I should note that I haven't listened all the way through yet, and I have not read either of Fukuyama's or Huntington's work, but I think there's a crucial element which is not being discussed here, namely that of Western intervention in the likes of Syria, Palestine, Egypt, Libya, Iraq, and so on. In fact there's a very prominent sense of American or Western exceptionalism in this interview. The truth is that the problems in the Middle East aren't primarily religious (maybe more so in recent years with Iran/Saudi Arabia). The West has supported oppressive, authoritarian, corrupt and dictatorial regimes, which has prevented any kind of true homegrown pan-Arab secular liberal democracy from forming. It is true that it would be overly simplistic to say all the issues are a result of Western intervention, so I'm not going to do that, but to not mention it at all is equally disingenuous intellectually. But, like I said, I have not read Fukuyama's work in detail, so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt since he may have written more extensively about that particular angle in his books. Totally agree on the idea that, long term, there is hope that Islam may yet embrace liberal ideals, but it won't happen as long as there is war funded and supported by the West going on which will turn the population of those countries into the arms of extremists.

Read the comments, they are not stereotyping. Islam is inherently political and muslims know this. Many of the comments in this very video are calling for muslim world domination.

    Praise be to Allaah.
    Firstly:
Democracy is a man-made system, meaning rule by the people for the people. Thus it is contrary to Islam, because rule is for Allaah, the Most High, the Almighty, and it is not permissible to give legislative rights to any human being, no matter who he is.
    It says in Mawsoo’at al-Adyaan wa’l-Madhaahib al-Mu’aasirah (2/1066, 1067):
Undoubtedly the democratic system is one of the modern forms of shirk, in terms of obedience and following, or legislation, as it denies the sovereignty of the Creator and His absolute right to issue laws, and ascribes that right to human beings. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):
“You do not worship besides Him but only names which you have named (forged) - you and your fathers - for which Allaah has sent down no authority. The command (or the judgement) is for none but Allaah. He has commanded that you worship none but Him (i.e. His Monotheism); that is the (true) straight religion, but most men know not”
    [Yoosuf 12:40]
“The decision is only for Allaah”
    [al-An’aam 6:57]
    End quote.

Who’s to say that rule by individuals supposedly dedicated to carrying out religious will, will be any more pious than democratic rule by a pious populace? The most theocratic system is democracy.

@@douglasmacarthur702 The Islamic system combines all goodness, so it is the system that should be adopted. Allah, The Exalted, says (what means): {And judge (O Muhammad) between them by what Allah has revealed and do not follow their inclinations and beware of them, lest they tempt you away from some of what Allah has revealed to you. And if they turn away - then know that Allah only intends to afflict them with some of their (own) sins. And indeed, many among the people are defiantly disobedient. Then is it the judgment of (the time of) ignorance they desire? But who is better than Allah in judgment for a people who are certain (in faith).} [Quran 5:49-50]
In his book about the Islamic criminal law in comparison to man-made laws, Shaykh ‘Abd Al-Qaadir ‘Awdah wrote:
“The democratic system is essentially founded on the concepts of mutual consultation and cooperation between the ruler and the ruled; however, misapplication led to the state where the ruled are given control over the ruler and the lack of mutual cooperation between them. Dictatorship, on the other hand, is essentially founded on absolute obedience to the ruler and trust in him; however, misapplication led to the state where the ruler is given absolute control over the ruled and the lack of trust between them. As for the Islamic system, it is founded on mutual consultation and cooperation between the ruler and the ruled in the stage of seeking council in decision making, and on obedience and trust (in the ruler) in the stage of executing decisions, and the rules of the Islamic system do not allow one of the two sides to control the other. Hence, it combines the merits attributed to democracy and to dictatorship while it is void of the demerits of them both...” [At-Tashree‘ Al-Jinaa'i Al-Islaami Muqaaranatan bil-Qanoon Al-Wadh‘i]

As an ExMuslim I have to disagree with Fukuyama about what he is saying that Islam is like any complex religion has different types of interpretations, I think either his political correctness is preventing him to be honest or either he doesn't know much about Islam, he is saying that 50 years ago the Arab countries were secular !!! And this is also so far from the truth because most of the Arab leaders and presidents come from military background and they used Islam to control the ignorant majority of population and built so many religious schools and over time the society got to know Islam more and more and become more radicalized. Fukuyama is saying that we didn't see any suicide bomber 50 years ago and this is true but it's because 50 years ago there wasn't much weapons available as now and also there was no internet that can connect any young man who want to apply Islam and do Jihad and follow the false prophet Mohammed and his followers and fight the infidels in the sake of Allah to go to heaven. Islam as its now is radical , the Quran has more than 25 clear violent verses that order the Muslim to fight the infidels, the Christians and the Jews to spread Islam. Unfortunately This radical Islam is widespreaded in most of the Arab countries starting from Saudi Arabia and Egypt where they teach these radical Islam in their religious schools like Alazhar University in Egypt , and this include almost all the Middle East countries. So these countries teach this radical Islam with the jihad ideology included do in it but when a young man take it into action and do jihad they call him terrorist!!! Schizophrenia!!!
So Mr Fukuyama, It's time to admit we are not in a war against Terrorism but a war against Islam. We must stop using political correctness and address the problem that the Islam and The Terrorism are two sides of the same coin. If we didn't start fighting Islam as an Ideology, terrorism will never stop. I must be clear here, we are in a war with Islam as an Ideology and not in a war against Muslims. Actually Muslims are the first victims of Islam and by fighting Islam, we are doing the Muslims a big favor getting rid off their terroristic religion.

Allah is the Greatest, as if they themselves know it is stupid but they get high in forcing you to stand what they can push down your throat , so got my kid and my God of Love Life and Wisdom and got out as most of my family did. If someone read the books of islam literally you get ISIS.
So the "radical muslims" dont need to work hard to "twist" their religion.
Literal islam has the commands to impose sharia, create a caliphate, conquest the world with jihad, subjugate infidels as dhimmis, take slaves and eliminate any other ideology and goverment that is "unislamic".

So what's you're saying is, the 1 billion+ ppl on this Earth who call themselves muslims, who don't subjugate infidels, don't take slaves, don't participate in violent jihadist extremism, and who just live ordinary and decent lives don't actually follow their faith correctly? LOL. I think even you can see how nonsensical that sounds. Who died and made you the arbiter of what is and what isn't a proper Muslim? BTW, just as a side note, complex religions like Islam aren't reducible to literal interpretations of translated scriptures. That lends credence to the silly idea that you're peddling that Islam is a monolith, which - as history continuously reminds us - is quite obviously not true, in fact on the contrary.
