If you’ve never wondered just what the tuba brings to thus wondefrull band just listen to whsat tTodd does on this number. He’s clearly the backbone of this remarkable jazz bandIncredible talent and dedication.
domila, you are right. This 'Once in a While' was composed in 1927 by W H Butler . As you can hear, it has an Introduction and then a 16-bar first theme (00:09 and revisited from 01:05), and also a 32-bar [16 + 16] main theme (first played 00:28, and later [with Craig leading] at 01:23, and then [with Barnabus leading] from 01:59, and then [with Max leading] from 02:36, and then [with Shaye leading - against stop chords] from 03:10, and finally with full ensemble from 03:49, with the little tag). To sum up, in this video they play the first theme twice and the main theme six times. Note how two-bar breaks are taken on bars 15 and 16 of the main theme - usually on a signal from Shaye; and also sometimes on bars 31 and 32 as a soloist takes over from his predecessor. There is coincidentally a QUITE different song called 'Once in a While' , composed in 1937 by Edwards and Green. It is a lovely ballad of 32 bars - a-a-b-a in structure, usually played at about half the speed of the Butler composition.
