SID CAESAR: Nan Hires a Maid [THE COMMUTERS] (CAESAR'S HOUR, Jan 17 1955)

  • Another classic full sitcom-length "Commuters" sketch, Sid's answer to "The Honeymooners". In this sketch, Nan decides to hire a maid-- who turns out to be a lusciously beautiful young blonde. The maid is played by one of the quintessential dumb blondes of the 1950s and 1960s, Barbara Nichols, hilarious as always. Nichols appeared many times on the Jack Benny Show as his low class sometime-girlfriend, stealing every show was in!

How do I speak to the people of this channel? We cannot thank you enough for all of these hilarious and time-stopping videos. Nothing was ever funnier more consistently than these plays. I got to work with Sid doing Last of the Red Hot Lovers and with Imogene and hubby King Donovan and their two wolfhounds in, I think Plaza Suite. I learned so much. At six years old, memorizing every move Howey Morris made as Uncle Goopy, I said, "That's what I wanna do." At 70 on Wednesday, it's still the only thing I ever did right. Mr. Reiner has been the single torchbearer for so long, no less funny than anyone on television, and on top of his game until the end. Whatever else needs to be thrown down the drainpipe of dissolution, despair, or decay, these will remain. In short, thank you.

That would be wgw and me. Glad you are enjoying the videos. It speaks to the comedic genius of all concerned that the sketches are still funny 60+ years later. You worked with Sid and Imogene? Wow. I am, to say the least, envious. When was this--70s? 80s? I'd love to hear your impressions. They were the best male-female comedy duo ever on TV, hands down. Thanks for your comments--and Happy Birthday! --kjh

Sid Caesar: Your Show of Shows / Caesar's Hour / Admiral Broadway Revue Thanks, Folks. You must have some great knowledge of these shows. Are you a fan of any others. You're right, nobody was funnier. I was in Dinner Theatre for one year in a fancy new one that opened in 1977 and closed in '78. I don,t talk about it much anymore because most don't know who they are. I have a good story all around. You have inspired me to do a blog about it all. You will be first to get a link. Thanks! (You can msg me with your names or withfictitious ones I can mention on myVidpoddicast, coming late August. That's on facebook, Weemus Studio 2020 or my own page by searching my name. Ya'll know me, I'm DuFFy OdUm.

We were huge fans of the show, and always paid particular attention to Howie Morris. I'm surprised he doesn't get as much notice as Sid and Carl---they were all great, but Howie was a little different due to his great ability with not only the usual comedic stuff but his physical pliability. He was absolutely hilarious, and I kick myself for not ever writing him or contacting him in some way to express how much we enjoyed him, although I imagine he probably got a lot fan mail. I certainly hope so so he knew how much he was appreciated. I did get to work with some Sid Caesar alumni--Carl Reiner, Mel Brooks and Woody Allen. They couldn't have been nicer. Carl actually let me direct a brief bit for his film FATAL INSTINCT, which was a totally unexpected thing I just walked into. They were all comedy greats to me, and to the generation who grew up with them. (You also got to meet/work with Imogene Coca! ---another super talent. I wonder how many people may remember King Donovan?---he was an SF fan, I've been told, and certainly was/is memorable in two science fiction films that stick in our minds--the classic INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS and the underrated MAGNETIC MONSTER. So many great memories and connections! Thanks for the comments. And to this site for posting this!

Nanette Fabray--what a treasure. Her later appearance on tv only hinted at the range of her talent.

No cue card reading, no political humor, no lame acting. This was during the golden age of TV. I’m watching Sid Caesar for the first time. I’ve known of him all my life but never watched his TV show. The clips of his variety show are very funny.

I forgot how great Sid Caesar was! Plus Carl Reiner. What’s the name of the third guy? He was on The Nutty Professor (Lewis version) and Andy Griffith. My parents used to rent Caesars tapes when I was a kid, not to mention my grandparents watched him.

Howie Morris. He was hilarious. Never quite achieved the recognition that Reiner did, but sure was a very very talented guy. He was our favorite when we were growing up watching this stuff, which is saying a lot considering the company!

Howard Morris is most remembered now as Ernest T Bass in the Andy Griffith Show, but I think he rose to fame in Your Show of Shows.
