Gotta thank you, Scout. I'm to the age where I don't hop to it for any task. So, I was working on a car in the drive and when I had to get up, I rolled out from under the car, but I stopped and lay in the grass on my back and, with you in mind, I looked at the sky for a few minutes. It had been so long, I had forgotten the simple pleasure of looking at the sky.

Bon-Ami stopped making any liquid products in 2014 but they still make their famous 1886 Formula cleaner which contains feldspar and tallow. It’s great for mirrors and glass, but only on older auto glass or windows without coatings. Used as a light paste you can clean or polish just about any smooth surface. It used to come in a “bar” form but now only as a powder; however it works the same. If not available locally it’s no doubt on Amazon or on a web search. Like that 1500 Watt Bulb, great stuff!

Love the skit. I had to share it with my wife! Being self taught there are big voids in my knowledge base so it is great to go over some basic information. I will be dressing my wheels to run true.
I just re watched your two videos on lubrication and found very helpful. You could redo them into one as you already have a lot of the video footage just add and edit! They were Fantastic and very useful videos.
Industrial Westinghouse bulbs are as rare as a thousand dollar bill. I purchased two huge industrial fixtures with a ballast and the huge bulbs gave $5 for them I never powered them on I was too unsure to do it. I ended up selling them on eBay for $300 each so there must have been a big demand for them then. However, I but just bought a led light that screws into a socket and gives off 18,400 lumens that is bright.

Used to change large bulbs like that at the hospital in our parking garage. But I think they were only 500. We used to change bulbs out on each floor after a certain amount of time. We were ok to take them home. I still have a few. I liked the bulbs on our helicopter pad. The filament in those were thick. We had one guy that it was his whole job to go around the hospital and change burnt out bulbs. Stay safe and healthy my friend. Thanks

Very entertaining way to kick off the weekend. The large light bulb reminds me of the ones my father would bring home from working at the power company (rotated or bad street light bulbs) by the case. We would take them down to the railroad tracks far from town and have a shooting gallery about once a year. Normal activity for the early 60’s. 👍

1000 watts! Wow, I've never seen a bulb that big! A cool story about the variac, Eddie Van Halen used to power his guitar amps with a variac. He would under power the vacuum tubes to get a unique distortion sound. For a long time nobody could figure out how he got his "brown" sound.

Good times with light bulbs! On the wheel hazards, back in The early 70s my brother was using my father’s wheel and it came apart and hit him in the forehead and earned him a trip to the emergency room. The injuries turned out to be superficial but looked terrible right after it happened. I think it was in 1971 or so.

As always (so far) lots of good info. A great use for that Bon Ami (and the bar) is house windows. Aluminum screens in storm windows have a tendency to leave a kind of oxidize film on windows which had my parents frustrated. For a change I was able to educate them about a product they had but didn't realize it could do.

Reports are coming in of a grid failure on the east coast. Experts have narrowed the power failures to Queens, NY. Officials seemed powerless. Grinders are to be respected right John? I've certainly learned my lessons on them and cooling while grinding. I have the same grinder the wife bought me, the ol' Craftsman, I used it so much, I broke the switch. The light is a plus. Sorry to monopolize your channel, Scout, but you might dig this. When I went to school, in the middle of the main building was an Ol' Skool Power Lab. Large motors and generators japanned black, connected by thick leather belting and all set on a floor of red quarry tile. The kinda place Tesla would have felt at home. The loads were LARGE banks of 1000 watt lamps. Sad to say, before I had an opportunity to play around with that heavy equipment, some jagoff thought it would be cool to replace all that irreplaceable stuff with a Semiconductor lab. I took my "power lab" sitting at a table with a washing machine motor in front of me.

When I was a kid we would go down to the local town dump. The town would regularly throw out the burned out street light bulbs, and also the traffic signal bulbs. They were packed in the original boxes. The guys would change out the burned out ones and put them back in the padded cases. We'd
spend the day shooting the bulbs with my BB gun. We would set up many around the dump as a shooting course. And also a few of us would hold them by the base and they were shot out of our hands. That was exciting!
Try that today and you would be up on murder charges.
Every now and again there would be a large pile of spray paint cans dumped there. They were rejects from some paint factory. They were set up on old hot water heaters and shot with my .22. A lit candle was placed along side and when the propellant hit the flame it was quite spectacular. Whirling, flaming cans of paint.
P.S hope you used SPF 50 around that bright light!

Great video! Have you considered rigging up a rotating reflector/mirror for the bulb so that you'd have your very own lighthouse / stage lighting effect? Also do you have any special tips on how to put away the steel wool so it won't rust after using it? I try to wring it out and set it somewhere where the air can circulate and dry it out without letting it rust. But I wonder if you have any other tips.

  • @patjohnson3100

Great video. Those grinder tips were very useful. Thanks for emphasizing safety around power tools. You have to respect the power in grinders, saws etc. I have never seen an incandescent bulb that size, although I have some mogul - base bulbs with different brightness levels, also some reading light incandescent bulbs with mogul bases. Just one of those bulbs you have could not only light an entire house, it could heat it as well. I can just hear the electric grid groan with strain as that 1000 water is turned on. Very glad it lit up. How old is that bulb?

If the bon ami is hard to find or no longer available, I recently discovered sprayway brand window cleaner. It's also ammonia free and it doesn't evaporate quickly, works enormously better than any other glass cleaner I've used. It also smells really really good. Like not cleaner smell, just a good smell. It's not even expensive, because it goes really far. If you haven't tried it, I really recommend it. Totally agree on the 0000 steel wool
