. And when they reach the whistle post on the side of the rails, usually a big 3 foot tall stick with a small red thing in the middle, and sometimes a sign with a W on it for whistle. And all this information came from a 14 y/o kid who’s been fascinated by trains ever since he first saw one. Hi how are ya? And when I was a kid, I always tried to draw trains as I remember, not just a box with windows and wheels with smoke coming out the top. And sometimes in class I would remember the UP 3985 and sometimes move my legs in the motion to the piston rods I think they’re called going back and forward. Sometimes I didn’t do that really cool connection with a rod coming out the sidestep going down to the wheels. I really love that part lol.
If you go to the channel "Hyce" here on YT you will find out that in the USA (at least in colorado) that the whistle effect you are discribing, actually is for the grade crossing. Back in the day the codes for the whistles were written down in the timetable and were company wide the same, as the whistle was used for warning outsiders and aslo is used for comunication with a locomotive behind or in front if doubleheading a train, or simply to comunicate with a conductor or a brakeman on the train.
Mike G Wait I’m trying to look at videos of the Canadian National 3254 but none of them show it with this whistle. Maybe you could know a good source as to where I can hear this CN 3254’s whistle?

Actually it's a Canadian whistle. Specifically, it's a fouled Canadian National 5 Chime, recorded off of CN 3254 in 1988, apparently. From 1987 til 1989 this is what the locomotive sounded like while working at Steamtown. In 1990, they fixed the whistle, so it would blow properly. And the engine hasn't run for many years now.
I use this to scare my kids they think they hear a train all the time although we live nowhere near a train they say it's a ghost train so I set up Bluetooth speakers hidden throughout the house and play the train noise and they freak out hahaha and an LOL

Is there a possibility that the whistle was salvaged or have a schematic for that particular whistle system? Also by fouled you mean broken, yes?
Fouled usually means it’s malfunctioning but it doesn’t mean it’s completely broken. I’m unsure if the whistle was salvaged from somewhere.
