  • Planning a solo canoe trip down the River Wye with your dog might initially seem fraught with problems but here’s a few easy cut price solutions to use. Firstly Tresseck Campsite at Hoarwithy is a perfect midway base to use. It’s a convenient picturesque site by the river, sensibly priced with boat launching included for guests and well maintained facilities, fires are permitted, cafe does breakfast and coffee some weekends plus there’s a pub, village shop (not open some Mondays and Tuesdays) and bus stop next to the road entrance.
Then Hye Bus Taxi service is good for getting your canoe to the actual start point and they take dogs but the long drive is expensive (£50) if not shared.
The good news is local buses also connect Tresseck Camp site to Hereford, Ross on Wye, and Symonds Yat Monmouth at a fraction of the cost of taxis. You may get lucky and blag a lift from Wye Canoes who are based on site if they have their own boats to transport that day. You can usually arrange to leave your canoe at landings, campsites on the river and canoe hire firms storage areas.

You can put in at Glasbury on the down river side, up river you're technically not allowed to put in but you just need to walk under the bridge & you're good to go. I confirmed this at the canoe hire company at Glasbury & actually put in on the down side of the bridge with no problems. Its all about the council having to do an environmental impact study on the up river side, the other down river side of the bridge isn't anything to do with them so no restrictions.
It's very pretty on this section but the river really meanders & can be shallow in places requiring you to haul over the shingles in lower water conditions not a major problem but can slow you down, I underestimated my timings & the distance to bycross campsite & only just made it before dark absolutely knackered. Probably best to split this section in two especially if you're inexperienced &/or using an inflatable as they're slower than solid kayaks. If the river has decent flow you might be ok to do the whole stretch but it's much more enjoyable to take your time & take in the scenery & wildlife.

Did you do most of the trip without the fins on? - doing it in may in a similar canoe. Cheers

I took the fin off within an hour as it had been very dry and water was shallow. A day or so down stream and there was more water.
