I’m glad to see there is some instruction out there on the foundational development of painting surface. I also use the same ground, but i use it straight from the can because I want a texture on my canvas other than the fabric. I’ve read before and even Gamblin suggests thinning as desired, but it’s really up to the artist to decide how much texture they want on the surface.
With my canvases, I do pretty much the same with the PVA, but with the ground, I just scoop it out with a painting knife and dab it all over, then use a wide drywall knife to spread it out evenly. One I have an even coat, I use a gesso brush to work a series of patterns to obtain my own desired ground texture. I usually do two coats of ground, and rarely do any sanding.
Also worth mentioning, if you want to save your OMS a bit, wipe the brush or knife off with a wrap thoroughly before cleaning it with OMS, you’ll use a lot less solvent if you can get as much out before. Cheers and happy painting!

Yes, I also do not dilute to get more of the thickness and texture, and I use at least two layers, because I just liked the beautiful, thick, rich ground layer. Before I begin on creating my Masterpieces👨🏽‍🎨🎨😊

Thank you for a very informative video on the intricate details of oil painting that nobody really talks about. There's a lot of misleading information out there(gesso vs ground), or over simplified instructions; you mentioned some very good details on actual drying times that are longer than most newbies like myself would guess.

    this is so helpful!
As a working artist who uses many large scale canvases for my work, I have been using my own mixtures of acrylic gesso and paints for my grounds, but I just purchased my first can of gambling ground, as I have LOVED so many of their paints and other products for the past 4/5 years.
I have been looking for a more in-depth tutorial from someone who has worked with this ground and paints in a large scale format, and needless to say, I am so so happy to have found this video!
thanks so much for sharing this 💖
