It's great to have someone who actually reviews retro sports games. I don't blame retro channels that skip over the sports games if it's not their thing - no value in that. But John is clearly a fan who can make some solid recommendations for the genre.
There are many sports games that have value and are fun today. The problem especially in the 16 bit era was that there were so many sports games being made. The ranking videos have made me go through and try to objectively look at these games. I have found a few this way that I respect even more now.
It seems, that Acclaim was in the 90s, what THQ was in the 2000s (I grew up with quite some THQ games back then, like Juiced 2, Spongebob Battle for Bikini Bottom and Spongebob the Movie on the PS2, Sonic Advance on GBA and Saints Row 2 on PS3).
Why is almost every Acclaim title have something unintentionally scary in it? Whether it be a certain scene, a certain character, or sfx, or etc.. there is at least 1 unintentional scary ass thing in a Acclaim game.
Great video (I look forward to these ranking videos every week). Delighted to see True Lies get some love - it’s a great game and it’s definitely underrated. If I remember correctly, you could customize the player attributes in College Slam although you were only able to use what was already given to the player.
Yeah I was fortunate to get Mortal Kombat 2 on the SNES instead of the Genesis after recently seeing what it was like on the Genesis. The sound effects, music, and voice samples were epic on the SNES version.
@@RedTabletTalk I see that as an adult, but as a 12 year that got this day one on Genesis, I was pretty ticked cause I felt there was no excuse to cut so much out.
Wrestlemania the Arcade Game. I remember going into a Blockbuster many years ago and buying it used and really enjoying it. Still own that copy today. It does have all the characters of the arcade and dosen't have the slowdown of the snes version AND allows more on screen characters at a time vs snes.
Spot goes to Hollywood and Stargate are certainly popular with me. Spot even has password saves which balances out the difficulty. Have nostalgia for virtual Bart even it's frustrating. It gives you a lot of variety to experiment with.
I still have love for acclaim, simply because of the huge presence they were when I was growing up. They did make a lot of mediocre games, but since their brand was tied to so many big name franchises, they are still very relevant in my memories.
I have to say Acclaim was definitely a part of my childhood I look at it like this there were hits and misses of course the WWF games will always good to me I do like the mortal Kombat games that are claim did produce and also I remember playing just dread but I played it on the super Nintendo that being said I did not know they had an itchy and scratchy game wow.
Like a lot of north american games that got published in this era, nice ideas, good graphics, lot of talent, but bad direction. The gameplay is often rough and lacks a lot of polish. Game of that era had gameplay refinement late in the dev cycle because prototyping wasn't easy to do. To me it feels like, once the game seems to be somewhere, the management or the publishers considered the game completed and rushed it to market (I experienced it at Ubisoft several years ago). Acclaim and Accolade to me are the symbol of that way of thinking. I understand a lot more the stance of Blizzard during these years when people asked when the game would be out and always replied, we did very good in the past, be confident, but it's going to be done when it's done, not before. I like this Acclaim ranking John... like a lot. I waited for this one.
I NEED to say this…. THANKS MAN for giving MKII an S, I thought I was the only one who definitely love this game, Am just tired of my friends saying “SNES version is far superior” and I understand why they like SNES version better but that doesn’t make GENESIS version a bad game. You won I lifetime subscriber my friend.
Scooby doo. I really liked that game. Very cool concept and gameplay...I'll give it an A. The seperation Anxiety game. I thought it was a lot better than Maxinum Carnage because it was 2 players coop and it had a password system which is really important to put into games....I wish these games were 4 player coop. I'll give that one a A also.
I really liked both Justice League Task Force & Konami's TMNT: Tournament Fighters on Genesis. But the absurd difficulty (especially of the latter!) made it hard to really get into.
If I could pick one arcade cab to own, it would be MK2. I had a Snes, my step brother had a Genesis and we would have MK2 playing on both simultaneously. We would switch between consoles, competing against friends and eachother. Console wars in the 90's. I always liked the speed of the Genesis version, but graphics and sound on snes.
You may be wrong on the Maximum Carnage I believe until you reach Venom then after you can play 2 players? Or maybe im getting a Mandella Effect when I would play it with my cousins.
i did have a few acclaim games for the genesis and the sega cd. 1 was the mortal kombat. i think that acclaim even made a few games for the 32x as well. it's been so long ago
I think you were a little high on MKII [that ai is insanely cheap] but I mostly agree on the rest. I love NBA Jam Te [esp on the 32x]. College slam is basically a "hidden gem". I picked it up for $4 and find it really fun! An improvement over nba jam in many ways. Now I just need to get Demolition Man!

The background for the first Spiderman game shown here reminds me of Duke Nukem 1 and 2 haha
If I remember correctly, you could customize the player attributes in College Slam although you were only able to use what was already given to the player.
I for one was always let down my most of Acclaim's release. I was so let down as a kid when Mortal Kombat 2 was missing so many voice samples.
Yeah I was fortunate to get Mortal Kombat 2 on the SNES instead of the Genesis after recently seeing what it was like on the Genesis. The sound effects, music, and voice samples were epic on the SNES version.
I think the Genesis version had it’s charm too, though.
@@RedTabletTalk I see that as an adult, but as a 12 year that got this day one on Genesis, I was pretty ticked cause I felt there was no excuse to cut so much out.
9:05 I really enjoyed playing Scooby Doo Mystery with my friends back in 1999 or tho.
Wrestlemania the Arcade Game. I remember going into a Blockbuster many years ago and buying it used and really enjoying it. Still own that copy today. It does have all the characters of the arcade and dosen't have the slowdown of the snes version AND allows more on screen characters at a time vs snes.
7:46 Here we go! SPORTS TIME...oh wait, this isn't TripleJump.
I have an Acclaim "Jeopardy" Sega Genesis game. Case, manual, and cartridge that says Acclaim on the back.
Sold my genesis collection years ago. Only kept 15 games and Demolition Man was one of them. Game is amazing
I actually liked batman forever once I figured the weird controls out. I also played it on SNES so that might be a tad different
remember the game Shak Fu ?! It was not very popular, but also an interesting enough fighting game mine. loved it mk3u wrestlemania and shaq fu
Warlock D? What? One of my favorite sega games
Demolition man is a very good game. I was surprise when I played the game back then as I got it of funcoland for $5.
Acclaim also bought out LJN. "Laughing Joking Numb nuts." LOL😂
That Batman Forever game used to piss me off figuring out how to get to the next floor. Lol
I'll give that one a A also.
would you play on an all button arcade controller for the SNES?
John, thanks for playing all the rubbish games as well as the good ones.
I keep revisiting these lists to find games I want to pick up. Also my most hated Genesis game is that Aerosmith shooter.
I never knew there was a Genesis Stargate game. I will definitely check it out now!
@John Hancock I Have "Batman Forever" For My Mini Sega and It's a Little Tricky But I'll Get Used To Playing It and I Do Plan To Get Wrestlemania The Arcade Game Someday As a Fan of Wrestling!
First- props to this, BTW. I for one can't wait for the big one- First party SEGA games
This video took nearly 20 hours to do, so I am going to have to think about how I am going to break up Sega to do it right.
@@johnhancockretro I totally get it. 50+ games would mean a 90+min video (and at least 20-30 times the editing time). However you choose to break it down, I'm sure it will be fantastic.
