My sister and I (mixed race, mum white, dad black) used to sometimes go to the Robertson's factory back in the 70s in our dad's lorry (dad was a long distance lorry driver).
We always loved going there as there was this man (probably the foreman) who would come over to us and tease us by always asking us why we had a rat in our lorry (Jack Russell terrier). We would always start laughing at him and loudly exclaim that it wasn't a rat it was a dog!
He would argue with us for a bit whilst dad was sorting out the load, then he'd laughingly say his goodbyes, have a quick chat with my dad then we'd set off back on the road.
Anyway on one occasion he came over waving 2 Golliwog rag dolls at us and asked us if we wanted them.
We were ded excited about getting a new doll and yelled YES PLEASE!!!.
So he then asked my dad if it was okay to give them to us. I remember Dad eyeing us up and down for a few seconds to keep us in suspense, then he said "go on then!".
I loved that golly dolly for probably about 3 years until mum forced us to pass them down to our nieces who were a few years younger than us 😭😭.
My dad never forgot that man and over the years used to talk about him with fondness.
    So do I 💚
    It's aaaaa dog!!! 😍

It's important to realise this was made in the UK not in the deep south. There just wasn't the same sort of class/race struggle until more recently, to many people in the UK this was just a cartoon character no more offensive than Popeye the Sailor Man is a caricature of a white man.
But who ever was called a "Popeye" for being white? That is the distinction, how a benign intent was warped for a racist agenda.

Historically, golliwogs were the dolls of Egyptian children. When servicemen who were stationed over there brought them back for their children, they were very popular and the toy companies were very quick to notice this and cash in. It was never meant to be anything racist, it was just another fictional toy like a teddy bear or gnome, which was hugely popular in its time.

@@parker-boy98 It's "blackface" when the intention is for a person of another race to be impersonating a member of a black race-- what commercial did YOU watch where that's happening...?
Furthermore, Golliwogs were ORIGINALLY intended as friendly, fairly intelligent children's characters not unlike a gnome or a fairy, and later had their image CO-OPTED for racism due to certain unfortunate resemblances.
The woman who wrote the first book had a doll as a child-- it was hand made, one of a kind, and sported rabbit's fur as it's hair.
She herself loved her old doll so much, that when she became an author she essentially wrote her old doll as a kind of magical being.
The story was popular with children and had sequels. The characters began to be mass produced as pins, rag dolls, advertisements like this one-- BECAUSE THEY WERE SIMPLY ACCEPTED AS A PIECE OF CULTURE NO DIFFERENT FROM DISNEY OR LOONEY TUNES.
Now both of THOSE companies ironically made racist depictions in their history and have mostly hidden or downplayed them while still infusing large parts of our culture--
But these characters originally weren't intended as anything but a type of children's myth.
      It's all true.

Neither myself or anyone else is declaring that you "Can't say 'golliwog' anymore." But rather, pointing out the obvious (a friendly, social heads-up if you will) that if you use the term, it comes at a cost. Many people will think you're either unwittingly stupid/ignorant or willfully racist. If you're fine with people making such assessments of you, then that's cool. You do you. But that's just how society works. That's the reality, and whining about change isn't going to stop change. People just don't like saying the term "wog" for obvious reasons.

It’s not because of political correctness. It’s because of the racist history that it had. Images like that was made to dehumanize and mock black People. So don’t you dare tell us what’s not offensive to us.

The sad thing is was that this little black Gentleman was a fine upstanding cartoon character.
He was also one of the most talented as most children in the 1960s and 70s knew. Football, Rugby, Golf, Tennis, he could play them all.
Policeman or Astronaut, he could be those as well. You could get the badges and figurines showing it. However, his real forte was music as he could play any instrument in an orchestra or Pop Group. Maybe it was that, plus seeing groups like the Jackson Five and people like Jimmi Hendrix on TV made me think as a child that all black people were musicians. What a terrible stereotype for a child to have.
I wonder if there would have been the same fuss if the Robertsons mascot in the cartoon had been called Fred, like the Homepride mascot whose only talent seemed to be grading flour ?
Finally some music illustrating peoples hopes and attitudes back in the 1970s ruclips.net/video/zAWn4FO1MOw/видео.html

@@voiskumbeaver3285 The people who miss the point are the ones who put a warning about a racist stereotype at the start of a re-run of 1970s sit-com "The Good Life".
What was it? Margo was wearing an Apron with this jam companies mascot on it.
When we were in Barcelona a shop was selling caricature figurines of the Barcelona football team. Guess what the Black players looked like. I'll give you clue; it wasn't Charlie Brown or Bart Simpson.
The person who did create a harmful racist stereotype was Enid Blyton, who portrayed characters like the one in the advert as car thieves rather than as sportsmen, musicians, or jam connoisseurs. Given the success of Noddy that was very unfortunate.
