- Re-organising for the spring!! We are moving structures this week... shifting the brassica cage up to next to the fruit cage (get the cages together) and also moving the arches around to form a central tunnel!
Here is the video about why i grow my beans up arches: • What to grow Beans up ...
And a link to buy the same arches that i use: amzn.to/3TThyi7

I do appreciate the harvest to kitchen segments; it helps to fill in my severe lack of education in what to do with all the cool things I try to grow.
Hahha, can be bloody tricky sometimes can't it! Hopefully i'll be able to include more when i have a functioning kitchen again!
I’ve been watching your vlogs for a couple months now so if you do this already, apologies, but I think it’s a great idea showing a meal prep using the ingredients you’re growing! The risotto looked lovely too!
Thank you! I'm hoping to be able to include a lot more when i have a functioning kitchen again!
Kelsey Annie Joy ,honey dew, night butterfly, american sunset, a,ce summer sunset are examples of Dahlia's i like . Ofcourse i love the bishops childeren specialy the pink and yellow once . Looking foward to your sea of dahlia's. You can always put some zinnia's in between , thats i nice combo as well. Lots of love from Belgium xx
Cima di rapa, oh my that is an acquired taste... I don't think I'm gonna be growing that any more 🤦♀️😅 . But pleased I gave it a go. 👍. I love the kale and kalettes and quite fancy trying the minestra next.
Your mum with the strimmer was my favourite part of the video! Just majestic
Hahhahaha!
I'm going to sow some pumpkins next week so i'll have to check details on your charity campaign before i record it! I'll grab you on IG. x
Hiya Jess, great job you and Muma did I do like the arches running along the middle. Oh those neighbours agree with you have the same issues in my backyard in suburban Ontario Canada. Congrats on 4 years wow think I’ve been with you for 3.75 of them lol all the best Luv for many more years to follow. 🇨🇦🐝🥂
I was getting strong Charlie Dimmock vibes in the first part of your video 😂 I used to watch Ground Force way back when and yell at the screen "just tie your hair back already!" when she pushed it out of her face for the thousandth time. Glad to say I didn't have to yell at the screen today as you're clearly more sensible than CD.
Hahhahaha!
You could perhaps dump all that rotting wood in the bottom of a garden bed, say in the polytunnel? Make a kind of a hugelbed? That would save on compost as well.
Golden Spectur is a yellow pom-pom dahila smiliar to the pink one you brought
Brilliant vlog yet again Jessie. Regarding the dahlias…Try cornel Bronze dahlia. Absolutely stunning.
Thanks lynnie! That is absolutely gorgeous!
Coucou
Superbe partage 😊
A bientôt
Yay!! Another allotment lunch and a delicious looking risotto, yum :) Cheers to cracking on - looking forward to seeing that Dahlia bed flourishing 🏵
Thanks Alison. Cheers to cracking on indeed!
I like the cactus type of dhalias
Ball and Pom Pom varieties between 36-48 inches are best for cutting ( pinch and cut deep for longer stems, dip in boiling water after cutting for longer vase life). My best are anything in Cornel (bronze) and Jowie (Winnie) series, burlesca, brown sugar, intrigue, tempest, Caitlin joy, wine-eyed Jill, Genova, wizard of oz, Beatrice, ivanetti, some decoratives work well too like rock run Ashley, black satin, diva, ferncliff copper. I am partial to tall anemone types like polka, mambo, platinum blonde. Dinner plates are lovely in the garden but not useful for bouquets.
Congratulations to you & mum on 4th anniversary. I wish I could be busy up here but we don’t have the weather, it’s wet, cold & windy. I’m about 2week behind which is not good. Loving the plot to plate segments. Your plot is looking great.
4. Years woo woo, great video again I love watching your content always fun but loads of hard work by you both. On the Dahlia front, one of my favourites is Fuzzy, just beautiful and a great cut flower ...
No idea how we go to 4 years, seems crazy!! What a great looking dahlia, i love the jagedy tips to the pettles!
that was most enjoyable looking forward to next week
:D thank you Steven.
Oh jessie I absolutely adore dahlias ,I have 10 in the garden at home and another 60 in the greenhouse that I'm growing from seeds saved from the ones in the garden so they will all be a good mix as they are never the same as the mother plant ,I'm more than happy to send you some seeds I have saved ( not dwarf ) they are ridiculously easy to grow from seed
Wow!! That's a lot of Dahlia action Sarah! I've only ever tried growing Bishops Children from seed. Do they take a few years to flower?
@JessieatPlot37 they do flower the 1st year and get to a pretty decent size ,I have never had any issues from growing from seeds, and last years blooms looked amazing
Dahlia 'Sensation' is fabulous for cutting. Purple/white waterlily, good strong stems about 80cms and upwards facing head so you don't have to stick it on a high shelf so you can see it's face! 😊
Another great informative and entertaining vlog from the 'A team'.
That looks gorgeous Wendy! And what a bonus that it stands up properly :D
@@JessieatPlot37 you may want to check out 'Creme de Casis' - same shape and habit but burgundy/pink/cream tones. No good for pollinators though! They need open faces...🐝
Try connecting the arches with long poles running along the top of the arch. Much more stable maybe?
Yes, thats what the ones that are already in place have. I will be fixing the supports for these this week.
Happy anniversary 🎉. Love seeing mom getting around so well! 😊 kitties are precious! ❤ cooking ideas YEAH! 👍 April is gardening excitement and a lot of work, but I’m taking a week in May right after frost potential could come to get everything planted out.
Thanks Samantha! How very organised of you to book a plant week off :D
im hooked jess i had bean tops today for first time ever , and im stealing that risotto reipe for tomorros as im going to harvest alot more yuuuum
:D fantastic :D I love them! were yours from field beans or the proper board beans?
In a world of overly curated content creators, dare to be a Jessie! I'm not biased because of the name or anything 😅😂 But seriously, you are one of the few gardening channels that I still subscribe to because you are transparent and keep it real. Love your channel and never miss a video! Kudos from across the pond in Ohio USA. 💜✨️
Agreed. And a well developed sense of humour. Always appreciated.
Agree, Jessie is a delight to watch & I'm learning alot ❤
100% was just saying that very thing to my husband! Such a natural, friendly, intelligent and funny lady 💚 can’t believe it’s been four years 🙈🙈 my goodness time does whiz by
Wow! what a lovely thing to read on a cold, wet wednesday afternoon! And a fellow Jess! :D Thank you so much, that's really made me smile.
@JessieatPlot37 You are most welcome! Cheers! 😊
I have missed purple sprouting this year, I forgot to sow 😥 however, I have done two successions of the early kind and both just shrivelled up. Not giving up though !!!!
I have asparagus envy Jessie. Every time it dies on me and its so expensive to buy the roots.
Oh thats so pants when you completely forget to sow something isn't it!! I did that with a couple of things last year and i was so annoyed! Shame about the asparagus not taking, for you.
So enjoy your video Jessie. First year growing Dahlias last year and my absolute favourite was Pooh brilliant as a cut flower. ❤️
Thank you Maureen! Oh how sweet is Pooh! Love its red within orange little combo!
Well done both of you moving everything around your doing a great job, loved the risotto too 😊
Thanks Tracy! I love moving stuff around, feels great :D
@@JessieatPlot37 I wish I had your diy skills Jessie , your very inspiring how you just get stuck in doing things ☺️
Dahlia suggestion Great Silence.
That looks gorgeous! Love that pinky/orange blend.
Not gonna lie I’d have added bacon and mushrooms to the risotto lmao. great video x
Hahhahahaha, its a very valid choice :D
Hi Jessie, you had my attention on the minestra sprouts when you mentioned its size. I grow things in my not very big back garden and the size of the sprouting broccoli was always a problem, considering that harvest is not massive from 2 plants… What is the proper name of the sprouts please and where to get them, (google didn’t show much)? Also if you could recommend something similar and compact at all? Cavolonero for sprouts is already sown 😊❤😘
Love it all speaking of the arches where can we purchase these please 😊😊😊
H Jessie what was the name of the sprouting broccoli began with an M? I grow an early one and it’s very sparse. Thanks x
Just wondering does Dad ever get to share all those wonderful recipes 🤔❣❣❣
Dinners yes! But he really hates risotto (in this case) and doesn't eat lunch! I mostly film lunch cooking because of the lighting so it looks like he's missing out but he's not!
Hey Jessie, love your videos 😊 out if intrest what is the mic you use? X
Hi Aimee, thank you! Its actually this one: amzn.to/4akvfxL so not expensive but i've found it to be really great!
How satisfying when you get that much done & what a difference!!! Looks great now.
What was the brassica called that you put with the noodles. I definitely want to grow that this year. Looked much prettier than the normal type. Didn’t know radicchio grows more heads following year. Thank you 🙏🏻
Yes I would like to know too! I thought she said Monestra but I can’t seem to find it.
Its called Minestra Nera. Or (i believe) sometimes Spigariello. And the specific one i have is a variety called Liscia! I am going to see if i can find a link to the exact one for next week.
@@JessieatPlot37thanks Jessie. Yes a link would be great. I can’t find a uk seller online so that would be really helpful. Thank you 🙏🏻 can’t wait for the next video now 💚
Dahlia 'American Sunset'
How is your favourite sprouting brassica called?
oh wow, thats some serious orange! beautiful!
The broccolis full name is Cavolo da Foglia, Minestra Nera, Liscia
I should have used those angled brackets on my recently made decking beds. I just used short pieces of 2 by 2 (like many people do) but I'm guessing those may be the first things to rot. Probably doesn't matter as I can use some flat brackets/corner brackets if that happens. I think it's cleaner doing it with the brackets though e.g. when making mesh covered boxes like you use for carrots. Wooden corner bits get in the way. I'm guessing that's one of the reasons you prefer the metal plates.
Why did you think the corner L brackets would be potentially less secure than the angled plates you put on the bottom of the decking? Are the former thinner metal? Or is there a wood strength point or pressure point difference between putting brackets on top vs sides.
How many years do you think you'll get on your decking raised beds by the way?
Yeah, i always find the wood in the corners gets in the way of something! If you want to put a netting frame over or something!
Regarding the corner brackets, its only that i've had a couple of them pullout before, as the bed has aged and never found that with the top plates!
How long they will last is a tricky question. Depends so much on the quality of the boards. I've got all of mine from the same shop, same product but ones i've had 6 years are absolutely perfect and 2 that i made 3 years ago are starting to rot at the base. Seems to be a bit of pot luck!
@@JessieatPlot37 Thanks. I guess decking lifespan also depends how well the area drains - I would guess each area in a plot is different due to soil type and elevation.
I'd be really happy if mine last 6 years. 3 years I'd be a bit disappointed I think. I've coated the cut ends with linseed oil hoping it will give an extra season or two but not really sure how effective linseed oil is. But definitely didn't want to use any strong chemicals.
Hey Jessie - what a transformation, and in all that wind! Did you ever find a reliable source for the minestra seeds? I've just been hunting online, and can't find them anywhere except Ebay... Thanks for another great and inspirational video 😀
I am on the case Janet! The more of mine i eat the more crazy about it i am so i'm going to make sure i can provide a good source of seed. Hopefully i'll have checked the variety out for next week!
@@JessieatPlot37 Brilliant! Thanks, Jessie
We are underwater again. I'm so glad that you are managing to get cracking. This weekend may be a desparation sowing and planting session. Then again, last frost is May so perhaps I won't get too carried away. Love the video. Noodles with plot additions are a goto lunch here too. Looking forward to next week.
Oh bugger about the water situation. that must be so frustrating!!
See you had a lazy day at the plot 😉😂
definitely :D
Hello My Jessie Babe, Love You.
Loved the cooking segment. I've been watching you since covid. Love your channel.
Thanks Karen :)
Hi , first time watching one of your videos, it was soooo lovely!
Its sooo nice seeing you and your mum spending time together on your plot, sadly my mum passed away 2 weeks ago, but I did manage to tell her I had just been offered my first alottment, she was thrilled for me. It would have been lovely to have time with her at my allotment, but that cant happen, however I will be watching all your videos , and it was lovely of you to show us cooking with your greens. I thoroughly enjoyed your video!
Thank you so much for showing me the way you put together your beds. I struggle so much trying to hold the boards while drilling holes and putting in screws all by myself. You just made my day!!! Wow😂❤🎉
:D Fantastic Debbie. glad to be of service! :D
I know who I would vote to win the greenhouse war of 2024 😏
I love the fact that you shared the risotto recipe❤
As soon as i have a functioning kitchen again i hope to share much more!
More cooking with your produce would be appreciated, love your vlog.
I'll be include more like i used to when i have a functioning kitchen back!
I just love virtual shopping in the UK. I'm in Spain, and while it's cheaper, the selection is pathetic. So I dream -shop with you 🙂
hahahah!
Can you tell me the name of that sprouting plant you ate for lunch....did you say Monestra?? I'm having trouble finding it on Google. Looks delicious 😋 thanks!
Such a lovely vlog, looks fantastic! ❤
Cheers, sending love to you both!
Its called Minestra Nera! Absolutely gorgeous thing it is too.
Looks so delicious! Yummm. I am going to try growing great gigante beans in the US zone 7. Any advice you can share would be greatly appreciated.
They are very easy Stacey! Grow them exactly like you would a runner bean! Except dont pick them until they go paper dry at the end of the season :)
Wow you & mum have worked so hard. I thought March was busy, but I've found April just as busy too. If not more. We'll done ladies I loved watching.
Hello Jessie, can believe how much stuff you were able to fit into your Honda Jazz !.....but you can do it when you B&Q it. Swift potatoes grow really quickly, and you should be able to harvest 'earlies' in around 60 days from emergence of the leaves. But you can beat Homeguard for flavour.
Hahhaha, she's a little workhorse that car :) Thanks for the tip about swift, i guess the clue is in the name :D They will be the first ones i dig out then! We grew homeguard last year and i agree, it was a really lovely potato
Wow 4 years. I love how you will have all these videos of you and your mom working in the beautiful garden together. I lost my mom 33 years ago when she was young so I appreciate this aspect of your videos. Since I'm new, I haven't looked for your asparagus how-to videos or any fruit you may have growing. I have a huge chipmunk and squirrel problem, but I love what I'm seeing with your cages. I've tried connect-it plastic cages, but do not know how to assemble wood yet. You give me great ideas. I'm allergic to the sun and heat as well as typical things so my window of working is short. But I love gardening so much, so THANK YOU for the ideas, advice and beautiful videos to watch when I'm stuck in bed sick with asthma. Say hi to your mom. Take care!
Your garden is looking great. Thanks for the food demos, the food looked great. Love going into stores to see what they carry to buy. Great vlog !
Thanks Anna!
Hey Jessie! Me and my Mum love watching your videos together. Unfortunately, my Mum's blindness stops her from enjoying your videos to the fullest when I'm not here. Your filming and editing are artistically brilliant and beautiful, but without a voice-over, my Mum has no clue what's happening. She pointed out to me that without my audio description of the risotto, she'd have missed out on that lovely section of film. Like I said though, we love watching your videos and hope you and your Mum are keeping well x
New subscriber and first time watching. I enjoy watching allotment videos. I live in Texas and we have very wet springs and hot, Hot summers. You and your Mom work great together!
You know....those fast forwards of you driving to the store, round weird corners and whipping thru the parking lot and then you're getting out of the car.For us watching, those are a bit disquieting.
This feeling is reinforced a bit by the expression on your mom's face as she came around the car.
Dahlias id recommend: waltzing Matilda, happy single kiss, soulman, bishop of York, totally tangerine. All did really well in my plot - agreed the cafe au lait did less well. Xxx
Wow the arch walkway will be a thing of beauty when covered with beans etc. I have always aspired to have my arches like that but I didn't plan the veg beds well enough and was a bit restricted at the time by Hubby's need to see more lawn and not my veg beds grr.
Anyhoo, that dahlia bed is going to look splendid. Did I see some of the BIshops series in your collection? They are great for pollinators, make lovely cut flowers and you have lots of flower colours to choose from as well as they have lovely dark stems and foliage too. I picked one up recently called Bishop of Dover to try a new one on me is a palest lilac with some darkening edging. Hope it looks like that in real life, if the slugs don't get it first !
What an excellent video! Loved every minute of it.
My cat especially liked the time lapse sequences with Lily in them. She kept leaping off my lap and racing up to bat the TV. She is nonchalant about the gorgeous Girlies for some reason.
Hhahaha, wierd what they go for isn't it! Halley goes crazy for videos of fish. anything else moving in a similar way... mice or balls or anything, not interested!
My most prolific Dahlia must have is Crazy legs it's a orange yellow two tone great cutting flower only down side need to stake as she does get a lil tall.
The £10 arches are a bargain matching obalisk are fabulous too.
Harvest to kitchen is a great way of showing ideas what to do with the glorious produce u grow.
Moving stuff in garden always feels like a vamp and new same stuff but new outlook always fun
🐝Thanks for the great video🌻 What no kitten spam? shame shame 🤣
Hahhaha, kitten spam will be happening next week. In fact i'm trying to type this while defending my keyboard!! Not very successfully hahaha
@@JessieatPlot37 Sounds like the kitten is digital and needs a catapp 🤣
You know what… you would be great having your own tv program !
Leave well enough alone, we'd lose her if she went into TV, she totally would be amazing 🤩
Congratulations on 4 yrs! I've not missed a vlog yet 😊 love them all ❤ 🎉 cheers !
Wow, Tamara! Thank you so much for the 4 years!
Thx and thank you !
Oooh…asparagus…I must go look to see if ours is up…may be covered by weeds😱Jinxy
[Fashion police] like your mum's jeans Jess very trendy.
Fantastisch Good work Jessie you the best te moostiun Top Time Compost Top nieuwe bed thans te video Top week ❤🥦🌱🌷✔️🍹⛅🤩🧤🏵️🎧
Thanks Lucrom!
I do love a good shopping trip to B&Q for the allotment 😊
:D i was very proud to only come out with what i went in for :D
Yes, a whirlwind of activity this week. I love it!
:D thanks Jaynee
plastic cutting boards are extremely bad for you, add a lot of microplastics
Bora Bora and Touch of Black are two taller Dahlia with cut flower power 💐
It’s nice to see you and your mom 🥰.
:) thanks
I love they you can make lunch in your potting shed.
For dahlias, I love Cornel Bronze
Just looked it up, thats a gorgeous one!
@@JessieatPlot37 It's prolific here in Brooklyn. Must have grown to about 5' tall, tons of blooms.
Is the veg broccollini?
Its a cavolo sprouting called minestra nera. Also sometimes called spigarelio i believe! the specific variety is Liscia. I'm looking for a reliable link to the right one for next week.
Will the Dahlias survive the slugs and snails on that edge?
My favorite garden account!! Thank you 🎉❤
:D thank you!
I’m obsessed with my dahlias - have one dedicated bed at the allotment with nearly 40 (!) in there. My favourites are Linda’s Baby, Jowey Winnie, La Recoleta and Addison June. All are fantastic ball varieties that last so well in a vase.
Another top tip - I planted my dahlia bed in a rainbow colour order, it looks phenomenal at full bloom 🤩
40?!?! Blimey!! I've stuck all those on my list to look up. thank you. And what a beautiful idea to colour grade them :D
Love the music on your video… can you tell me what it is?
Evenings viewing sorted😊
Same xxx
:D thanks Carl (and Lynn!)
Bacardi..3'....American Dawn 4'.....Jowey Merel 3-31/2'(not mirella)....Jowey Winnie is lovely but can get tall if likes its position....Molly Raven (Sarah Raven plants) 3'.....Fubuki (different colours) 3-4'.....French Can Can 3'....Cassis 3'....Cognac 3'....Rockstar 3'......Waltzing Matilda 3'.....all these are really lovely and range between 3 - 4'. The colours blend well with everything. Two nice white small flower ones are Twinings ? Can't remember...and Platinum Blonde.....All make great cutting flowers.
Oh fantastic, thank you! Couple of them on my wish list already and i'll go and look up the others now. Much appreciated!
Where did you get your minestra nera seeds from? I've googled them and only websites seems to be a dodgy looking ebay account and some USA based websites.
Are they a hybrid by the way? Or can you save seeds?
Edit - someone in one of your previous videos suggested they thought the minestra nero was 'Spigarello' kale. Do you think that's correct? A lot of the Spigarello pictures in google don't show the really curly leaves but the Sarah Raven looks close.
43:05 Beautiful bouquet near the end there.
The full name on my packet is Cavolo da Foglia, Minestra nera, Liscia. I have seen similar called spigarelio but i'm not sure its the same. I am looking for a source of the exact one i have and i'll share it when i know its the right one!
Im biased, so my favourites are the weston ones Weston Miss (lemon yellow) Weston Pirate (Dk Red) Weston spanish dancer (Yellow and red) Rycroft Jill (Bronze) they'll all give you 2 vases a week no problem down side is you'll struggle to get them this time of year but next year from Halls of Hedon & Jack Gott.
I will look tham up, thanks Nick. Yeah, i know i'm out of season but this is a long term plan so i'll probably be putting in my order in autumn!
Wow that was a lot of work, im arch obsessed i have 3 at the moment two for veg ones got clematis (its doing so well this year 😮) I'm new to dahlias (thank you) so havent had flowers yet but looking forward to Arabian nights, dark spirit, colour spectacle, akita, fab vlog Jessie 🥰
They are so good the arches aren't they, save so much space! Oh Akita was one i had in my first lot! sadley it got got by the frost but it was so beautiful!
Plunk the new one on.... that is one of the pros of having to replace wooden borders. The edges get refreshed every so many years.
:d its great when they do and everything looks sharp :D
We picked the first asparagus as well yesterday and just enjoyed it 😋🤗
Bliss!
Planted my home guard , swift and some of my 2nds kestrel and a Maris in pots. Need to do the rest of the 2nd and main crop in a bed as it gets so expensive buying in compost. My plot is just up the road from that B&Q. There is a place next to us with plenty of free horse manure, you should go and collect some. Enjoyed the recipes too
it really is a crazy expensive if you try to do it all in pots isn't it!
Great Jessie, thanks! Rather envious of your ability to walk on your paths and beds. Our plots are not well draining and positively swamp like at present 😂, even the raised beds, can't crack on much at all. Hopefully the wind will dry things out a bit, 😊
Oh pants, that must be frustrating! Not many advantages to growing on sand but the drainage is one!! Hope it drys out a bit for you soon!
I'm with you on the arches, I have pretty similar down the centre of the plot, but grow my squash, melons and cucumbers up them.
Alone, useless, but one toy add in skme support, super study
exactly! and as long as you know they are weak, you can really make great use of them!
Dahlia Wine eyed Jill and Bacardi are so beautiful.. 💖
Wine eyed Jill is definitely on my list and just looked up Bacardi and that also looks gorgeous. love the shorter pettles edging the centre! And all booze themed, even better :D
Jessie, There is 25% off summer flowering bulbs / dahlias etc at the old Adrian hall Garden centre at the moment with masses to choose from. Happy growing. x
Oh fab Angela! Thank you! i've got to head out that way to pick up more pellets for the girlies, i'll pop in!!
Jesse try ordering some dahlias from halls of heddon, they supply tubers and cuttings and have a huge variety!!! Cuttings also flower better than the tubers.
I have them on my list! I will go and have a trawl through their stocks!
Oh if only my arches would push in like yours….too much rock formation. I love the new look it should look amazing once the plants grow up and over.
oh thats frustrating! only takes one small stone to be in the way let alone rock formation!
Lovely to watch you rather than empty my greenhouse once more & bring all the Tom's,pumpkins, cuts & courgettes back into the house to avoid the frost tonight & high temp, tomorrow ! 🤪🤩
Hhahahah, glad to provide a distraction! :D
Last year, I had 6 Dahlias , this year I'm going to have about 30! 😅 Some grown from seed too 😊
Hahhahahaha! That is some serious expansion!
Love your relocating and repurposing activities. I get such great ideas from you. Your garden will be glorious again this year.
Thank you Rebecca :D
What is the ministration that you mentioned as being better than purple sprouting broccoli?
Its a variety of cavolo sprouting broccoli called minesta nera liscia. i'm looking for a good link to the right one to include next week.
Jessie , I watch your vlogs from Ayrshire in Scotland and just want to tell you how much I enjoy watching your videos of your allotment diaries but the thing that draws me the most is the lovely sweet peaceful piano music that you play it fair chills me out that it must be good for the old blood pressure. Your videos should be on NHS prescriptions lol . Take care happy gardening
Hahhaha, thank you William! :D
@williamlong7188 I am south of the border from you in Upper Nithsdale, Dumfries and Galloway. I totally agree with everything you said.
Hey Jess have you ever sent in a video to gardeners world for the viewers garden segments? Would love to see you on there! 🌿
Oohh! Thanks for the recipe video😊
:D
Thanks for the video!
:D thanks Teresa
So much varying content....brilliant watch😊
